What’s causing my tapes to snap? Could it be the old pinch rollers on my deck?

Hi Jackbox (Covkid), thanks for that, very informative.
I agree, Stephen's belt change guide for the cd & cassette helped me too.
You need the patience of a saint but once you have taken it apart put it all back together a dozen times it becomes easier!
I find that what really helps when doing these jobs is to make notes & sellotape the screws to the notes as you go.
I still have issues with the cassette players, a few questions if I may.
Can you tell me please what prompted you to replace the pinch rollers & can you tell me what to tap into ebay to find the pinch rollers (or perhaps supply the link) as I haven't been able to locate them just yet.
I've had the MHC NX1 / HTC NX1 system for 20-25 years now. It's great when it's working so I am trying to service it myself to keep it going for a bit longer.
I've also got problems with the pixels on the lcd screen breaking up, which isn't crucial but would be nice to fix.
What a shame that SONY don't support this model any more.
    Cheers. Richard.

Search the bay for: 1mmx10mmx6mm tape recorder pinch roller - and I changed them as it made sense to do so before they deteriorated like the belts. I think its just possible to swap them out in situ if you have a hook and patience but much easier when stripped down. I'm fairly sure these rollers fit many, many decks, not just Sony ones.

As for missing pixels on the display, join the club. These units were built to a price and you can't get replacements to my knowledge, but they can be repaired with a T-tip on a soldering iron if you're not squeamish: ruclips.net/video/-QZk9WCz-D8/видео.html - I just couldn't be bothered :)

And fair play to you for doing the belts. Right to repair etc. These were good cassette decks - well built and excellent bass from the amp. Now the only cassette mechs available are cheap flimsy rubbish, with wow and flutter not even a consideration so what you've done is spot on. Like the VCR, there is always going to be a need for older units, if only to transfer unique audio/video recordings. I use mine as a PC amp. The other things that can plague old cassette decks and hi-fi units is the capacitors. Sony tended to use good ones but I have all kinds of equipment here that i'm re-capping to get items running properly again. I daresay the likes of Amstrad, Binatone etc used the cheapest components they could find to get the price down and capacitors are always the weak point in old electronics. Again though, not too hard to replace and there are even 'capacitor kits' available on the bay for more expensive equipment which only use the better Nichicon caps. I'm getting into fixing valve sets - just like seeing them run again. Keep going fella we're doing a vital job as well as reducing landfill :).

Finally, the great thing is you can pick these units up for less than £30 and get them going again. Every ad says "missing pixels, belts need replacing" etc. Once sorted they are a fairly unmatched system in terms of power/sound. It shouldn't be TOO difficult to convert them to accept a USB input and bluetooth either - my next job. Checkout THIS video if you need reassurance that keeping your tape decks going is really worth it: ruclips.net/video/90-gIAMvQNs/видео.html

Hee.. my nx1 is not reacting to my remote!?
    Any idea to fix that?

Hold the remote and point it at your phone camera. Do you see the light when you press buttons? That would at least establish whether its remote or sensor at fault.
