    Would love to see post race stats on the numbers of punctures on tubulars, clinchers, and tubeless setups. Also, I can’t understand why no one’s running “rain” tires, surely Michelin, Pirelli, Schwalbe, Conti, etc can come up with a rain tire that’ll perform better in the wet, mud, and on cobbles than our regular dry road slicks.

    • @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker
      @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker 2 года назад +2

      Yes, they have. They are called cyclocross tires. They are wider, more threaded/grippy and with a thicker compound to provide additional puncture protection.
      Why the riders don't change to bikes with 33-35mm cyclocross tires with a lower PSI in survival conditions like this after the first 100km of tarmac is beyond me. That would have been the better strategy. Any additional aerodynamic drag of the wider tire in the tarmac sections between the pavé sectors is more than compensated by the better traction and control in the wet and muddy pavé.
      Just look at Gianni Moscon: he was always gaining time on the tarmac sections but losing much more on the pavé sectors. Plus he could have avoided a crash and a puncture with wider cyclocross tires. He might have won with wider tires.

    • @ezraholwerda1512
      @ezraholwerda1512 2 года назад +2

      The problem with moscon was that after his puncture he got a bike that had to much tire pressure that was the reason he bounced around on the cobbles an was fast on the tarmac. The same tires just difference in pressure.

    • @michaellaforte6964
      @michaellaforte6964 2 года назад +2

      @@The_One-Eyed_Undertaker I’m thinking something still road-focused though. They have something like 200k on smooth roads, so they don’t want to give up too much rolling speed to the pave sectors. The tire manufacturers should be able to design a more versatile yet fast road tire

    • @michaellaforte6964
      @michaellaforte6964 2 года назад

      @@ezraholwerda1512 saw that. Was he running tubeless?

    • @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker
      @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker 2 года назад

      @@ezraholwerda1512 I'm sorry but... do you have a source for that? Or is it just speculation? Because I can't believe the mechanics at Ineos would be so dumb to have replacement bikes ready with improper tire pressure.
      I can also speculate that the fact he bounced around is because the latter sectors are harder than the first ones, he was more tired and he's air pressure was similar with both bikes. The problem is still the same: tires were too weak and/or soft (he punctured) and latter they were too slippery and/or hard (he bounced and crashed). Both issues are diminished with 33-35mm cyclocross tires.

    There are pro cyclocross races with less mud than what we saw on Sunday. Even more respect for the gladiators of the past that raced rainy and muddy Roubaix on non-compliant steel frames without any kind of suspension system, rim brakes and 20mm skinny tubulars!
    30mm tires (what most of the peloton was using) were a compromise and still not wide enough for wet and muddy pavé, clearly shown by all the slides and crashes. The better strategy would have been that after the introductory 100km of tarmac and BEFORE the first section of pavé, they changed their bikes with 25-26mm road tires to bikes with 33-35mm cyclocross tires or (for the heavier riders) even 38mm light gravel tires with lower pressure for even greater grip.

      Completely agree; I'd go for a mix of tyres - slick on the rear, but a semi tread/slick on the front. I'd love to have seen a team/rider go 'leftfield' and run a gravel bike and wider tyres. But that's not going to happen - they're all too conservative, and obsessed with weight/aero. There may be only 50km of cobbles, but they are the most defining part of the race.

    When road racing do the teams use the same tread on the tyres or do they use slicks and tread tyres in the wet like racing cars?

    • @DrunkieCat
      @DrunkieCat 2 года назад +1

      Usually they use the same type of tires throughout the race. In paris roubaix they only move to wider slick tires. It's not actually slicks and there's a bit of thread on it but yea... why slicks you might ask? Well the race is 80% on asphalts. This guys are racers as well and often speed is priority and comfort comes second to them.

    • @marktranchant8043
      @marktranchant8043 2 года назад

      You only need tread to displace water if you have a wide contact patch like a car tyre. Tread is only needed on bike tyres if you're trying to grip on a soft surface like mud - all it does on a hard surface (even a wet hard surface) is reduce the area in contact with the road.

    • @The_One-Eyed_Undertaker
