    I have had exactly the same sytem for 18 months and it has been great. An EV increases the savings because the cheap night rate for charging saves more per kwh for fuel than it does versus the normal grid tariff. I highly recommend exporting maximum and using the cheap night rate every night to fiil the battery, chsrge EV and dishwasher etc. This maximises your savings and also importantly maximises the benefit to help balance the national grid.

      As soon as my export is set up this will be the way I intend to run the system, but for the short period of time before then it just seems the most sensible to use up as much of what I’m generating as I can 👍🏻

    £9k seems good for that system. We paid that for our system (16 panels split east/west and a 6.5kWh battery) a few years ago.

    Apologies if you have answered these questions already:
    1) is the £9k system you have ordered a direct comparison with the Octopus system?
    2) who provides the warranty? Is it the installer, manufacturer or a third party? Are there risks?
    3) you’ve ordered 12 panels, would there have been a benefit to ordering more, or are you confined by space?
    4) do you have concerns about the appearance of your house with the panels? They can look ugly…
    5) you talked about return on investment, but there is the loss of original capital which wouldn’t occur if you had invested in, say, premium bonds, gilts, bonds, or even dividend paying stocks; any thoughts on this?
    6) could these panels pay for an EV? Any idea what the sort of electricity usage would be for your current car use?
    Interesting video!

    Very interesting Jacob. However, what you have not taken into account is opportunity cost of the growth you will miss out on of your £9k. Invested in a stocks and shares ISA for 7.5 years it could realistically grow to £13k (5% growth rate). So in actual fact it’s going to take more like 15 years at least to get back what it has cost you.

    I paid about £8000 for 16 panels on a south facing roof but that was 10 years ago. So my panels might not be as efficient as current ones. But then I also got a FIT scheme (now closed) that pays me for all I generate. The FIT scheme was replaced with a grant. I know nothing about the grant. Did you get a grant? Then I recently got a home battery so I don’t export at all now. I also got an Air Source Heat Pump about 7 years ago. This has an electric compressor so, when the sun shines, I get free heating. The heat pump was also on a scheme (RHI, also now closed). This ended after the 7 years but paid for itself.
    In the next few months I am getting a EV and home charger so I will be looking at the cheap nighttime tariffs to charge the home battery like you are planning. Such are the games we have to play these days.

    I've recently signed up to have solar installed too. Similar production to yours but a few more panels as one of my roofs is NW. I'm just waiting for DNO to come back then I can get booked in for install. I've worked out my savings to be about £1400 a year at current rates so payback in about 8 years. The trouble will be if export rates go down. Fingers crossed we'll get a couple of years at good rates at least.

      @JacobBurchell  28 дней назад +1

      Ah that’s brilliant! Iv just had my DNO come back and approved to export 5kw to the grid which im pleased with 😁
      Fingers crossed for a good couple of years worth of good rates to get us going and lots of sunshine along the way! ☀️☀️☀️

    Great Video 9K is a no brainer, I would allow for additional panels in future for exporting back to the grid, (you may see a payback a little faster) see if your installer will run some spare PV cables for future use? Good luck with your Channel. I live in Brazil and am still designing my system, I need a Split Phase Inverter 220 Volts for Air Con and 110 Volts for the house. I want a 30Kwh Battery and a 20Kw Inverter, I will also feed back to the Grid via a Net Meter.

    Thanks for sharing the info, i live on a terraced house with NE and SW facing roof, do you think it's a deal breaker in terms of ROI?

    • @JacobBurchell
      @JacobBurchell  Месяц назад +1

      Absolutely not, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, so you’d get solar generation on one side of the roof in the morning and one side in the afternoon/evening. I know someone with a very similar roof as yourself and his solar generation numbers are really good!
      Thanks for watching! 😁

      Can be done on your roofs. When having solar fitted, I highly recommend battery storage as well. From April to September, you will over produce what you can use from your solar, so storage is essential, otherwise you are exporting and being paid at a lower rate than you import. You can also get overnight cheap electricity tariff that you can charge the battery from the grid overnight. Ultimately, if ROI is your only motive for getting solar etc, allow 6 to 8 years, but you will be getting cheaper energy bills from day 1!

    • @dannydr1
      @dannydr1 27 дней назад

      @bluebearproductions8954 I have an EV so would be able to use the battery to charge as well i assume

    • @bluebearproductions8954
      @bluebearproductions8954 27 дней назад +1

      @@dannydr1 If you have EV and battery storage, need to be on a low overnight tariff, to charge bot at the same time. Highly recommend Octopus Energy, as very easy to use and have a plethora of tariffs, all switchable at any time without being tied in on contracts. Can be around 7.5p kWh between 23:30 and 05:30, so charge EV and house batteries on both at the same time. We have 3 X Tesla Powerwall 2's and 4 EV's and charge them all on the cheap overnight tariff when solar does not provide enough (winter months).

    £9k is an OK price, however, surprised that as your system is split over two roofs, that you are not having optimisers or micro inverters (better) fitted. As you system is split over more than one roof, shading will be different due to varying azimuth of the two roofs and as you only have a single string inverter, the system will only out put energy to the lowest performing panel. You will not get the maximum potential output from you panels and they will all be dragged down to the lowest output panel. You will not get the energy output and savings you are being quoted, due to Muti roof shading. I have a 40 panel system split over 4 roofs and micro inverters are essential for split roof systems to get maximum performance from your panels. reach out if you want some advice?

      @@JacobBurchell Great glad to hear it. Didn't want you to be disappointed with your project and have the opportunity for others to say what a load of rubbish solar is! You'll be very pleased with your investment and I don't know anyone who isn't these days. Be careful though, it's an obsession and 12 panels and 1 battery wont be enough, as I can testify with 40 panels and 3 X Powerwall 2's!! :-)

      You'd be surprised how quickly a system pays back if you have a battery. You can take advantage of TOU tariffs that will dramatically reduce your average cost per kWh. To give you an example, we currently pay around 16p per kWh by charging the battery during low price periods.

Obviously there are cheaper options but will they still be in business in 2yrs time. It's a long term investment and hopefully the company fitting will be there for you long term
