@@AcraniusCHDamn it, I have an X-H2s and was hoping there was a firmware update that added it and I didn’t realize. It makes no sense why they can’t add it since IBIS is all that is required for it. What kind of flagship is this camera, lol.

I'm surprised that no-one seems to mention how strange the Topaz result often looked. It definitely introduced some artifacts that weren't really on the subject. Looking at 10:17 the Topaz image looks like the numbers have been filled in with a pencil, which I highly doubt is how it really looks. Those kind of artifacts would be unacceptable for e.g artwork reproduction.

Yeah, really weird that the AI tools are mentioned with respect to archiving or reproduction, when they include *artificial* information in the results. A horrifying suggestion.
I think gigapixel ai is just giving the impression of high resolution because there seems to be some distinct sharpening around contrasting pixels (notice the sharpeness around the watch numbers). But that necessarily isn't what real picture is. I think the tool's algorithm is set to sharpen more harshly around pixels of contrasting shades. This, at first glance, gives the impression of more detail
Another use case for pixel shift is scanning film negatives with a macro lens.
This is one of very few reasons I wish I had an XT5 over an XT4. The XT4 sensor is good but not quite enough to be used as an actual film archival tool.
I do this with my GFX 100.
@@ianroe1076 Indeed. The X-Trans filter is pretty annoying for film scanning. After testing almost all demosaicing methods, C1 still produces the best results overall, but I'm stuck in the Adobe ecosystem. Looking to get a Sony for film scanning instead.
@@professionalpotato4764 have you considered buying a dedicated film scanner? A high resolution camera can be used to scan film but it's still a major hassle to get it set up if you don't need the camera to be dual purpose
@@ianroe1076 I have the xt5 but actually prefer my xt3 for film scanning for 35mm anyway. The xt5 just makes files that are too huge. The xt3/xt4 is more than enough for most casual film scanning if you have a good macro lens and scanning setup
I think in the case of shooting a reference archival photo, which I feel like is the most common use case for pixel shift, the artifacts introduced by the AI that generates content not present in the real world wouldn't really be acceptable. For the case where you just need a bit more resolution though the AI does a really good job.

Yep, exactly. I use Pixel shift for my macro work and grabbing comic still at the highest resolution. Topaz would destroy my work
Hardly an "archive" if it includes, by definition, *artificial* information. Can only assume this was a badly thought out video, or supported by Topaz, or both.

I agree with the two people below who commented that Gigapixel AI overdid the effect, trying to guess missing detail and creating *new* detail in the process. Depending on what you're shooting, that's not acceptable.

I think the Topaz vs Pixel Shift comparison is more nuanced because it is pretty clear that the Topax AI is "hallucinating" detail that isn't even close to real... the clock ticks and '60' at 11:02 show a lot of scratches/irregularities that aren't actually there. Same thing with the '20' and clock tick marks at 11:05 and the 'X' and clock ticks at 11:09. I would only use AI upsampling for general textures like concrete/asphalt/grass/leaves/fur where the viewer isn't actually going to zoom in to try and gain more information about the scene (like read small text or look for scratch marks or CSI "enhance" type fact checking).

I really appreciate the comparison to the AI tools. I had only attempted to compare the single shot vs pixel shift and I agree the limitations of locking down the camera and crossing your fingers that the subject doesn't move are a bit too limiting outside of product photography and copy work.
Hhm, not sure I completely agree with your conclusion. Try to put the pixel shifted image into the AI booster and compare that to the Ai enhanced JPEG, my strong expectation is, that the pixel shifted image will produce even more stunning resolution. As the saying goes in image processing: GIGO. Garbage in garbage out. And recording the non interpolated true color via pixel shifting is giving all processing a much better base to work from.
Of course, the practical aspects you mention I full agree with. It might just be for the one painting you want to reproduce but then you‘ll love it.
Yep Art Archival is one of the reasons I can't just use Topaz to "boost" an image. Pixel shift allows me to capture the artwork at high resolution without compromises

11:12 Some odd commentary when you were talking about the watch face focussing on the ‘x’
Clearly there are AI artefacts created by AI during the process - even part of the X is missing so I don’t see in any way that can be better or clearer than the original…
Topaz is awesome. I’m using Topaz Photo AI and I surprise myself every time.
This is a great video to show the pro and con of the Pixel Shift.
It would be great if able to show difference when the shot subject is human. Because AI sometime cant give satisfied result on Human Subjects.
The AI done well on this test image, but would be wonderful to see human subject compared too.

