Portal 1 has always had that unnerving feeling where you being alone is what makes Aperture truly terrifying. "Where is everyone?" Where did they all go? How long have I been down here? How did I get here?". Portal 2 is an amazing game, and by all means a bigger game than Portal 1, but I feel as though Portal 1 really did its best in atmosphere & darkness.

It's strange because visually speaking, I much rather prefer the art style of the second game. Yet there seems to be a missing link between the two styles that I still believe can be bridged. Some kind of hybrid between the two.

yeah, portal 2 has a much greater emphasis on being comedic and fast paced, which isn't a bad thing at all as it excels at both, but portal 1 is definitely more focused on atmosphere and maybe even horror to some extent. Portal 1 is definitely one of those games that can make you feel completely alone even with the voices of glados and the turrets there to accompany you here and there. Good stuff, even a whole decade later.
I recommend y’all play Automaton Lung. It has a similar atmosphere.

Idk, but ive always had a feeling that ghosts might exist in the Half-life universe. From the ghostly sirens in the deepest parts of the Black Mesa Research Facility, to the the cries of sobbing women heard in Ravenholm's ambience track. Also the same with the Enrichment Center. All this leaves me with one question about Aperture Science and what happened there...

Portal 1 was always really spooky to me. Sure the humor was there, but it was much more cynical than in Portal 2, and in my opinion kind of added to how unnerving it felt. It also didn't help how the white wall panels kinda looked like asylum cell walls lol

I think all source engine games are really creepy. Especally gmod when you play alone. This video might explain it.
Yeah everyone loves Portal 2 and thinks Portal 1 is boring but I like the fact that Portal 1 kind of makes you feel crazy. Portal 2 feels more inviting.
Okay, Portal was one of my first video games ever, and I've gone through multiple phases of being obsessed with it in one way or another. But I didn't expect to be able to identify a _fucking midi conversion_ of a GLaDOS voice line. 7:29 - this is GLaDOS saying "The vital apparatus vent will deliver a weighted companion cube in 3, 2, 1..."
This video made me realize that portal could of easily been a horror game without Glados.
In a way, the moving walls, the ever-changing landscape, and the hostile environment controlled by the long-dead assistant of a mad scientist is its own sort of haunted house
Some of these pictures were nice, some were strange because nothing seemed to be wrong with them, but the majority were extremely unsettling and/or cursed.

That's what I just did to myself and yes, I can confirm that it makes you feel _different._ It is 3am here and ANC headphones were not the best choice.

They all left me with a horrified, unnerved twist in my stomach, as intended. Awesome work and music choice. I love how some of them are behind the glass offices that look over the testing chambers

That one is actually in Portal Epic Edition, as CBT 18.
Portal can make you sometimes feel like you're alone, which is a bit creepy.
But I think it would be worse if you did see someone else.
The soundscapes / music really tie this together, that one for the first image is deeply unsettling. Awesome work
Bro, i really would love to see a Portal 3 where some parts of the facility are underwater and completely rotten.
Right after i saw this video i remember i went to sleep, and in my dream i was on Portal on that part where you are going on the sewer right before the turrets pop out from some holes in the walls, and in my dream i had "god" mode activated and i was swiming on the waters, and then i found a secret room that looked like 0:16 and 2:09 fused together into a really big room, and i think it was too real for it to not be constructible so i think im going to make it into a map.
i would absolutely love to see it if you do make a map of it

Interesting how this series of videos is three years old now, And after rewatching all the videos, they were still very fun and unsettling to watch. As I was a huge portal fan (and still am, nothing has changed) and was really into a lot of creepy liminal stuff back then in 2021, like its just a burning memory, liminal space pictures, and the backrooms (before it was mainstream and actually creepy), this defiantly scratched an itch I didn't even know I had. I'm not into that anymore, but it was just another phase I went through. I loved making portal 1 maps and these sort of inspired me to make some more stuff. And even if there is no 5th video, these 4 videos are all really fun, and I'll enjoy looking back on these every so often.

I was deciding whether to re-download portal 1 (I never finished it back in the day; it's so hard!) This video clinched it for me. I'm gonna download it just to have the ambient sound back in my life.

I also like that some of these images look like they were taken in the same place in aperture for example in 2:28 and 2:42 look like they where taken in the same area with the hallway except the second image is from inside the hallway, stuff like that. I don't know of that was intentional but if it was that's a nice detail
