Latest update as of April 1, 2021:
Alberta's top court is scheduled to hear an appeal by Matthew de Grood.
De Grood is challenging the most recent ruling by the Alberta Review Board to roll back some of his freedoms--arguing the decision is unreasonable.

Letting that man get the most lenient punishment possible is a slap in these families faces. The one with the Greyhound’s incident pissed me off so bad I wanted to cry. Like basically if you want to commit a murder in Canada just claim you’re crazy and schizophrenic and they’ll give you a couple years and let you go. Just sick. Something has to change!

He knew what he was doing. And got away with it. It’s just sick and infuriating. There’s no excuse for that and he should’ve been punished to the full extent.

I have worked in a mental health facility for many years. We were always instructed to monitor, not to regulate medications. On other words, the residents were not forced take their meds, no matter how chronically ill they were. We would sign off on the MAR sheet when they took their meds. If they didn't, we would call over the intercom system for them to come to the office. If they did not respond, then that would be their choice. HOWEVER. if their behaviour was inappropriate or violent, they may very well lose their housing. It's a combination of rights and responsibilities. Personally, I don't think this man should ever go unsupervised. He is simply too dangerous. Society should not be held hostage.

Exactly. I did date a guy with paranoid scizophrenia. It was one hell of a roller coaster. In the end, in sake of my own mental stability and wellbeing i ended it and never looked back. He stalked me for a few months, but last time i heard of him his mom put him and his twin(they BOTH had that condition) into a facility for their own sake. He used to say the exact things you quoted and sometimes started acting agressively when i forced him to take his meds. Sometimes i won, and he took it, sometimes not, and hell, it took WEEKS to convience him to take them again, once he stopped. It lasted for 2 years, happenedd 2 and a half year ago and im still recovering from that relationship.

The justice system is pretty much just relying on this guy to take his medication not to go on another killing spree! WOW! What if the next time he goes on a gun spree in a school or a hospital? Jesus Christ - why is his release even being discussed???

I agree that absolute discharges should be off the table. It isn't enough to trust someone so ill to take their medication when the consequences of them not are so dangerous.

To refer to him as a "nut job" with complete disregard for him as a person SUFfERING with mental illness is so backwards. What he did was heinous, but his reality was very twisted....it was real to him. This is sad all round.

People that are mentally ill who seriously injure or kill someone should never be allowed a full discharge, and not allowed to reside outside of group homes or facilities, must have regular drug testing, therapy, medication advice. The risk is too great.

I have twin cousins. They both became schizophrenic. They were on and off meds all the time. It became hard for them to be around us as we got older. They never did anything like those men did but they struggled with it. The meds worked or didn't work and it was hard for them. In 2014 we buried one of them. And last Saturday the 26th we buried the other right next to his brother. They were my best friends and I couldn't help them. Schizophrenia is a horrible disease that must be monitored. You can't promise to take medication and have no one there to make sure you did.

If It was Trudeau's kids both of these men had killed , different outcome, that Lawyer if it was his kid , different outcome. Karla Homolka was allowed to change her name as well, married her former defense Lawyer and also had children to him and lives among unsuspecting neighbors who had no idea of her shady past until it suddenly was leaked to the press. Telling his buddy he is going to need Garlic for later on at the party sounds premeditated if you ask me. That freak of nature on the Bus , he should never been allowed to change his name or have the right to walk . God nor the Devil told him to commit the crime he committed , that was an excuse to not take Personal Responsibility for one self. If a Criminal's Medicine kicks in , then they would find their Conscience and offer to serve their own life Sentence five times over for taking five other lives. The Court System Uses the Bible when it serves them, then they go against what the Bible says when it serves them, because God made it clear that if a man breaks the " Thou shalt not Murder " commandment, then he shall lose his life as well. A life for a life.