Ai is fine for many things, but I like the challenge of accomplishing effects in camera. As long as Ai is optional, no problem. I just hope camera manufacturers don't go the same way cell phone manufacturers did. If anyone can resist, it's probably Fujifilm. After half a century of enjoying photography, I am very happy with my Fujifilm gear and it's capabilities.

The AI upscale simply made up artifacts and changed details. What’s the point of upscaling an image if it’s basically an assumption and not reality?
Exactly, more people need to realize this. I guess we value perceived improvement over reality nowadays
Yes but those "made up" artifacts are closest possible assumption as possible. Btw every color camera is also capturing a fake colors as it is just a monochrome sensor with a rgb filter Infront of it. Infact colors don't exist in real life it's our brain which makes up colors in reality they are just different wavelengths & combinations of yuv. By your logic everything is "fake".
Ai algorithms aren't "fake" it is reality replicated/created from very sophisticated algorithm. It's as close to reality as computerly possible 😂
Why even take the picture? Just use AI to create the entire image.
Topaz Photo Ai is now their flagship product. Gigapixel is supported but not where the major effort is going. This matters in terms of artefact reduction which gets better with more training. It’s a work in progress. I like photo Ai for many things but I wouldn’t use it to fully replace a pixel shift approach
I own and love the manual TTartisan 35mm f0.95 lens, which is permanently mounted to my X-Pro2.
I like that Olympus lets you do this in camera handheld. Fuji has a while to go before it’s really useful
iirc when Sony (or was it Canon?) introduced it to their cameras it was a mess, and motion blur of ANY kind even in a static environment with slight ground vibration totally ruined the images. Over time they improved the processing techniques, so it seems like every time a brand introduces this feature for the first time they need to work on it for a while before it's particularly usable
@@ianroe1076 While that is true, Fuji has had Pixel shift in their GFX cameras for sometime now. The difference with Fuji's vs let's say Sony/Panasonic/Olympus and now Canon is that Fuji prioritizes accuracy over everything. Meaning when you take a shot it doesn't makeup detail just to end up with a higher megapixels like the other brands. Fuji is treating it's Pixel shot like how Hasselblad treated they H6d 400c Multishot mode. It's made for film scanning, Art archival and detail accurate work which any form of botched details is unacceptable

However, I don't totally agree with the comparison between Pixel Shift and Topaz Gigapixel from Jpeg. Look at @11:07, the numbers are very weird. It's clearly an artifact of the AI trying to guess the high-resolution image but reaching its limits. Anyway very interesting! Thanks!

Wow nice video. My take away is that for the purist and or professionals the Ai must seem like a sacrilegious tool. But for those who do not have 40gb+ cameras this is perhaps an alternative way to print larger images without having a pixel sift camera or owning a lower GB ( 26+/-) camera . I personally will try it out and experiment with it and have to admit this is very intriguing.

About the gigapixel, the results look believable, but they're not accurate. The shapes have been distorted. If it's for artistic use it might be ok, but if it's, let's say, to digitize an artwork, then I'd stick with the pixel-shift version.
Hi Chris thanks for the great video! I have a question here, on Capture One can I apply film simulation to the combined DNG file? I use Capture One all the time for editing Fuji RAF files as I can apply different film simulations to it. However the Pixel Shift combine software only export DNG which I think Capture One could not apply film simulations to it..
The GFX100S pixel shift files come in at 1.5GB and 406 megapixels. It’s *bananas*
A mundane scene becomes interesting as you zoom in with microscope precision. A party trick for most of us? Probably. Essential for high end product photography? Yes.

Damn, I ordered the XT5 with pixel shift just to shoot moving giraffes- I have to cancel the order now.... great video as always Chris! My next move is either XT5, Xh2 or GFX so Topaz AI may mean I can get the detail I want with an X instead of a GFX. Interesting choice .
This is a great point that I hadn't considered. If AI is on the verge of replacing pixel-shift style photography, then what use remains in medium format? I know it has a higher dynamic range resulting from the sensor size, but still.

