  • Shown in detail is the specific method that I use to uptune a Jaw harp to a specific note. It can be used to tune morchang, murchunga and also for finishing handmade harps by tuning to note.

    Thank you for this video! I received a Glazyrin Ascetic jaw harp recently and it was more or less a C but I really wanted a C#. Many times harps are a little bit too high and I have an assortment of tiny magnets that I use to tune them to whatever lower note that I would like. This was my first attempt at raising the pitch, and after watching this video I felt pretty confident so I went to the belt sander and made it happen. I am now the proud owner of a perfectly tuned C-sharp harp😁

    This is really awesome! Thanks so much for sharing this technique. I would have not guessed that the tone could be raises by taking material form the trigger...though it makes sense.
    I have a harp where the material was taken inside the frame where the reed gaps are and thought that this was also a way that they are tuned when created.

    Bubblegum...chreing gum...well chewed....stays inn the trigger much better thsn beeseax(especially on hot days) and is easier to comepetely remove. It also gives one an excuse to carry a pack of gum around. Some gums are more dense than others, some fluffier ...experiment to see which flavor works best for u. Maybe a couple different brands, depending on how much lower u need to go.

    Would it be possible to raise tuning from an A to a D? I bought a glazerin that claimed to be a C(ish) and i thought would be managable, but it's a flat A.

      Depending on the harp it is always possible but not advisable. If you go very far you dramatically decrease sustain. Email me at bebbcorp1@gmail.com and I can take a look

    Wow, this is amazing science. Just the slightest removal changes the pitch. And I bet when you test, you have to have your mouth and tongue in the same position each time you test. Everything is about percision.

    • @frederikmichale4146

      you would be surprised, but mouth and tongue position do not change the frequency at which the reed vibrates. The vibration frequency is the signal picked up by the microphone, so this is not the problem. Hovewer if you start blowing into the harp, the air will apply force on the reed and therefore will change the frequency at which the reed vibrates and that would be a problem. It is also interesting to me that mouth and tongue position does not affect the tuning even if we hear it sounds differently with each position. Glad you mentioned this, I have tried it out.

    • @frederikmichale4146
      @frederikmichale4146 3 года назад

      I did a little bit of research and I figured out that changing the tongue position and throat diameter affects the timbre aka tone color), because the reed on the harp vibrates in the same frequency. When you start blowing air through the harp, the force changes the frequency at which the reed vibrates and that changes the pitch. It is interesting because I do not know about any other instrument that has the ability to play in a large spectrum of tone colors instead of playing in a large range of pitches. It is like instead of singing a song normally, you would just change your voice for another persons voice but still sing in the same pitch.

    If not, is it possible to tune it myself or do i need to buy the extra 5$?

      Not a tunable harp. You can try to remove some thickness to drop into a note, but may adversely affect play and durability

      It can be done but is not advisable. Your sustain will go down as you raise the note that far. I can do it in shop the cost is 5 usd, but I am currently not allowing anythingg G to be mailed to the shop due to the pandemic.

      ah don't tell me that I live in Italy ... thank you for your availability, in any case I have already resolved; I reduced the trigger and rebuilt the ring, now it has a good ringing sound because I need it to play melodies but as you say it has lost a bit of sustain, patience!

    But if someone thinks of doing this it does not work with all reed materials!

    I have one that's just a little sharper than an F2 (87.3 Hz, harp is 87.7 Hz..(update: found a calculator, that's almost 8 cents)). I don't think it's worth taking it up almost a half step, just need to flatten it a little I think. Also, for playing along with instruments, do you sometimes use harps tuned to the fifth of whatever key the tune is in instead of the root? E.g. (for the benefit of everyone else), if the tune is in G, maybe use a harp tuned to D. Or even a major third, I once had a harp tuned to a perfect C-sharp, and I thought it was great for A tunes. I'm thinking my new harp might be good for F or B-flat tunes.

    Can you remove mass from any part of the harp? My harp has an already small trigger and I am afraid that playability will decrease by removing mass from there. I must add that my harp is only 7 cents off, so maybe I can still remove from the trigger without damaging the harp too much?

    I use Dremel. This grinder is too big for so delicate work. To make the trigger heavier, I use a tin. And of course, polishing after the job is done.

      This is a variable speed grinder. The lowest speeds are perfect for me and offer a lot of controlled grinding. Very easy to remove small amounts with precision, but requires a steady hand.

    • @bebbcorpharpery7331
      @bebbcorpharpery7331  5 лет назад +1

      Not far to go and will be simple. Option 1 and the easiest, take a small amount of beeswax. Press it into the trigger spiral. Play in front of a tuner. Add a bit more if needs to go further. If you drop below, scrape or sand a small amount of beeswax off to raise to note. This can be permanent and reversible as well. If you want to drop tune it permanently you can remove the reed and grind or sand a small amount of the reed thickness away. a small amount of the thickness of the reed to drop it, but much care must be taken when doing this as it is quite easy to go too far and all thickness changes must be gradual, smooth and re polished to avoid reed failure.

      There are a few ways to do this. You can weight the trigger with beeswax or solder to drop down below, then shave or file off the weight until you raise to note. Or you can remove metal distally at the first 1/3 of the reed until you drop down. Or if it is a problem of trigger orientation from rough play, you can orient the trigger a bit to increase the leverage and drop down.
