Camping is one of those things that takes time and experience to figure out how to be comfortable. A warmer sleeping bag will help, but there are many things you can do to make your sleep a warmer one, like a lean to tarp configuration for heat reflection from the fire, warming rocks by the fire for warming your sleeping bag (put them in socks or a towel so you don't melt your sleeping bag), adding layers like a wool blanket outer layer that holds heat in. Another fun thing to do is hammock camping, but that's a whole other thing that has its own challenges. If you keep at it I have no doubt you'll find what works best for you, it just takes trying different things and some experimentation.

I used to Cowboy camp on the Colorado River and Lake Mohave. But I used a small dome tent or a cot with a rope around it. Mostly to keep coyotes from bugging me and rattlesnakes. Both are extremely curious. I woke up from my cot to find a bunch of coyotes tracks all around my sleeping area but they never crossed over the rope area. And I never saw any snake tracks ever.

William is such a trooper. He was not having it with whatever may have been roaming around. I've never cowgirl camped, but one thing I do when winter camping is taking a small hot water bottle and put it in a sock. I put it at the bottom of my sleeping bag for extra warmth. Also, hot hand warmers work wonders in the socks and don't take up a lot of space in your pack. Thank you for the history portion of the video too! Loved it as always!!!

    You're a brave girl!
FYI the rating on your sleeping bag and other gear is a survival rating more so than a comfort rating. I'd always get at least 20* lower than what you'll need and wear multiple layers preferable of merino wool. Also the more insulation between you and the ground the better. You want to make sure you don't sweat and keep the condensation at a minimal. I hope you have more than just bear spray out there.......? Awesome camp site!

That chili/lasagna concoction actually looked very appetizing!
I had no clue they made sleeping bags for dogs. Not sure if a tent would have stopped William from barking, as he was already barking when completely covered in his sleeping bag.
I'm sure they probably have sleeping bags rated for colder temperatures, you just need to invest in one for the environment you plan on sleeping in. Or maybe get a bigger sleeping bag so William can sleep with you
Keeping that bear spray handy is a good idea. Never know if you'll ever run into a big horn ram or something out there!
I'm probably going to try to work on my diesel heater install this weekend. I've already cut out a hole in the floor of the roof top cargo carrier, and that's where it'll be mounted. Some more hoses and ports and interface panel to a window is next. But the idea is to run the heater from the roof and pipe the heat into the car, through a panel in the window or into my ice fishing tent for those overnight fishing trips.
    Take care, and stay warm!

Then I'd sleep on a piece of Reflectix. Hammock sleeping is way better, just tie off to the Jeep, wrap your hammock cordage in a stick or rock and wedge in the rock face :) I enjoy watching what you come up with too eat, creative ideas.

I always take off my tight clothing layers when in my sleeping bag in winter. I find it warmer. People say it's a myth, but I find that constricting clothing only allows a small warm air gap between my body and the clothes, whereas loose clothing creates a larger warm air gap between my body and the sleeping bag. The clothes can also be easily moved to where they're needed within the bag to either add an extra layer around feet or add some extra padding underneath.
    Your mileage may vary.

Maybe try putting a hot water bottle into the sleeping bag with you next time and eat some chocolate or (and!) peanut butter right before bedtime so your metabolism has extra calories to burn for keeping warm :) Also I find it helps using two mats, because you lose a lot of heat to the ground. And it feels like a lot of sleeping bags are rated extremely optimistically, I always need to go to a way warmer bag. What works pretty good is doubling up a light summer bag and a warm bag, but of course that gets heavy.
Anyway, maybe play around a bit with different setups - everybody has a different metabolism, but it is totally possible to sleep warm in the winter :) Oh and drinking chicken broth is like a blast of liquid heat!
Beautiful time lapse video of the sunrise 👍

great video. yeah, I'm not much of a winter camper either. What gets to me is how long the nights are in the winter. Dark for too long. I don't even like car camping in winter because of the long nights.
The cold you can deal with if you have a warm enough bag. You probably need a winter bag, one that's rated to at least 0 Fahrenheit or even -10. Which is prolly around -20 or -25 Centigrade. Also note that a tent will feel warmer, by as much as 5 or 10 degrees F.
But good for you for giving it a try.
