    Would you purchase the S1H for double the price tag of the S1? What features would make that decision for you?

    • @odysseyfilms6652

      Thanks for the great comparison, I have been shooting on the GH5 / GH5S and sometimes go with Canon C300 MK II + C200 , feels like the C200 is a great value. Except if I want to use the camera on a gimbal, I will need a full size gimbal instead of a Ronin S. I still strongly feel canon have great colour science. In India renting is very economical so I am planning to not buy any gear as of now.

    I own both the S1 and S1H too. I can also 100% confirm that the S1 DOES have dual native ISO just like the S1H. They both use the same sensor (very likely a close relative to the Sony IMX310 and IMX410) and therefor use the exact same EXMOR on-column A/D converters options that Sony sensors have on board. The dual native ISO is built directly into the sensor's A/D converters so the raw sensor data hand off already contains the two 0db functions. ("low" 0db and "high" 0db mode sampling) The major difference between the S1 and S1H is that the S1H gives you control over which mode you want between the low 0db and high 0db. The S1 automatically forces that change when you hit 4000 ISO. (which is perfectly fine) The only other sensor difference is the optical glass over the S1H sensor. It has an OLPF installed and the S1 does not. The S1H has truly a stunning image sensor that actually matches side by side to the Sony FX9...and in some cases beats it! The S1H and S1 have Sony's very best front end technology and combine that with Panasonics image processor and fantastic Panasonic CODECS and you have a camera that will complete in image quality with ANY camera on planet Earth and ANY price!

      Thank you for share your knowledge, I have S1 but I do not know how to take advantage of the dual native Iso when I am shooting in low light situation. When I am filming in V-log I sould shoot in 640 Iso (good light) or 4000 Iso (low light) to get the best results? Example If I use 5000 iso, It should be cleaner than 3200 iso because it's the next step in the second gain circuit over the 3200, last stop of the first circuit? What about dinamic Range? Or only for noise?
      Thank you very much for your attention!

    • @clifftotten7609
      @clifftotten7609 4 года назад +1

      @@ratadeldesierto760 - You are correct, 4,000 ISO is cleaner than 3,200 ISO. These cameras have TWO "0db" levels...a "low" 0db and a "high" 0db. The high 0db starts at 4000 ISO and that is why it's cleaner than the low 0db at 3200 ISO. The S1 has an automatic dual gain switch. You cannot control it like you can on the S1H. Once you go to 4000 ISO, the S1 automatically changes to the high 0db and you go up from there.

    • @Whiteinrevery
      @Whiteinrevery  4 года назад +1

      my only issue with the dual native ISO is it doesn't seem to work in non-log profiles like Cinelike-D or Natural Profile. Can you confirm that as well? I just see the noise level increasing and not resetting once you hit 4000 ISO.

    • @frankalvarez4959
      @frankalvarez4959 2 года назад

      So does the s1h and s1 have basically the same image quality? I get that the OLPF would change the sharpness of the image but other than that?

    • @SpencerWhiteman
      @SpencerWhiteman 2 года назад

      @@frankalvarez4959 Other than that, no. The great thing about the OLPF though is not combatting with Aliasing and Moire. That is a HUGE plus to the S1H over the S1. For the most part when I'm shooting in 4k on my S1 and S5, I don't have any issues. But when I'm shooting in 1080p and shooting highly detailed subjects, for instance walls with patterns, bride veils (I use 1080 60p for weddings since I can shoot Full Frame 10 bit 422), and other tight patterns, you can easily introduce aliasing and moire. That is a huge selling point for me on the S1H over the S1 and S5. But, is that hefty price tag worth it? I'm not sure lol.

    The 1.5 crop in 4K60P is the reason I can't buy it for my client work in Japan. We film everything in 4K60P for a 2160 x 2160 aspect ratio (180% crop in post). I'd be limited to the Sigma 18-35 or ultra wide-angle lens if I wanted things to fit in the frame.
    The GH5s with a metabones XL and Sigma 18-35 in 4K60P is just a 1.12x crop on top of a faster aperture at F1.2. Not to mention it balances perfectly on the tiny Weebil Lab S. Excited to see more updates from this channel once Pro-res raw is released next month though!

    I bought a S1 last year and was working (and still working) with an EVA1.
    I can't agree more with firmware differences, it's a shame coming from Pana ! If I can add something that is on S1H and not on S1 is the possibility to change Focal Lengh Setup for IBIS. This option is greyed and it sometimes ask me the focal lenght I used when I switch on the S1 but I can't decide by my own when I switch lenses.
    I would add that for VFR, I have the option @ 150FPS/25FPS. I don't know what % of slow mo it is but I guess it's better than 20%.

