Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me bring love. Where there is offence, let me bring pardon. Where there is discord, let me bring union. Where there is error, let me bring truth. Where there is doubt, let me bring faith. Where there is despair, let me bring hope. Where there is darkness, let me bring your light. Where there is sadness, let me bring joy. O Master, let me not seek as much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love, for it is in giving that one receives, it is in self-forgetting that one finds, it is in pardoning that one is pardoned, it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.
When I was in a bad way and had nothing to heat my house or fill my belly,, I couldn't get employment, I went out my back door and gave out to God, ' didn't you say I look after the birds of the air, give them all their needs, why don't you look after me?' I went back in the door feeling this was the end. Then birds started dropping twigs outside my door, day after day, I checked the eves there was no evidence that they were building a nest. I began to realise that something unusual was happening. I gathered all these gifts up and still have them. I realised it was St Francis when he preached to the birds. I promised him I would visit him in Assisi. That promise was kept.
That was an enlightening lecture on St.Francis of Assisi by Prof.Lawrence. A brief one about someone like St.Francis, yet an excellent one. Listened to it on the feast day of St.Francis. Thank you so much. God Bless.
