THANK YOU SO MUCHHH. Apart from making me relief from the burden of my assignment and reading textbooks itself, this video also made me interested in the topic and got me curious! Again, thank you thank you thank you so much...
John Locke's social contract revels morality. The theory says that people live together in society in accordance with an agreement that establishes moral and political rules of behaviour.
Absolutely not. In fact, Thomas Hobbes was the first to analyse political systems using the individual and not the community as the main subject of political construction, that is why he is one of the fathers of liberalism. Communism, on the other hand, can be related with another contractualist: Rousseau. His idea of "general will" was certainly an inspiration for Marx. But comparing communism with Hobbes is nonsense.
@@pimpampum9968 i completely agree with you, Rousseau believed that people should rule themselves, he believed that the legislature (the person that represents the people) should always place their general interest before their individual interest and that's true communism on the other hand Hobbes believed that people can't live together because they're selfish by nature, the only way to coexistence is by sacrificing something and that is their freedom.

Hi Philosophy Vibe! I stumbled across your channel as I was searching for simple explanations. You guys nailed it! Now, I don't have to read such a long reading material.
This was so incredibly helpful. I was having such a hard time finding sources that could actually break down and explain in layman's terms what both of these theories were and you guys did it so well. I needed to write a paper on this for my online humanities class and all the sources she gave us in the "online textbook" were so hard to understand and didn't explain anything. thank you so much for going so in depth! I've subscribed and will definitely come back and use you guys in the future!!!
I disagree with these philosophers reviews on how social contract theory. Most of the liberal society as far as social contracts are concerned are based around the UN, and The fact that liberal values on morality are superior to conservative values on morality and that we’re bound by birth to those liberal and progressive values rather we like it or not. UN position is that these of liberal progressive morals including international democracy or a form of human rights which is why we agree to them by existing. Saying that you disagree with International human rights law is by it’s definition a hypocritical and contradictory statement as you agreed to international human rights law by existing. The thing is a posing liberal progressive society is where the problem, because even conservatives agreed to the society by existing.
Im about to defend my Thesis with regards to Hobbes' Social Contract Theory, one major questions i might encounter is why i chose Hobbes' over Locke. I am fortunate to find this video.
"What is government and how it came to be?" It's known as the constitution. It is what is known as duties and limitations of the "government." Since FDR we've had neither. UNITED STATES has been a corporation since in chapter 11 bankruptcy.
Locke's theories don't really seem to be much of a contract at all, considering that the contract can be broken whenever the government is unjust (which is good, I just don't think his theory strongly fits in with the idea of a "social contract").
First Hobbs contradicts his philosophy as he states individuals are selfish and corrupt. So in that very breath he states give these “individuals” full power and authority? Interesting.
the rulers who have been destructive to societies are not stupid at all. they well understand the state of nature that exists under the veneer of civilization in good times and that can be used to bring them to power and to secure their power when things aren’t going well. and it doesn’t take much to rally the masses into true believers.
Excellent reasoning,,proving freedom of speech, thought is more than beneficial,,, but out right necessary ,for best achievements and full SELF REALIZATION of individuals AND COMMUNITY....Ect Ect Ect Ect Ect Ect ..Great VIDEO ..
I have been watching your videos for years. I think both of you are the same person. The left is the side of your free spirit soul and the right is your calm soul. Am I correct?
Finally someone who actually calls out Hobbes on his delusional theory of social contract. Everyone that talks about this does it as if this man is a genius, when he's simply a fool and having seen the war made him a coward!
By the way i got the assignment from the university to watch the social contract between Hobbes&Locke and to be honest i really like this video it very well-put and understandable.
Hello Philosophy Vibe, thank you for this insight and making understanding of these concepts easier. However, it would be of much gratitude to receive your analytics on the racial contract theory on your channel as well.
that was really good..I have a reuest sir...kindly make another video and include Jean. J Rousseau,s social contract theory comparison with Hobbes and Locke...compare and contrast the theories of these three persons in a single scroll...i will be deeply grateful..
Glad you enjoyed the video. We have done a sole video on Rousseau's social contract so this might be worth a watch :) ruclips.net/video/hssYkF-s3ks/видео.html
According to Locke the state of nature was bounded by laws derived from rational thoughts since humans are rational beings... I may think that in the earlier state before human development there was no sense or too many cases of brutality and wrong doing. Then why the need for a social contract to have our properties secured if safety was assured in the state of nature?
i’m SOOOO late but part of locke’s state of nature is that every man has equal right to enforce the laws of nature on every other man, which includes punishment for violating those laws (ie infringing on life, liberty, and property). locke argued that a situation where each individual enforces their own justice leaves open the potential for “justice” to become biased and self interested and more about revenge than anything else. so while the state of nature is not a violent bloody war like hobbes’ is, it’s by no means safe. people’s life liberty and property rights are constantly threatened by others, and because of our bias/self interest we’re also not very good at enforcing justice on each other when those rights are violated. so it’s better and safer to authorize a government to enforce those protections for us
Thank you so much... I have an exam which included information pertaining the social contrat theory. And with this simple details, i am surely good to go. Thank you once again ❤
So why do we have parlaments? Is it not to limit the power the government? What about elections? They throw the current government for a new depending on what people believe they want.
Thank you for the video! I would contra-argue that just the fact property is not self-evident as natural law doesn't mean it is not. Gravity is also not self-evident but still a natural law. And about the last argument of 'go to live in a forest', I understood the argument, but the main point of this argument is about legitimate power to use the force against you and make you agree with such a contract. I love your videos! You people are awesome!
Life is the first property you have. Slavery is just a tax of the 100% over your work and the lack of own property, dependant on the control of a master who could perfectly be analogous the own State.
It's other way around, liberty, life and property is called natural right by liberal and they have to produce evidence to such claim not those who denies it.

This is like the ideal gas law for politics. Great for teaching elementary concepts, but not very accurate to use often in real life applications.
Agreed. So what happened in the US. Religion is everywhere. Even on the money.
is locke's social contract historical or moral? the same with hobbes? why?
