    I think the problem with any ABBA musical is that a lot of their songs (or at least the most popular ones) are party songs, written for the dance floor with mostly the beat and sound in mind. You can't put ALL OF THEM in the same narrative and expect it to flow.

    • @sarasamaletdin4574

      Her problem in this video however seems to be that she hates ABBA songs in general which is a shame.

    • @Caio0_057
      @Caio0_057 4 года назад +14

      That's probably the problem with disco musicals in general, disco music is more dance music than for example pop.
      However, I actually think that almost every ABBA song tells a very clear and interesting narrative. One of their songs may be a plead, a character song or a rebellious anthem. That's why I like ABBA, the writers put so much different topics and personalities into their songs.

      Obviously this movie didn't borrow much from the show, where much of the upbeat songs are executed better. Also they had to make some adjustments to the story, which were pretty weak in hindsight.

      Mostly because it's only barely set in Greece, none of the characters are Greek in origin, the only reason it's connected to Greece at all is that it's a scenic Mediterranean locale, and Greek Orthodox ceremonies are inherently way too visually and in-every-other-sense distinct to just pass by without comment in a film aimed at midwestern Wine Moms that isn't actually *about* Greece or Greek Culture in any way? Catholic can slip right on by as 'generic but coded to represent a certain type of traditionalism connected to wanting a father to walk her down the aisle'. Greek Orthodox would code the exact same thing, but would involve actively going out of your way to do something that does literally nothing for the story but can't pass by in the same way to a Western audience because it's Traditional by the standards of pre-V2 Latin Mass catholicism and a significant percentage of the viewers would just be confused.
      This really strikes me as one of those CinemaSins-pointing-out-the-'plotholes' moments rather than any sort of genuine insight. No character in this movie or the play has a Balkan, Russian, or Rwandan surname, which would kind of be enough on its own (the only people I've met that belong to one of the various Orthodoxies but don't have a matching surname married in) and it's set at what's basically the personal low-end seaside resort a washed up celebrity retired to. There's really no reason to expect anyone to be Greek Orthodox.

      Don't get me wrong I do like Mamma Mia, but with a bride to be creeping in her mother's love life in her diaries is better suited by those controversial pop songs that are celebrated for liberation.

    I know this is really nitpicking, but is any one else bugged that for a show set in Greece, the church at the end looks nothing like a Greek Orthodox church? There should be icons covering every wall, and the priest should be wearing a completely different set of vestments. Sure there are other Christian denominations in Greece, but the Orthodox are the largest, and a large part of Greek culture.

    • @iusethisnameformygoogleacc1013

      ...no one in this entire show in Greek. Literally every last character has a surname that makes it very clear none of these people are greek, unless the leads are the one Greek Orthodox 'Sheridan' family on the continent, and it's set at the personal seaside resort a washed-up musician retired to, presumably because it's a mediterranean villa rather than because of any sort of ancestral connection to this imaginary island an Ex's rich aunt bought for her. The play and movie have nothing to do with Greece in that they could easily be set in Italy or Croatia just as easily without changing anything, except making it more obvious that they ripped off an Italian film for the plot. Oh, and the characters are all explicitly Catholic, it's explicitly a catholic wedding, and that is explicitly a catholic priest. Expecting anyone to care about portraying important parts of Greek Culture in a movie that is basically about people of Northern European descent taking an extended vacation in Italy-with-the-serial-numbers-filed-off is a pretty bizarre thing.
      On top of that, it's a film aimed at midwestern wine moms and Greek Orthodox ceremonies are...visually distinct, to say the least. It's the kind of thing that can't slip by in this kind of production without going out of your way to address it to the same extent they would have to if Seyfried's character was Sunni. Catholic slips by as 'generic but traditional enough to make the obsession with a dad walking her down the aisle make a little more sense'; Greek Orthodox would convey the exact same thing but call a ton of attention to itself along the way.
      There's basically no reason to expect this family of obvious ex-pats with an Irish last name and associations exclusively with people from Northwestern Europe and North America to belong to a religion that is incredibly uncommon in the Anglosphere, in a play that has nothing to do with greek culture or identity. I really, really wish that they'd just set this thing in Italy back in 1999 so people didn't keep leading with this CinemaSins-tier plot hole.

