    This system of Guildmanship is still strong in Germany. Especially in physical labor or artistry like carpentry or painter. The average duration of apprenticeship is around 4 years. The apprentice still calls his or her mentor and boss "Master". A remnant of medieval times carried over to the modern. The company that take in the apprenticeship pays the full health insurance with all the benefits but the apprentice mostly won't receive a salary in return. At the end of their training the apprentice has to present their master work if it is a programmer or masterpiece if carpenter or artisan. If his or her master approves of the apprentice work, the guild will grand the apprentice the status of "Geselle" which is basically a graduate of its profession. Than the company either hires the Geselle or lets him or her go to apply for a job at another company or firm.

    For some reason, guilds sounds very similar to specific different groups of workforce who joins in different "unions" of today. Good explanation.

      @TheFreeThought Месяц назад

      Yeah but Unions are cooperatives trying to make negotiations between owners and employees. A guild is an organization of tradesmen or artisans who have a common goal in mind.

    James McGuire, I can't reply directly, but what you have written isn't quite accurate. Guilds existed as anti-competition protective-agencies in the later Middle Ages. Thus, they preceded the Renaissance. Further, the Renaissance was a continuation--a philosophical outcome--of the spirit of innovation that took root in the High Middle Ages. They were not polar opposites, at all.

    • @ndkblackhawk
      @ndkblackhawk 9 лет назад +2

      antharch Mostly I support you, but to label them as 'anti-competition' would be inaccurate. When you look at medieval an early modern guild archives, you'll notice a great many of lawsuits against other guild (protective as you say), but they also tried to compete with other towns.

    • @antharch
      @antharch 9 лет назад +3

      ndkblackhawk "other towns" That's partly what I meant by anti-competition.
      However, they also had rules restricting the hours that fellow guild-member were allowed to work -- reducing output, and hence, competition.
      In addition, they had rules restricting multiple-occupations. In other words, controlling the supply line.
      For example, chandlers rely on butchers to supply fat for tallow, and tanners rely on butchers for hides, and saddlers on tanners for tanned hides. By ensuring that an artisan could not also secure a monopoly on needed supplies, they attempted to reduce competition.
      Those strategies operated within towns.

    • @ndkblackhawk
      @ndkblackhawk 9 лет назад +1

      antharch That's correct, can't add much to that.

    So there were't guilds in Village Manors, only Town Manors?

  • @FlavourlessLife
    @FlavourlessLife 3 года назад +1

    Does anyone know to what extent guilds from different towns were interconnected? For example, lets say tailors in a particular town were renowned for producing better goods than others, was there any method or desire to become 'accredited' by that particular guild rather than by a local one? Was there rivalry?

    Guilds were made during the renaissance not the medieval dark ages. They functioned similar to workers unions today and were marked by fair wages for employees as well as fair prices for customers, something obviously prevalent in the renaissance, not the serfdom of the medieval times. Why do people always confuse the RENAISSANCE and the MEDIEVAL TIMES who are polar opposites!!!
