    So I just made these this morning and they are amazing! I have tried yeast donuts before but when frying them they ended up too greasy. These turned out perfect! I dusted half in sugar and frosted the other half with chocolate and sprinkles. (I have three little girls) if I could leave a pic in the comments I would do so.

    These look delicious. When I was a kid I grew up in a Welsh seaside town and you could buy these from a kiosk at 2 for 6d ( sixpence or 2.5 pence ) or 6 for 1/- ( that’s a shilling or 5 pence to you youngsters ) . I’ve had a really crappy day today and this video has cheered me up. 👍🤣🤣.

    These look delicious and solve the summer SUN morning breakfast dilemma. With the AGA turned off, the croissants don't rise or bake as well, so I need other ideas. This fits the bill beautifully.
    Just a couple of questions... 1) Could these have an overnight rise in the fridge and finished off in the morning? 2) As a change up, would leaving them in the round, sans hole, fried and then filled with a jam work? Thanks!

    In Belfast we called these gravy rings when I was growing up...my English husband just looks at me blankly when I call them that now :) I've used this recipe a few times now and it's a great improvement on the one I used to use which involved rolling out the dough and cutting them out like biscuits.     At the bakery were I worked, we used 2 wooden sticks to turn donuts. Basically 2 wooden chopsticks. Also, I just received the first 2 cookbooks, love them!! I can't wait to start cooking

    John these look fab, thanks for sharing your knowledge and skill. I would struggle to resist having "just the one Mrs. Wembley", and love dipping these in my coffee... I also loved your Chelsea Bun recipe as these are really hard to find in the shops now, and they are my Dad's absolute favourite. Saffron buns also only seen on trips to Cornwall, so again thanks.     Made these tonight and they were a BIG hit. Not quite Krispy Kreme, but pretty darn close. I’ve checked out “copycat” recipes and they all just pretty much mimicked yours. Good job, John.

    I'm a bit new to cooking. what exactly is the point of letting the dough rise if we have to mash it back down again anyway? I presume there's some sort of yeast-related chemistry going on there?

      It's to keep the structure of the dough strong. Too much gas from the yeast will make the dough collaps.

    Thank you for this recipe John. However, since I suck at frying anything, is it possible to bake these donuts instead of frying? Since these use eggs and milk I would think 180C (350F) would be the cooking temp. Maybe brush top and bottom with oil before baking? Let me know what you think.

    Does this recipe taste like the donuts you can buy at the seaside? When I come from America to London to live, I visited Westcliff-On-Sea and Brighton, both of which had the most delicious little donuts I’ve ever had in my life!     These look delicious. I'd probably make slightly smaller doughnuts and get a dozen. That's a lot of work for 10. 😁 Also, I can't mix things by hand... so could I use my stand mixer for these without ruining them?
    👀 Just for information... in Canada (and possibly the US), "caster/castor" sugar is called 'berry' sugar, 'extra', 'ultra' or 'super'-fine sugar, or 'baker's' sugar. It is a cross between table/granulated sugar and icing sugar.

    Maybe that's how the bakeries here used to make such delicious doughnuts -- haven't seen them quite right in years. Multiple proofing stages must make a difference.

    Hi John. I can’t believe I’m the first to comment on this video. As always, your videos are clear and informative. I can’t wait to see how these beauties come out. Keep the recipes coming. Also, can we use oil as a substitute for the butter? For a number of reasons I’d like to make these dairy free.

    Thanks for including the measurements for fresh yeast. It´s the yeast I usually use. oh and a thanks for the shower cap tip. I am using one for about two years now I think and it works wonderfully.