I'm new to the X-H2 and have tried the pixel shift shooting on a couple images. Both were of the same scene, on a very calm evening around sunset. Both reported "defect detected" in the combiner app, and the dng file was grainy and unusable.
very interesting video, but is all that additional detail from the Gigapixel version real ? there where scratches, imperfections etc which give the impression of a tremendous amount of detail, but it's made up from AI, it isn't real, am I wrong?
You are correct, the Ai assumed the texture of the watch face were scratches so it "enhanced" what it thought was there rendering this image useless for more than just party tricks. You would not send this off to your client in that shape

If you only tested pixel shift with the 18-55mm, then clearly the sharpness bottleneck here is the lens. You're butting up against the resolution of the lens, not the performance of the pixel shift feature. It's a decent zoom lens, but it's not exactly a 160 MP resolving lens. Something like the 18mm f1.4 would be far more instructive here.
I'm trying to figure out what desktop computer to get to for playing and editing 4k video. Can someone help me figure what I need? I can get an i9 chip. Do I need a good video card like a 3080 or a 4090?

20 separate shots seems like overkill (compared to around 8 shots with MFT cameras, that also support handheld hi-res shots).
Is that due to the X-trans pixel pattern vs. Bayer pattern?

at x4, it would be 640MP and at x6 would be 960MP. Would be very interesting to see the results. can basically eliminate the need for macro lenses esp since it won't have the depth of field issue that comes with macro

I wish I could get pixel shift to work. I have never been able to get a image that did not have the error detected :( no mater the tripod or using the remote it always fails.

Does Gigapixel AI software alter image fidelity?
I have never tried pixel shift technology, but I’m guessing it’s really only viable for product photography and desert landscapes.
The results of pixel shift and focus stacking , I mean the final image result , should be done in camera. Like in other camera brands,it is impossible that modern processor are not able to process this kind of computational photography. I find silly that I have to shoot 20-100 pictures to be brought then in a separate software. And anyway other brands offer high resolution shot on tripod and handheld. Fujifilm get up and make camera smarter!
Wish they made it like OM System has. Ah well, nicer to have then not, even if not as well done. :) Maybe in the next iteration?
How did the AI image compare with reality. Would be interested in seeing if AI makes it up... ie does not represent reality?
An excellent video. I like your style. HOWEVER, one significant issue shows in the video and it has nothing to do with pixel shift, so may be off-topic, but did you notice the colours in the Topaz DNGs? Capture One is NOT capable of reproducing accurate colours from a DNG created in Topaz software. It is a 'bug' that has not been corrected in the latest C1. This fact is quickly skated over in the video. Strangely, the same 'bug' has been corrected in DNGs created by DxO.
Ive tried this so many times on my X-T5 and even though I use a tripod, I almost always get the yellow warning. Even when I do it in my apartment where nothing should be moving at all, it happens. And there is almost always small lines all over the final image.
But this video makes me wanna retry this.

I was also impressed with Topaz AI using an XT3 TIFF file as input. But you had better have a very current MAC or you will experience a CPU pushed to the max. I have 2018 6 core i7 mini… you could cook a steak on the mini after 2 Images were processed.
My Topaz Photo AI demo does all the work on a raw file in about 20-25 seconds.. I do have 64 gigs of memory on my 2018 Imac, but nowhere near your other numbers..and I find it is enough to just open the jpegs.
Such an interesting subject raises new questions. Which lens did you use and was it the highest resolution possible? Probably the limiting factor for pixel shift. Topaz AI would "improve" the lens rendition? What happens if you use Topaz AI on the pixel shift image? Wouldn't it be interesting to see the difference between an X-T4 or X-H2S image with Topaz AI compared to a 40 MP image?
Yes, to get the most out of pixel shift you want to use the Lens with the highest IQ. The new Viltrox PROs and new Fuji 56mm would show a much bigger difference in the pixel shift shots

I would have a look at DXO Pure Raw. Noise reduction is also far better then Topaz.
It's a pity that Fujifilm didn't introduce freehand pixel-shift and in-camera conversion like OM-System did.
Hope they did too but if I had to choose between the two (which are different algorithms) I would choose Fuji's implementation, because it prioritizes accuracy rather than higher megapixels at any cost. I have an Olympus E-M5 and the high res shot is great for capturing a but more details but it does have some artifacting that giving detail critical work like film scanning and art archival will be unacceptable

Topaz is good for certain situations but it's terrible for text or detail. Even in your pictures you can see the watch type distorting and warping because it can't figure out how to upscale the details.