After watching this, I kind of want to revisit the project, this time because I'm pretty sure I could do better than this, plot wise. Which would have been AT THE HEIGHT OF THE AIDS EPIDEMIC. Donna should be grateful that the result of all this was a daughter she loved, not something MUCH worse!

    I like ABBA very much but to be honest, I don't think anyone watches "Mamma Mia", no matter if it's the musical or the movie, because of the extremely interesting and detailed plot (which BTW also was the plot of a 1960s movie with Telly Savalas, set in Italy, on a WW2 reunion party). They want to sing-a-long the great music of ABBA, which is more authentic in a theater than in a move theater. And as you mentioned, this movie contains many nice locations. And nice arrangements.
    The German Stage production, which I saw, was very good, had good looking actors with talented voices, and it had the spirit of the music. You can't always put that on screen. And Pierce Brosnan singing is really not that good. Apparently he only signed for this movie so he can be with Meryl Streep in Greece and forgot that he actually had to sing and dance there too and therefore started learning.
    And BTW: There was even a ripoff of this musical, called "Mamma - Come Together". It features the same plot only featuring the music of ABBA AND The Beatles. So you could here Sophies friends singing "Yesterday".

      +Musical Hell You left out quite possibly the biggest sin, all the implied ties that are never explained. Donna has a hit disco group in the 70s and meets those three guys around that time and opens her hotel in Greece, yet the daughter she bears in on in her 20s? Also why are all Sophies friends British? Did Donna send her to boarding School in England so she wouldn't have to learn Greek? If so how did she pay for that? Did she stay with Rosie when she went to school, which would explain why she's seen Rosie more than Tanya. But then Donna's Diary shows that she was in Greece with Sam first and then Bill then Harry, but then Harry says that he was the one who followed Donna to Greece. It would make more sense that she knew Sam before she met Harry, but then Harry should have been the first one in Greece based on what he told Sophie and then Bill was there visiting his Grandmother and then Sam( the guy she's known the longest) would have come for her last. But none of this explained. The connections and the timelines don't add up. Forget this being a bad movie, its confusing as hell and I have never been able to explain it. There are too many plot holes.

    I have questions about Diva. Did she get this gig *because* she's a demon who knows a lot about musical theater? Or is this job a punishment or something like that and she developed a passion for musicals as a result of getting the job? If the character has a developed back story I'd watch that video lol

      There is a backstory that is slowly being shown bit by bit as opposed to all at once. The "Portal 2 the musical" review was the first look into Diva's backstory, and I believe there is one more video released (so far) that explains thing a little but I don't remember which one. It was said on either Twitter or Tumblr (I don't remember which one) that Diva's story is similar to Wicked the musical.

    Pierce Brosnan sounds like a foghorn in this movie. I loved the awesome, perpetual super-Englishman Mr. Darcy -- I mean Colin Firth -- even more b/c he submitted himself to the shame of this movie. And of course Stellan -- his natural craziness added a looney quality that made for a few funny moments (the very few funny moments). Amanda Seyfried is just UGH. And the Crystal Light ad sums up the movie's tone perfectly -- I snorted Perrier all over my iPad, so brava diva!

Some of Diva's criticisms of this aren't quite on point - "Money money money" for example isn't about Donna wanting a rich man, it's about the fact that she's a single woman in a misogynistic world and kinda wishes SHE was rich!

    I hope Jersey Boys will end up being another exception to your general dislike of jukebox musicals. It may well be, since it seems to be at least as much biopic as jukebox musical. Something for a "Know The Score" in the near future, perhaps?
    Anyway, as for me, I don't DISlike jukebox musicals...they can be done well. It's just that, as you said, they were overdone...and they crowded out other kinds of shows for a while.
    I'm glad you've gone over to RUclips. BlipTV could be problematic on my laptop...and at least with RUclips, you sometimes don't get an ad, or can skip them sometimes. I'd like to tell advertisers that every RUclips ad that I can't skip, or worse, every embedded ad on a webpage, is another product that I resolve to avoid buying if I can.
    (Oh, and Pierce? I love you to death, but please NEVER SING AGAIN. You want a Bond with a decent singing voice, do a search for Daniel Craig's.)

