BMW needs to make more cars like this: 2024 BMW X5 review

  • We've all heard the whinges: BMWs are too ugly, too expensive and not posh enough. So find out why the £70k BMW X5 is one of the best cars they make. This is the xDrive50e plug-in hybrid, but it packs a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder engine, a luxurious cabin and feels very well made. Could it be peak BMW? Or is it a hint at the lost past?

    I’ve recently swapped from M340d Touring to 2020 X5 30d. I’ve always had my reservations about SUVs but I have been really impressed with the all round package. Very comfortable and great performance for larger vehicle. I will eventually go back to estates once no longer need to cart around 2 kids and a dog on a regular basis

    For everyone shocked at the price, very few people are paying list price for them. The main point of the PHEV is tax savings. My local dealer said he was PCP'ing these to private customers at 12/1300 a month. I've just got one as a company car lease (list price with options £86k), £1100 a month including tax, servicing, insurance, tyres (£300 a go), windscreen damage, the lot. Net cost after tax and BiK: £610 a month. Very good value. Insurance and tax alone would be around £100 a month combined, so the car itself is under £500. Probably what a fully loaded 1 series would be on PCP.

      I had too order A new car because my old one (A6 3.0 TDI) was ending. My leasing budget would have allowed a new car in the range up to about 100+ k (EUR). I was absolutely thrilled thinking I could get the new M3 Touring, a absolut dream car for me. Turned out I wasn’t allowed to order a combustion engine car. Every cool and sporty car I configured came out exceeding the monthly payment. Since the new 5 Series Touring wasn’t available yet, I was forced to choose between the GLE, XC70, X5 and the Tuareg. I’m now (sadly) awaiting my X5 50e

If I buy hybrid will it make me only want to drive it with the EV mode and Ive heard that isnt great for the gas engine health.

Gas vehicle for range and an electric for local driving. Let me just throw some facts we are experiencing. Around 230 miles range and that’s in the NorthEastern part of America, traded in a BMW 330xi and now we eliminated around $200 monthly gasoline bill. The amazing part is my wife just plugs in to a standard wall outlet and our electric bill HAS NOT increased. We charge at off peak hours. Love BMW. No better vehicle made anywhere.

      It uses regen as you drive so even when the battery is flat you get a bit of charge. I wouldn't have thought as much as another 50 miles though.

    • @mrsteve7175
      @mrsteve7175 2 месяца назад

      I think it's just adding up all the times when the engine is off. In hybrids when the engine is running and you come off the throttle the engine cuts out and you free wheel until power is needed again. It's adding all those miles up. Plus re-gen will add some battery charge which the car will use at low speeds and during light throttle inputs. According to the trip computer in my 2018 E class hybrid, the engine is typically only running about two thirds of the time in any journey, even if I don't charge up the battery. You can really get some good mpg's out of a hybrid if you drive it the right way, by anticipating the road conditions ahead and letting the car free wheel as much as possible. In the last 46,000 miles my car has averaged 44.6mpg and that's without hardly ever charging the battery. That's a two ton car with a turbo petrol engine!

  • @drunkenwhiskeyeu

    I'm currently in the market for an SUV, and I've had my eyes set on the 50e ever since the news of it came out :-) Been trying to convince myself a 40d or 30d even is a good option, but it isn't - given the fact loads of my journeys would be around town. Savings when compared to the 40d are minuscule. What has been buggering me is the 45e - prefacelift, worse hybrid performance, .. but 25-30k EUR cheaper. Some reviewers have had the chance to review the 45e and the 50e (not together, tho) and when they did review the 45e they were quite happy, but not "go out and buy one right now happy", whereas with the 50e they wholeheartedly recommend buying one. Agh, I hate the side of me that likes great things; and your brilliant review hasn't calmed it, damn.

      I'm not a big environmentalist or anything, but it feels wrong to choose the M50i - the cost of ownership is just too high, the insurance is crazy high. But I agree, must be an amazing ride

    Great review of a nice medium-large luxury SUV. I have a 2023 BNW X5 PHEV. Big enough to haul spouse, two pre-teen kids, and two 60-pound dogs. Great low-end torque for squirting through congested city traffic. 4WD makes it surefooted in the snow and wet. Panoramic moonroof makes the interior seem more spacious than it is. Heated seats, steering wheel, and armrests make winter drive more comfortable. Can pre-cool or pre-heat the cabin via a smartphone app. We have driven ours 18000 miles and spent $1800 on electricity and gas. Cheaper to operate than my diesel 5-series sedan or my diesel X5, in part because diesel is more expensive than 93 octane at my local gas station. I like it and my wife says it's the best car we have ever owned. Paid just under the $68K USD MSRP and received a $7500 US Federal Income tax credit, a $500 rebate from Alabama Power for my Level 2 charger, and a discounted night rate for my electricity from Alabama Power.

    I’ve read some of the comments about parking charges for SUVs e.g. in France. A BMW 7 series = 2255kg, weight BMW X5 2240kg to 2495kg depending on the type. So, in the lightest version, the X5 weighs less than the 7 series which is a saloon. Perhaps it’s the height of the vehicle that pisses people off. Well if that’s the case, what about the big VW vans, Vauxhall vans, Ford vans etc. I drive an X3 hybrid. A much lighter vehicle but still an SUV. What a load of crap. We can try and do stuff for the environment, we must do, but “Knee-Jerk reactions” to show we are helping the environment are counter productive and don’t achieve anything.

Considering that they've been making them almost 20 years now one would expect that the sheer manufacturing quantity of them would make them of better build quality and much much better reliability than they are at now....which is very low on both accunts.