    Thanks for the comparisons. I think you mentioned waveforms a couple of times. Just to clarify (and I am sure you realized this), the S1 does have a Waveform monitor (at least with the VLOG upgrade... not sure if those S1's without the upgrade have Waveforms... kind of think they don't). Maybe you were thinking about the fact that on the S1H you can reposition AND resize the waveform monitor, while on the S1, you can only reposition the waveform monitor, but it stays the same size. Also, by the way, your wedding videos are very beautiful!!! Especially the ones shot up here in Marin :)

    • @Whiteinrevery
      @Whiteinrevery  4 года назад

      It isn't promoted by Panasonic although it does show that the Dual ISO levels are available in the S1. You just can't manually choose those options in the S1. Also, I noticed when filming in other profiles that are not V-Log that the Dual Native ISO doesn't seem to boast the same results. I just see the noise gradually get worse instead of resetting at 4K ISO like in V-Log. Also, I can't shoot high ISO levels without getting tons of noise if I'm shooting in say the Natural Profile. So in that regards, if you want the Dual Native ISO response, you need to film in V-Log.

    Quick question slightly off S1 topic - What's you current thoughts on best GH5 profile, specifically for weddings? I saw you have before recommended Natural, but then also V-Log. If only shooting 1080p I always love the 200MB vLog 422-10-bit 50fps, however I want to shoot in 50fps 4K, but that limits us to 8-bit. Do you get a better end result from 4k 8-bit Natural (with less dynamic range, but less grading needed) OR 4k 8bit vLog (more dynamic range, but more grading needed which is not good for 8 bit vLog). Sorry the long question, I would really appreciate your option, thank you!

    • @Whiteinrevery

      V-Log L and HLG have best dynamic range. But it's not as great as V-Log in the S1 and S1H. Id prefer 4k 60 with the Natural profile on the GH5.

  • @richardwills5703
    @richardwills5703 4 года назад

    Thanks for this comparison! Your work is pretty dope and been following a lot of your gear reviews in particularly around GH5 for some time now. You actually inspired me to purchase the GH5 to start films and it’s been great so far. I’m at a crossroads atm where I’ve invested into the M43 echo system but would love to simplify my workflow and gear. I love Philip Whites simplicity in just using the two primes and striping back everything else. My thought process is to sell my 6 lens, 2 GH5, Ronin and buy two S1 and couple of primes to start with. I guess my question for you is, How big a difference has the change from GH5 to S1 been for you? Is it chalk and cheese? How do you find the weight? 1.5 crop factor.... Love to get your opinion on this and equally would love a vid comparing GH5 to S1, as I’m sure there are many others like me sitting on the fence.

    • @raksh9
      @raksh9 2 года назад

      I can't speak for the GH5, but the S5 has overtaken my G9 for most situations. The S5 (and by extension S1) has 10 bit 422 4k 50p and unlimited 10bit 422 1080 50p. The colours in Cinelike V2, D2 and V-log are noticeably better than the G9, which is already excellent. And if you shoot in C4K and the right lens and lighting, the results literally look like cinema. Having said all of this, I'm likely to get a GH6 to complement my S5 because I have many native m43 lenses which are much smaller than their full frame counterparts. The weight of the S1 is just over a kilogram, heavier than a Canon 5D, so that's something to consider, too.
      Regarding Philip White's approach of two primes, he favours the Voigtlander 75mm f1.8 and 35mm f1.4, and he also uses the Leica Q for wide angle stills. On the S1, you can use manual focus primes, primes from Panasonic or Sigma, or adapted EF primes.

  • @KevinFedde
    @KevinFedde 4 года назад

    It definitely seems to me that the S1 is more analogous to the G9 and the S1H is more related to the GH5. I own both and pretty much all of the differences between the S1 and S1H also apply point-for-point between the G9 and GH5. Still a great video camera, the G9, and I got one as a third camera instead of a second GH5 (GH5, GH5s, and G9 for weddings now,) but there are some of those same limitations. Definitely seems like the S1 was more intended as a stills camera. Thanks for the video!

    • @Whiteinrevery
      @Whiteinrevery  4 года назад +1

      Actually the S1R was intended for stills as the S1 was intended for video. The S1H is intended as a cinema camera without really any intention to be used for photos.

      LakeshoreStudio4 Does the S1 have wider Dynamic range than the GH5 even in Natural (or non V-Log) profile? I want to switch from GH5 & GH5S to S1 for weddings and DR is definitely one of the weakest points of the MFT cameras...

    This is a Netflix-approved cinema camera. You can still get AMAZING video out of the S1 and the GH5. The S1 and GH5 already offer broadcast-spec 10-bit 4:2:2, and the S1 includes the full VLog from the Varicam line while the GH5 has VLog L.
    Hell, I can get damn good video out of my G85, although it's a bit limited for color grading. My E-M1 II is somewhat better suited for grading when shooting in Cinema 4K.
    Unless you're filming a real movie or TV series, this camera is overkill for you. You most likely won't use or need the features that make it so expensive if you're a wedding or travel videographer.

    First, thanks for making this video. Second, please never ever make your intro music louder than your voice. It's unpleasant. Much love

      Thanks for the feedback. I’ll double check it next time so I don’t blow your ears 😉✌🏼

      @@Whiteinrevery Thank you! I just finished the video and loved it! Very well detailed. I just had to say something about the music volume because it's constantly overlooked. Just match average levels of the audio wave forms next time.

      @@Chuchuguitar check my latest video and let me know if the music at the end blends well with the dialogue this time ;)