    • @MusicalHell
      @MusicalHell  10 лет назад +8

      I'm inclined to be more lenient to jukebox musicals based on the actual artists/composers of the songs (Jersey Boys, Boy from Oz, Beautiful) because the concept works around my basic objection of "trying to force the songs and story together"--the music is already an important part of the characters' experiences. That doesn't necessarily mean they will be good, but it does make the whole thing feel a lot less forced.
      As for the Jersey Boys film--we'll see what I think in the next Know the Score, which should be up June 23rd-ish.

  • @Painocus

    The main problem with doing a musical based on ABBA is that either you have to do it based on their most vapid-sounding songs (which is what this did) and defeat the entire point of making a musical in the first place. Or you have to actually engage the subject matter of most of their lyrics.
    And things like broken relationships, depression, political brainwashing, disillusionment with the abuse, depersonalization and artistic-shallowness of the music industry, (in some of the Swedish versions) anti-religiousness, the horror of war, oppression of political dissidents, species dysphoria and that one song that seems to be about murder, rape or both; are not things most people expect from an ABBA musical.
    I (and most other people that actually like ABBA and not just their hits) would probably enjoy the hell out of that, but I don't think the same can be said about the Average-Joe/Jane who just likes to sing along to Dancing Queen and Mamma Mia on the radio.
    (Too bad The Girl with the Golden Hair musical ABBA were working on for a while in the 70's never got anywhere.)

    • @anirudhviswanathan3986
      @anirudhviswanathan3986 7 лет назад +2

      Too bad the vapid sounding songs totally FAIL in having anything to do with even the scenery and characters, let alone the story. They have a dance party in the movie and THEY DON'T PLAY DANCING QUEEN THERE!!! Instead 'Gimme!Gimme!Gimme!'... BECAUSE WHY THE FUCK NOT!!!! That song is NOT AT ALL about simply banging hot men. It is about how insecure media attention can make a celebrity.

    "A command appearance on the Maury Povich show" - brilliant.
    Mamma Mia is like Sound of Music. Seriously-Sound of Music is artistically TERRIBLE, with a saccharine, overwrought and completely historically inaccurate plot, AWFUL songs (seriously the title song and Climb Every Mountain are the only actually well written songs), bad singing from everyone but Julie Andrews and whoever dubbed Peggy Wood, and it's over long. Yet it's so perfectly cheesy that it's infectious and lovable and you can't help liking it. Mamma Mia-pretty much the 2000s equivalent.
    Come to think of it, you should do a Musical Hell review of Sound of Music. There is SO MUCH to mock.

    My school put on a production of Mamma Mia, and I have to say, despite the lack of an intelligent plot, it is EXTREMELY fun to perform in. The show exists as an excuse to dance and sing ABBA songs, and when Pierce Brosnan isn’t involved, and you just let yourself be swept up in the chaos, it’s genuinely enjoyable. Further, the pacing is WAY better in the stage show, with the Rosie/Bill flirting being better set up and Take a Chance placed before the wedding, as Bill interrupts Rosie as she fusses over the pews, conveniently adjusting any misaligned pews from the quick scene change, and Tanya’s flirting with Pepper being much more entertaining. All three dads get a proper song with Sophie, Harry gets Thank You For The Music, Sam gets Knowing Me Knowing You (telling Sophie about his failed marriage), and Bill gets The Name of The Game (which is, admittedly, kinda weird), and Harry sings Our Last Summer with Donna. The genuine love and care that can be seen in the dynamic between Harry and Donna in Our Last Summer is absolutely the reason Harry was made gay, since if he was straight, that one song would ruin any chance of the Sam/Donna plot working. The movie changed a lot of things, and killed a lot of Mamma Mia’s charm in the process, reducing what little plot it had to begin with to an incoherent mess
