Determination of a War Refugee

Kasem Zarzar was playing outside his home in Syria when a bomb hit - killing his father, brother and sisters. Kasem survived the blast, along with his mother who was pregnant at the time - but Kasem lost a leg and narrowly avoided also losing his arm. Despite his disability and ongoing health issues as a result of damage to his bladder, 13-year-old Kasem is an active teenager determined to give everything a go. Now living in Dunedin as refugees, the surviving family are carving a new life for themselves in New Zealand. / attitudepictures
