From the 1979 album, You're only Lonely, this was J.D.'s only top 10 hit. It was heavily influenced by Roy Orbinson's hit " Only the Lonely". His back up singers on the song were Phil Everly, Jackson Browne, and Frey, Felder and Henley from The Eagles. J.D. also wrote or co wrote at least 6 of The Eagles hits. This beautiful song made it to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100's and 18 in Canada. Great song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and John. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Great tune. J. D. Souther co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", and "New Kid in Town". The harmonies sound so great on this song because they're sung by Phil Everly, Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, Don Felder, and Don Henley.
He wrote 10 songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and co-wrote several Eagles songs in addition to songs on his own albums. In his 2011 album “Natural History”he recorded songs he either wrote or co-wrote, accompanied by only acoustic guitar and piano. It’s beautiful.
I really appreciate that you stray from the "obvious" choices in songs to react to. Thank you. JD Souther and Jackson Browne have sung some songs together.
Souther is a fine, fine songwriter. He was friends with all the guys in the Eagles and wrote some of their hits. A friend of mine has done songwriting sessions with J.D. in Nashville. He has nothing but great things to say about Souther. I always loved this song. I bought the album when it came out - my freshman year of college....
From his Wikipedia bio: "Souther was born in Detroit, Michigan, United States, but raised in Amarillo, Texas. As a musician and songwriter, he was greatly influenced in his formative years by fellow Texan Roy Orbison."
J.D. Souther was a frequent collaborator with Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles. He is credited as a co-writer on the Eagles hits "The Best of My Love", "James Dean", "Heartache Tonight", "Victim of Love", "New Kid In Town" and Don Henley's solo hit "Heart of the Matter". As to your Roy Orbison observation, on the 1980 "Long Run" tour, Roy Orbison opened for the Eagles. On the 2014 "History of the Eagles" tour, J.D. Souther was their opening act. I had the pleasure of seeing shows from each of those tours in L.A. Oh, and by the way, Glenn pronounced his name "Fry" NOT "Fray".
One of my all time fave songs! Love JD! He wrote so so many songs as others in the comments mention. He wrote Faithless Love for Linda Ronstadt, another big fave
This song when it came out was and still is on fire I was lucky to have been raised post WW2 ….let me say the 50’s 60’s….and then the magical 70’s now it’s 2023 there’s not a song today that can compare to this classic
@@joelliebler5690 Yes I realize he collaborated with MANY talented people (Henley and Frey were two of them). He wrote MANY songs that MANY talented people sang (James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, etc). He also sang many of his own songs. That was the point of my statement.
If you check all of the "Greats" albums from the 70's and 80's you are sure to find J.D. singing harmony on some songs. He's singing background with the greats in Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night. "Male background vocals and some guitars were provided by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. Female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt. Not all the stars were on stage."

Love the comments and enthusiasm for beautiful music. I have always loved this song. Being an old boy I remember this when it came out, the retro sound, the high tenor of Souther’s voice--and yes a touch of Orbison, but also the age-old C-Am-F-G simplicity of earliest rock. Souther and the Eagles were pals--but to hear that Jackson Browne and Phil Everly--of the EVERLY BROTHERS-!!-sang on it too--wow. Gorgeous.
RIP John David Souther - you will be missed! He co-wrote and/or wrote several of the Eagles greatest hits: Heartache Tonight, New Kid in Town, etc, etc, etc. He almost became an Eagle, but he said it was not a good fit! He wrote and produced When You're Only Lonely.
The sweet smooth and soothing voice of J.D.! R.I.P. Yes definitely has that Roy feeling. J..D. Sang back up for many folk, rock, and pop artists such as Adan Zfogelberg and James Taylor.
JD was also one of the respected few called on to perform as backup on Roy Orbison's In Dreams "Black and White" Concert - another great way to spend some time listening.
No, he was influenced by it. There is a big difference between writing an original song that was influenced by a sound, and reworking a version of the song. This is an original song, written by JD Souther.

