Me and my husband did this hike many years ago. I don’t hike anymore, but I love watching your videos. I fell like I am hiking with you without my knees hurting.

great stuff as always...I might make Ruwau lake my first (planned trip) this season. It's permit season!!...just got a south lake for June. Trying to get my wife back into the swing of things. She's been slacking off for a few seasons. A bunch of excuses like my daughters wedding and a virus. This looks like the perfect get you "back to addicted" hike without tackling a high pass on her first trip back out. She'll think I'm just dreamy for not killing her on day one. Thanks for the heads up.

I enjoyed this video very much; thank you. I am planning to do this hike this summer (2024), but with the loop counterclockwise in lieu of clockwise like you did.
One small point though: At 1:06 you refer to Bishop Pass being seen over South Lake. Actually, Bishop Pass cannot be seen from South Lake; it is to the left of that panorama, and the pass itself cannot be seen until you get up to Long Lake.

Thank you - enjoy the hike! Yes, you are correct. Came over bishop pass this past summer and realized it. Thanks for pointing it out :)

I just hiked the South Lake to North Lake loop last week. Laconte valley and Evolution valley are absolutely amazing.

Excellent vid, thought I'd put this on in the background while I graded papers and well that did not happen.

I was going for something to be played in the background while doing something else. Guess it’s actually a distraction!

I tried to do this loop last year but I did it counter clockwise where I got to see Ruwau lake first before the chocolate lakes. But when I got on the saddle, I think that’s what you referred to here as chocolate pass I couldn’t find a clear trail on my way down to the chocolate lakes so I had to go back and failed to complete the loop. Not a long hike but a butt-kicker. Now that I saw your video, I think I’m gonna try it again but this time I’ll take the same route you did. And use All Trails map as well.

How miles is the loop, far is the trail head from cottonwood campground, I'm hiking Mount Langley with my hiking club over labor day weekend.

Although the trail from South Lake to Bishop Pass is heavily traveled, judging from the wear of the trail on this hiking loop, I'd say this loop is not heavily traveled. Interesting. But it certainly is very beautiful country seen on this loop! I am wondering how the area got its name since it doesn't seem to be very "chocolaty"?
Were you using some special action camera mount, because several times during the video you were able to switch from a forward view, then back to you really quick, then back...or was it just quick and nimble camera handling?
This trail must be really steep, as I've watched many of your videos over the years (I'm a subscriber), and this is the very first time I've ever seen you winded!

I think this video was probably taken in June time that's why you don't see too many people. It's more crowded in July and August.

The general use of the trail is low due to the lack of signage - which is a good thing! By far one of the most scenic, short, easy day hikes in the easterns. Lakes, streams, mountains, flowers - what more can we ask for! A real stunner in my view.
Quick and nimble camera handling it appears. I just use a GoPro with an ordinary handle and hold it as steady as possible. Hopefully the footage is not too dizzying!
Haha! I was breathing heavy going over that pass for sure. This was one of my first Sierra hikes of the season as it was filmed in June. Didn’t quite have my Sierra lungs yet 🤣

Its funny to hear what people call crowded. I've been out of here I think 3 times in the last couple years...there are people to pass and chat with but I have to be honest....I've never been on a trail in the sierras where I didn't welcome the sight of a new body. I've never even a little bit thought "oh crap the crowd". I'd heard about it at thousand Island and I suppose it did get somewhat crowded by nightfall, but nothing I noticed by the sound of a crowd. There are countless miles to travel in the sierra if you want to be alone. I tend to go alone hoping to hook up with someone to fend off the lonelies in camp. Walking alone with only transient friends is the dream. Most times they're your ride into town. Actually last time I was their ride....same same. Happy hiking

The Chocolate Lakes got their name because of the color of the dirt and rocks on Chocolate Peak, which lies between the Chocolate Lakes and Long Lake.
