- It's ok MLS. We all have our embarrasing moments.
MLS decided to play Real Madrid in 2005. But instead of the usual All-Star Game hosted somewhere in America, MLS sent a select group of players to Spain, midweek, to challenge the European giants. It didn't exactly go according to plan. This is that story.

For Context: I looked up the 05/06 Season to see who was on that Roster and saw that Michael Owen transferred back to Newcastle. In Goal II, Muñez was swapped for Owen.

My favorite MLS all star games were the ones that the announcers had no idea how outclassed the MLS was when losing 1-0 to teams like Barca because they would score early and then not let them touch the ball but the announcers would praise the fact that the MLS kept the game close
that's cause America knows only how to think BIG. score most, eat most, spend most, destroy most, create most wars, have the biggest muscles,have biggest belly.
Reminds me of that season they tried to compare Carlos Vela to zlatan, and zlatans response was if vela is in his prime why is he playing in the MLS

Liga MX vs MLS was awesome. I just think we should have a showcase game but make the rest of the weekend even wackier. Not a single person I know doesn't love the goalie wars or the FIFA like mini games of the skill games.
Ridiculous that Goalie Wars wasn't part of the Official skills challenge. We ask for it every year!
Most national teams would lose against that Real Madrid team, so I would not consider this a embarrasing moment, just a unfortunate choice.
The thing was Guti was often benched during the Galaticos era. He was a “sub” but he’s that good 😅
He was good, but not great. That Era was an era to forget, Real Madrid trying to be something they're not.

id like to point out that Ronaldo did all that with a bad knee, after 2000 he didnt have the same moves and speed as prior to that and the man still won 2002 world cup and well dismantled MLS all stars backline apperently.

Its hardly an achievement, given the fact that muricans play a different (and vastly inferior) version of the sport. Thats why the MLS is like a retirement home for old players

00:49 oh man seeing those two brings back middle school memories, back when soccer meant everything but I was too naive to understand they had pro leagues in other countries other than for the world cup
I'm a big fan of the NHL and the NBA despite being English and the all-star games are absolutely horrendous, the scores are ridiculous and the players barely try. However being a big football/soccer fan, I LOVE the MLS all-star game in it's current format, playing various teams from around the World every year and comparing the best of the MLS to the best in the World and granted whilst the European teams probably don't take it AS seriously as the MLS players do, it still feels like a real competitive game. The MLS has improved massively over the last 10-15 years and is now a genuinely respectable league and if it was in UEFA would probably be a top 10 league or at least looking to break into the top 10 in terms of both support and quality, the knock on effect for the USMNT and the Canada MNT has been undeniable as well. Back in '05, the MLS was still finding it's footing as a 'serious' league and moving away from the gimmicks and silliness that made it a bit of a joke to fans in Europe, whilst the Madrid game would have been an embarrassment at the time, it's probably going forward, that was the first time we were seriously exposed to the MLS and 5-0 away at Madrid isn't that bad of a result honestly, far better teams than that have lost by bigger margins to Los Blancos!
I still remember about this game. MLS, in my opinion, definitely should've sent a team instead of their select roster because - this is most likely a hot take - but I think Real Madrid needed that win - I know it sounds crazy, but just hear me out. The year before, they played the Copa Santiago Bernabeu against Pumas of Liga MX; and sure the game most likely doesn't mean anything - but Pumas, coached by Hugo Sanchez, took the win over there 1-0 with a freaking nice goal from Isreal Castro. Beckham played, Zidane, Figo, Guti, Santiago Solari, and Micheal Owen. I want to think there was a little pebble in their shoe after the loss because thats their game - it should be a sure win and I think they needed to get rid of that for the next time. That's all I wanted to say - keep up the good work.

Also, never liked the idea of a "All Star Game" within one league. I believe that it goes against any rivalry that MLS clubs have(Or at least pretend to have). Just give us another league game. The only good thing I like about it is the fact that it gives more people chances to watch American Soccer. If it wasn't for that, I'd be actively hating it. Now, though, the All Star game and anything similar just gets extreme disinterest from me.
I mean every other league in this country has not just an all star game, but think the pro bowl games like the NFL. It’s a lot of fun to see the best vs the best.
The NFL thing they tries to do didn't work out for as long as they hoped.
They do not change the lineup at the end of the pre season because at that point the most important thing is to improve the condition of the starting eleven and assure that they can stand the full 90 minutes on official matches.
DannyTR, did we live in the same 2005? Social media definitely wasn’t what it is today but you had MySpace, Digg, Topix, forums, etc. and the substandard quality of MLS at the time was a punchline in American sports culture and soccer culture in general. The early-to-mid 2000s were difficult years for MLS and an era they very much prefer you forget with all the new fancy branding.

If they want a good team, that they can also have a chance against, they could look inside the continent. You have lots of teams: big names like River Plate, Flamengo, Boca Juniors, Fluminense, Nacional (Uruguay), Colo Colo, etc closer, cheaper, and probably more willing
At the end of the day, it's about money. I dont think anyone outside of River or Boca would be enough of a draw here

DC United drew 1-1 vs Real Madrid in Seattle back in 2006. Then Madrid played them with CR7 in MD in 2009 & won 3-0, still put up a better fight than the MLS all stars.

Reality is MLS All Stars were playing a team that had played together for years and also had 2 or 3 of the greatest players of all time

MLS doing an all star game period is kind of goofy. The international and World Cup matches take its place. It’s only fun in the American leagues that don’t have any other competition play.

Gotta say. Soccer teams have different players every time. I call this moment players. Not for high end clubs who value their players as top class but team work. I even didn’t know chivas had a Match with the MLS all star. If they did this rematch today, I’ll definitely go see it