JD Souther almost became a founding member of The Eagles but decided to pursue other interests. He did write a few songs for them over the years. In the mid 70's he decided to be part of a project David Geffen was putting together. He joined Chris Hillman from The Byrds and Richie Furay from Poco and formed The Souther Hillman Furay Band. They made some great music (2 albums) but Souther never really got along with anybody, and they split up. The SHF Band is really worth checking out. Souther, Hillman and Furay did blend well in their harmonies. Some great songs from them include "Fallin' In Love", "Believe Me", "Lay Down on the Line", and "The Heartbreaker."
JD Souther was Linda Ronstadt’s boyfriend off and on through the seventies. She also recorded several songs he had written. I love his voice and this song. Thanks John and Harri🌺✌️
His voice reminds me of The Eagles which makes perfect sense since he co-wrote several songs for them as well as Linda Ronstadt. I just read another post below and apparently several members of The Eagles sang back up for this song.
This album contained many great songs. "Your Only Lonely", If You Don't Want My Love", "White Rhythm and Blues", "The Last in Love" J. D. Souther and Jackson Brown were part of the Eagles long before the band even formed. He plays and sings "The Last in Love" in the movie "Always". Appears in the movie "Purgatory".
J.D. Souther is a great singer & songwriter mostly in the field of country rock. He has written & co-written songs for Linda Ronstadt & the Eagles. He co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight" & "New Kid in Town". Souther recorded two major hit songs in his solo career: "You're Only Lonely" & "Her Town Too" a duet with longtime friend James Taylor.
Yes, Souther was greatly influenced by Texan Roy Orbison. In fact, JD'sis biggest hit as a solo artist was the 1979 Orbison-influenced song "You're Only Lonely" Following his move to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, he met a young guitarist from Detroit named Glenn Frey. They bonded over their Detroit roots and a shared love of country and R&B music. In short order, they began working together while sharing a small apartment in Los Angeles' Echo Park area (their downstairs neighbor was Jackson Browne with whom both Souther and Frey would collaborate on numerous projects). J.D. Souther is a personal favorite. He is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He has written and co-written songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Souther is probably best known for his songwriting abilities, especially in the field of country rock. He co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", and "New Kid in Town". "How Long", which appears on the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden, was written by Souther and originally recorded on his first solo album in 1972. Souther recorded two major hit songs in his solo career: "You're Only Lonely" (1979) and "Her Town Too" (1981), a duet with his longtime friend James Taylor. John Chu, this was an outstanding submission, and Harri, your thorough review was terrific.
Souther told us that Roy Orbison, who had a hit with "Only The Lonely," was a big influence on this song. Said Souther: "I was a little kid when I first heard Roy Orbison, but he was magic. He's the guy that you turned out the lights and listened to his records by yourself - or with a girl - because he was just completely other-worldly. He had sarcastic and adventurous songs and great arrangements, and then that beautiful, almost operatic voice. Beautiful, natural deep echo on it. He is one of half a dozen or so rockabilly musicians that I really loved. When I was in junior high school was the first time I really started listening to that. But then I started playing drums all the time, and I got so fascinated with jazz, I didn't really think much about singing or making rock and roll records for quite a few years. The first song I ever heard called 'Only the Lonely' was this song that Frank Sinatra sang. It's a Johnny Mercer song; it's on a Sinatra album called Songs for Only the Lonely. There are a lot of songs with that name. But the beat that I used for 'You're Only Lonely' is that rockabilly beat. That sort of break in it was taken from another Roy Orbison record called 'I'm Hurtin'' that I really love."
You’re Only Lonely” was such a stylistic tribute to Roy that listeners could hardly tell the difference. You gave up a minute too soon; it really is related to Roy Orbison. JD Souther was an ex-Honey of Linda Ronstadt. This record was a regular Who's Who of rock.
Love Souther. JD heavily influenced the sound of the Eagles. He was one of their favorite sonwriting partners. Same with Jackson Browne. Another gorgeous tune of his is White Rhythm and Blues also recorded by Rondstadt. He and Linda were an item for a while. There was so much talent floating around SoCal at that time. All part of what they call the Laurel Canyon sound or the California sound
JD Souther was one of the greatest songwriters of all time. He co-wrote some of the Eagles best songs, most notably of which is "New Kid In Town" . You can pretty much mix & match songs of he and Glen Frey interchangeably, they sounded that much alike.
He also harkens back to a vocalist named Jimmy Clanton who had some hits in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Letter to An Angel and Just A Dream are two I can think of.
RIP JD (9/17/2024). This loving homage to the sound of the late, great Roy Orbison was a highlight of songs from my senior year of high school.

Roy Orbinson's voice is one of my favourite's of all time! 😊😊
JD Souther was Linda Ronstadt’s boyfriend off and on through the seventies. She also recorded several songs he had written. I love his voice and this song. Thanks John and Harri🌺✌️
Thanks Debbie.
Please check out his duet with James Taylor. Her Town Too.
His voice reminds me of The Eagles which makes perfect sense since he co-wrote several songs for them as well as Linda Ronstadt. I just read another post below and apparently several members of The Eagles sang back up for this song.
Great singer-songwriter and pretty good actor too. He played a fairly important part in My Girl 2.
This album contained many great songs. "Your Only Lonely", If You Don't Want My Love", "White Rhythm and Blues", "The Last in Love"
I have always loved this song, but never realized how much it sounds like Roy O. I wish Roy had done a cover of it.
Thanks Dave!
Love love his voice. You must listen to his duet with James Taylor - a version of It Used to be Her Town. Their voices are fantastic together.
The Orbison observation is quite astute. Definite Eagles vibe as he was a contributor to the Eagles catalog as a songwriter. Nice voice.
James Taylor and JD Souther also do a nice duet together titled "Her Town Too."
The best.
Great recommendation!
Oh yes!! Great song!! ❤️
I was going to recommend JD Souther Silver Blue but I noticed your name is already on the list at the bottom so you have reacted to it before. ❤
Someone here just told me i was way OFF BASE with the comparison! It was screaming Roy Orbison from miles away!
Some fun trivia , J.D. played Watty White on Nashville. He was the perfect person to play the part, plus he added some drama with Powers Boothe.
You really need to check out his duet with James Taylor, Her Town
Doesn't matter where inspiration comes from what matters is what you do with it he wrote for Linda rodstant