Use AI on the pixel shift multishifted image. The more pixels you start with, the more information AI can add. So ai actually works best on high resolution images. Upscaling a 1 megapixel image will give you 3 more megapixels of data, but upscaling a 100 mp image will give you 300 mp of extra data. If AI is going to give you free data, would you rather have 3 mp for free or 300 mp?
It would be helpful if this video told us on which cameras this works. Either I’m deaf, or that info is missing from the video?
I forgot I had cut that out (it was in the first, longer version). Cameras are: GFX line, XH2/XH2s, and X-T5 currently.

Well, if you have the money for a XT5, you should also be able to afford Gigapixel if needed ;-)
Can't be used with strobes, so you are stuck with ambient light. This makes this process unusable for studio photography
I just stumbled upon this video and I'm surprised that pixel shift was compared to AI generated images in a way that suggested that the AI can do just as good a job. I hope it was just a lack of knowledge on his part and not because of sponsoring. To anyone who might still be wondering: The AI **invents** the details - it guesses them based on the image it is presented. They usually look very realistic and believable but they're not necessarily representing reality - the resulting image can't be used to claim authenticity.
In short, what you say, I have nothing to do with this unnecessary function.
We'll keep it between us. Otherwise why should I be proud of my X-H2?

I could use even if I am forced to shoot on the tripod, but the fact that I have to occupy my memory card with several pictures and use an additional software put me right off. The final results should be processed in camera like on other brand.
I disagree with using AI. It is putting false information there, guesswork, albeit a good guess. While, pixel shift has its uses.
Problem with AI : AI added artificial details. That's not real photography.

Yep, most youtubers fail to see the utility in this, if gigapixel can make a 40mp file look like a 160mp, then it can make a 160mp file look like a 640mp file! Which is AMAZING for people for me who loves all that extra detail

I assure you I’m not. I was going to add that but always keep hearing my videos are too long so I just skipped over it. What would make a funny future video is to see how many times you can run the DNG over and over again in Topaz to keep upsampling!

Frankly this is a gimmicky feature, only useful for very specific use cases and under very controlled conditions.
Agreed. I get the value for studio work, but I suspect this will be a never used feature for 98% of users, especially altering seeing that Topaz Gigapixel is better. Although there have been major advances in AF and Eye AF, I do wish they had put these engineering dollars into getting the cameras to focus on the eyes closest to the camera, rather than so often grabbing the background faces.

@@nikoolix yes, if Fuji had implemented the feature with motion compensation like the new sony a7r5 it would actually be usable for landscape photography too.
@@nikoolix It matters because it takes time, money and R&D resources. If that effort had been put into the AF algorithm, it would have had more universal appeal because most users rely on AF and essentially zero rely on pixel shift multi-shot.
seriously? anyone really using a 600mb for a product shoot? even 40mb is enough for huge product print... This is only be useful if you'll be cropping...
Have you never done a product shoot before? You dedicate an entire drive or card to said shoot. So yes some of the files can get into the Gigabytes per because if you are working for company like BVLGARI you want to capture as much detail as possible for their products so you can play around and crop to your heart's content

@snowhite1qazse4 old full frame would get 18mp usable, that will make you have to shoot with multiple lenses and would take more than twice the time to get the same shots as shooting at 160mp to 400mp meaning you cost more per hour of work and will produce less quality work. For an example of producing low quality work just ask your mom 😎

The gigapixel images looks terrible, it has so many weird ai edges, its making up information that isnt there and its not a real representation of the scene. This is why pixel shift will remain king when it comes to art preservation, film scanning and macro detail shots where accurate color and true rendering is non-negotiable
I think in a few years issues like this will be mitigated. The use of AI in increasing the resolution of lower MP images is fairly recent, and not long ago it wasn't usable at all. It's not good enough for me to spend the money on a program right now (though I did buy an AI denoising program, and have been very happy with the results in the worst case scenarios that I need it), but I suspect in a couple years it will be good enough.
@ianroe1076 Same, I own Topaz for Video enhance and gigapixel but I use my Fuji X-H2 Pixel Shift to capture real details. It's really for different use cases which I wish Chris would've explored here instead of rushing through a video
