Don't neglect the Younger Futhark which was the common one used during the Viking Age and even the Anglo Frisian Futhorc which is where a majority of the rune poems are based off of.
"Geir" is very similar to the very old German word "Ger". The term "Germanic" is probably derived from this and meant spearmen or men with spears. Greetings from Germany 💪🏻🇩🇪
Welcome back brother how wonderful it is to see you again ty for always continuing your amazing videos I hope life is treating you very well on your journeys my friend 😎 ✌️❤
Spears were used by the Celts. Lug Lamfada also used his deadly spear to defeat Balor of the piercjng eye. Even our Gaelic Odin, Fionn mac Cumhaill, wields a spear. Lugaid who is sometimes known as Lug, has his hand smitten off by Cu Chulainn, just as Tyr. We Celts and Germanics should reunite! Hail the Æsir and hail the Tuatha De Danand!
Thanks for releasing this video. I've been looking at making my own spear, researching more on Irminsul, staffs, etc. They were a focal point of our ancestry and spirituality. You're work is redefining Heathenry from a reconstruction to a reconnection. From the US, hail to you and hail the ildra.
I did enjoy it and learned quite a lot. Especially about the spiritual bond between men and spears. Not being a man that never crossed my mind. They were just a tool to me.
Winged spear heads were often called "Boar Spears", for hunting boars. Spear heads with spike/blade wings were called "Runka". Also of interest is the AtlAtl, which is used to throw a spear further than a man normally can.
You cracked me up talking about the size of your spear man! I really enjoy your content and hope that one day I may be able to participate in your forming community. Thanks for the videos!
There are dedicated throwing spears, but it's not a good idea, in general, to throw your weapon away. Spears are better used kept in hand. Yes, you can throw them, but it's not a good idea. Javelins were intended to be thrown. A spear is a thrusting weapon.
I bought myself a Viking war-spear a few years ago now. It’s absolutely beautiful & looks devastatingly dangerous. The blade is about 2 foot long in total & there is a thick set of wings to prevent over-penetration. I imagine it being thrown by a powerful Nordic man who’s trained with such weapons thousands of times; the ease at which such an implement would rip through a person’s torso, and then the terrible punch delivered by the wings as the person is propelled to the muddy ground behind them, their diaphragm perforated & lungs torn, concussed, choking and confused, in absolute agony. Such a terrible yet glorious weapon of war.
I realize that spears were thrown in war, but once you throw your weapon, you don't have it anymore. Your enemy has it. And spears are easily dodged, although in the chaos of battle I suppose you might not see it coming. Anyhow, I would never throw a spear, it much more effective in hand.
@@kneyork9930 This is true. Usually when a warrior drew his sword or axe it meant that he had done something wrong; either he had ran out of arrows & had lost his spear or it had been broken.
The spear is the peak of all weaponry. It's been used by every culture for millenia amd every weapon afterwards is a derivative of the spear. Swords are just spear tips, arrows are smaller spears, bullets are spears powered by black powder. The spear is the GREATEST WEAPON ever made
I am a German historian now 51 years old and i remember 2 Germanic spearheads with inscriptions seen as a boy in a museum i forgot. I was about 8 years old. One, the older one had " shouter" in modern english ( german: Brüller), die other " the one which find's his target" ( der, der sein Ziel trifft ). I forgot where it was, but i was so fascinated by the spearheads and their inscriptions that i never forgot the meaning of the inscriptions.
I bought two Civil War era pikes at a auction in Norfolk Virginia late 70s early 80s I paid $50 for two I think they were still using pipes during the Peninsula Campaign in 62 which is right across the James from me
When I was a kid my friend and I use to make swords out of flattend metal fence poles that we hammered, oil drum lids with straps for shields. But my absolute favorite backyard made weapon was the spear. I always felt more drawn to a spear. And shorter spears I paired with a small buckler or targe, whatever you'd call a smaller hand shield. I always found spears more varied in use. I mean, you can't throw a sword as well, an age sure. But I'd rather someone throw a slow axe at me than a spear.
Yes, the spear is indeed also a good walking or hiking staff. I wander the wilderness with one, quite confident that I can take on just about anything that would bite, scratch or try to eat me with a good spear.
Geri which gave germani name . Edit : try consulting a antique german warrior spirit of Roman era, he will have a spear swinging in front of you and say -Gary, gary, gary( Geri)
Spearitual 😂 😊 i like your videos and your enthusiasm for your subjects. There must be a dozen jokes about a fine piece of ashe,,,i cannot think of one.
I did pole vault for one year in high school. I want great at it, but it was by far the most fun I had in track and field. If attempted with a spear, I would recommend sheathing the spear tip pretty well, as I have seen pole vault videos where the vaulter catches their junk on the end of the pole while falling to the mat. Thats hazardous enough WITHOUT a blade.
I thought that pole-vaulting originated in marshy wet areas in Europe where long poles were carried to vault over streams and water courses rather than wading through. ?? Anyhow, yes vaulting with a spear could end very badly. I wander and trek in the wilderness with a spear, and find that it's a good idea to sheath the spear head when crossing steams (such as walking across a log) or going up and down steep rocky terrain. Also a reason to have the spear be at least the same height as you. Six foot spear if you are six foot tall. The chances of falling on a short spear is real, for sure.
Stavhopp - Ännu en sak vi svenskar är bättre än Norge på… 😉 But it’s all love. Thanks for very interesting and informative stuff about our an ancestors 🙌🏻
Good video. Not a part of my religion, but I've been a fan of the spear for many years. Get some funny looks on hiking trails, but mostly wander the wilderness where I see no others. Not many understand or realize what an effective and deadly weapon it is in the wilderness. I usually make my own, so my shafts usually have some "kinks" or bends in them, (pine, fir or cedar) which give them character, but I would like to make one from a nice straight piece of ash. Where would I buy a good straight ash spear shaft? Come to think about it, I do a vision quest about every other year or so...and I do take a spear. Maybe it is part of my religion. !!
🎩Hi, I made myself a Bronze Age spear. The head pinned with copper nails, and bound in rawhide. Tip. The easiest place to get cheap quantities of rawhide is your local pet store. Dog chews.
My name Gary means spearman. It is derived from the Old German element "ger," meaning "spear," and has associations with meanings like "spear carrier" or "spearman."
I'd love to see a video like this, only about the sword. As they became more common, did they fill the role of the spear, or did it take on symbolism of its own? 🤔
🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭Long spears (pikes) are how the Swiss peasants managed to gain their freedom from tyrannical monarchy! It’s how the nation was born and why the Swiss were hired as mercenaries, because they defeated richer armies repeatedly and showed great bravery. 🇨🇭🇨🇭🇨🇭

I don't believe there is a connection of men to ash pool sticks based on our sex. Ash trees are simply strong, straight grained trees that grow rapidly and straight up. They are a perfect source for a number of items that need these qualities. They also grow better when they are cut back yearly, lending themselves to such tool handles.
@porkypile the retiarus type won most battles out of all types however the gladius was the preferred weapon of more types and statistical data shows the ratio of wins with gladius vs trident is 1:0.74 therefore the sword was superior in recorded battles. The retiarus was amusing to the Romans as they were considered effeminate but tended to win.
