Today the LEGO Group unveils the LEGO® Ideas DUNGEONS & DRAGONS: Red Dragon’s Tale set, a fan-designed brick representation of the iconic table-top game. Released in the year DUNGEONS & DRAGONS turns 50, this is the first time the LEGO Group has developed a DUNGEONS & DRAGONS set and to do so they turned to their fans to create the design, via a challenge on the LEGO Ideas platform.
Based on a brief co-developed by the Wizards of the Coast team, over 600 LEGO fans submitted DUNGEONS & DRAGONS inspired designs, but the winner was 23-year-old Lucas Bolt (known as BoltBuilds) from Amsterdam who created his version of the game in LEGO bricks. Lucas then worked closely with LEGO Design team, to develop the unique setting represented in the final set. In addition, the Wizards of the Coast team developed a bespoke adventure for the set.
The 3,745-piece set is incredibly detailed featuring a tavern with a removable roof, so you can see inside to the upper level. The set also features a dungeon and a tower. Also included are six LEGO minifigures - Orc Rogue, Gnome Fighter, Elf Wizard and Dwarf Cleric, plus brick-built monsters, such as a beholder, an owlbear and a displacer beast. Also featured is the giant Cinderhowl red dragon that builders can wrap around the tower.
The LEGO Group also turned to their fan community on the LEGO Ideas platform, giving them a chance to design the cover of the set’s building instructions. The winning design by Chris Yu features an epic battle using techniques to create depth in the image while showcasing good against evil centered around the iconic 20-sided die that’s set to determine the outcome. Chris’ design was a celebration of the game's core values of collaboration, creativity, and adventure.

In my opinion, this is going to be a big success for both Lego and Wizard of the coast. Just because of this set i suddenly want to play D&D after 20 years!!! I guess they are on something! They just need more mini figures and affordable set with simple adaptable scenarios (a cave, a room with treasure, a hall with monsters, a room with traps…). With this type of set Lego will make a lot of money!!! And D&D could do on their side very simple rules for kids to play too will adults use more complex gameplay and rules! I am pretty sure both are going to make lots of money out of this! The first set is already sold out, so i guess it mean something!

LEGO did it back with the Ninjago line where they tried to make the sets into their own board game. There was the skull dungeons featuring a spinning top for a dice piece and individual spaces. The characters had armor, hidden loot and even little health bar stands with inventories. A cool concept that the just needed to slap onto a New IP like D&D.

All the minifigs have a second head to make them feminine or masculine except the innkeeper and the dragonperson. Also the set has an adventure using the set included and downloadable. For what it's worth oneshots with premade characters have been a staple for D&D and other roleplaying games just as much as is making your personal character so I really don't see how this is a bad set in this frame.
But yeah D&D is being handled awfully as a money maker while despising the people spending those money.

Well half of the new dnd races are just anthro characters and lego has had an entire anthro line which didn't do well enough to continue on it's own. But they also have a ton of similar characters in other lines including the cmf line which would include a bunch new classes and weapons and some new races. And I don't even just mean the dnd specific cmf I mean just the regular cmf line.
As for dungeon terain if you buy two of the same space ship you should have an even number of wedge plates so you can 69 the identical ones to make a rectangle. And starwars will give you a ton of grey peices.
As for realistic terain I really wish they would make a brick box that comes with lots of dark green, sand green, aswell as various shades of brown, beige and grey. Also a modified brick box with a removable trans-clear panel in the side so you can display something inside of a it would be stellar. 2x2 round depressions in the studs on the lid of the brick box to facilitate building ontop of the lid using the round 2x2 brick as an anchor.
But until that happens bricklink or buying some used terain from megas retiered orcs, dragons and plasma dragons lines would probably be your best bet. Seriously mega had everything at one point now its mostly pokemon and halo which is a little sad.

What me and my gf were planning on doing is even though they have the four characters we were just gonna go to the Lego store and build our own minifigs and character sheets for them and use custom characters anyways since that's what you do for normal DND. There's nothing saying you have to use the four that come with it. You could use a stormtrooper minifig if you really wanted too and just make up your own backstory and charater stats for it.

Straight up, if lego made a full on playset line of dnd things it would be perfect for lego and dnd fans alike. Keep what they're doing with the Dragon Tales and CMF figs (that being they're not explicitly one particular character and can be mismatched into other characters) and scale them down in ways like the castle themes of yore.
Hell, that's how I played dnd back then and now, I just use a lot of my castle things and build smaller set pieces. A proper dnd playset line would do wonders, especially since I probably won't get the big set
Edit: Of course, and hopefully, without the meddling of Hasbro who seemingly seek to ruin dnd. We've all seen how they messed up before

I disagree slightly with your main premise here. These figures are extremely customizable, and are setting a new standard for customization with Lego figures that we will see continue into the CMF figure line (images leaked, product announced). How are they customizable, you may ask? Well, for instance every torso is gender and skin-tone neutral and all the hands are wearing gloves. This means you can swap heads around without anything mismatching. You can for example take the halflings head and put it on the sorcerers body, give it a book, and you got yourself an elven wizard. Sure, it isn't as insane as the football stadium when it comes to minifigure parts, but we still got to give it some credit for doing customizable minifigures right, with a variety of great costumes and heads.
Not to forget large amount of minifigure accessories, tons of swords, shields, and tools to customize your characters.
The terrain as well is very much designed for a DnD campaign. In fact, there is a DLC one-shot that comes with the set (I mean Downloadable Content in the literal sense) that seemingly uses the board. It's not just a display piece, if it was, the dragon would be static and still crawling around the spire. This is a playset, and a DND encounter as well, complete with secret doors, traps, a variety of potential encounters and paths. I can already tell that the innkeeper is actually a cultist of Tiamat, raising skeletons to protect him while he preforms a ritual to summon a red dragon. This set was designed to be a playable one-shot.
Now maybe you are one of those who think you need a 5x5ft grid to play DnD, and for that I'd like to remind you that in 5th edition grid combat is an optional rule. For Lego, it makes much more sense to use the natural 1ft = 1stud grid that makes any Lego terrain into a playable DnD arena.
