Star Trek is an excellent template for exploring religion, and it did so numerous times. There is the reference to the Theory of Evolution when Q showed Picard the microbes that would become humans in The Next Generation episode "All Good Things." A marriage ceremony is being performed within a chapel on the Enterprise in the Original Series episode "Balance of Terror." We learned that Vulcans once practiced polytheism in The Next Generation two-part episode "The Gambit." Star Trek: Discovery embraces faith in the episode "New Eden." In Star Trek: Enterprise, we have religious zealots taking over the ship in the episode "Chosen Realm." Who can forget The Doctor dressing up as a Roman Catholic priest in the Star Trek Voyager episode "Spirit Folk"? And then there is DS9 which had the Bajoran religion as one of the running story lines of the show. There are many, many other examples in which religion is mentioned or referred. In my opinion, the writers did an admirable job of exploring religion within the Star Trek universe, and since it was written so well in DS9, it was one of the reasons that made DS9 such a great show.
Oh, most definitely. Star Trek overall does a good job of exploring what different faiths believe in compelling ways. There are some eyerolling moments, but, I think for the most part it has fun with the concept.
Love me some DS9.
