- What is haute couture? What is couture? Is there a difference between couture and haute couture? Who can work in couture? How do you get a job in couture? What makes couture so special anyway? All these questions answered and more, all while I sketch some of my favorite pieces from the Spring 2019 couture shows.

Please hit the thumbs up button if you learned something new today! Let me know in the comments if you prefer the drawing-while-talking format videos over seeing my talking face!
I like both, always nice to see your drawing techniques :)
Videos w/ face feel more personal.
Videos w/o face (drawing) feel more like an educational style.
While I totally prefer seeing the face of the content creator (meaning YOUR lovely face!) in their vids, some topics when you're trying to give a lot of information in a shorter time are better formatted without. Just my spin on it.
+YoshiLover122 sounds about right
Zoe Hong I like seeing you! Great video, thank you.
Thanks a lot for putting subtitles or closed captions on! We do appreciate this. ❤️👏👍🙏🤗
Your pencil skills are amazing.
Thanks!
Yes, they are!
I'd like to add that the "Crazy" outlandish designs on the runways are ultimately concepts (like the futuristic concept cars you see in car shows). A client whose ordering a couture dress has 100% authority to customize the shape, sizes, look, and feel of the model's fashions. (i.e., sizes of bows, skirt length, color chades, etc.) The couture client receives a dress ultimately cut to her shape and her style.
The movie Phantom Thread also shows a great deal how a couture house works (though, it is in England in the mid century and not in France)
Can you put subtitles or closed captions on? Because I am deaf and some other hard hearing people also like to watch your videos. Thanks a lot!
tap on the video to bring out the icons, click on the "CC" icon for captions.
Jing A go on settings and turn on captions
Sheza x those captions can be shitty. Most of the time.

As many fashion shows and magazines I've looked at all my life, I have never had as much of an appreciation to couture as I do hearing/seeing it through your eyes! Those close ups, descriptions, and hearing your passion really made me see it in a new light! xoxo
i seriously wish there had been RUclips and there was a teacher like you when I was growing up! Your vids are educational, informative, inspiring, punctuated with giggles and wit... I have a very short attention span but I sat through without fast forwarding your vids, albeit not back-to-back, but still... sat through all of each one.
Thanks.
Thank you Zoe. I'm a 63 year old male who was never into fashion until I watched the Devil Wears Prada. Then I saw the art of haute couture through Pintrest. Now I'm hooked and will design some dresses using the techniques and art of haute couture. Love your drwing technique.
Listening to you, one can tell that you love this. Your passion is obvious. I love that about you.
Aw, thank you! That's a very nice thing to say. It's true, I've been in fashion for over 20 years and teaching since 2012 and I do love it.
i just found your videos!! it was really interesting! and i also like that you were sketching while explaning, i tend to drift off when ppl explain things without a visual so this really helped me to stay focused!
Zoe, thank you. This was a beautiful and educational film. So much personality on top of it😊
I just found you, and I'm so glad I did! Love your sound to earth approach to your channel, and greatly appreciate your knowledge!!! I am not really a part of the "fashion scene" in any way, but love making my own clothing, and I am also an artist/quilter. Keep up the good work--I'm now a subscriber.
YES! scrumptious video, very informational, not to mention entertaining!!
Please do more videos of so-called "everyday" definitions/terms that everyone throws around all the time, yet most aren't sure of what they actually mean.
Also, videos on certain fashion historical moments/designs/innovations/designers/ANYTHING would be super enjoyable and informative as well!
Thank you Zoe for yet another awesome video :)
As always, I learned a boatload of things I didn't know. Love your videos.
Love love this video of drawing while talking and while showing the finished garment. Wonderful.
Thank you so much for this video! I didn't know that couture was regulated on a business level. I thought it had to be the most OUT-THERE designs that would make the dress / clothing ensamble unwearable in a day-to-day basis. Maybe an event like the MET Gala or just the runway, because the article of clothing moved past being functional and into being wearable art.
Fashion is design, an industry and therefore regulated in ways art is not. You're welcome!
@@zoehongteaches Yes, makes me think very differently about the role of couture in fashion from an economic / business standpoint.
" I thought it had to be the most OUT-THERE designs that would make the dress / clothing ensamble unwearable in a day-to-day basis."
Most think this the case, that's why so many dumb clueless people on instagram bash Maria Grazia's Dior haute couture for looking simple and wearable compared to the crazy and costume-like designs galliano did.
@@gurlbye9942 but is maria keeping to diors legacy why not let kim be the head of womenswear
@@ineverswag The truth about fashion is the most important thing is that the clothes has to sell, otherwise the designer's work is invalid no matter how authentic or pure the aesthetic is. Maria's work is selling and that's what keeps Dior to stay afloat and what LVMH only cares about.
Galliano was the least to keep monsieur dior's legacy. he made theatrical costumes for haute couture that even the very wealthy did not dare to wear. His ready-to-wear was just "john galliano" with a dior label. If anything Raf Simons took more design cues from christian more than john. If you really look at the key pieces in maria's collections, you'd see that she does take critical elements of monsieur dior and interpret it in a way she envisions a modern feminist woman would wear. so yes, maria's dior is keeping to christian dior's Dior, not john's.
I’m learning (almost) everything about sewing, fabric, design in particular and fashion in general from (mostly) youtube, other source is hardcover books. Thank you so much for these lessons! I understand a bit more about couture today
EXCELLENT Video and Commentary! I truly enjoyed it.....Thank You 🙂
Thank you so much! Your videos are so informative and fun. Haute Couture shows were really what made me fall in love with fashion illustration and want to learn more💙
You're welcome!
I love your drawing style so much. It just makes me feel like I want to draw again.
Thank you for this - more please. The art of taking care and time to sew beautifully needs to be preserved. I’ve always been interested in, why is the art of cutting fabric been handed down from generation to generation in couture. After 40+ years of sewing I still consider myself an intermediate. So glad that RUclips is helping to preserve these arts.
You're welcome! That's really the crux of how I feel about couture. Should a dress cost $100K? But couture is the only industry that still employs these skilled workers and we need to get people to stay interested in these arts.
I love this video. I could've gone on learning more fun facts for another hour. Thanks for your great videos.
I was trying to listen, but your sketching is awesome. Wow. Thanks for the explanation.
You are always fabulous no matter what language recognizable or not. Big fan!
Wish this was around when I was a kid! Thanks so much for the great information.
You are so talented and I thoroughly enjoyed watching!
Thanks so much for the explanation, I was looking for an in-depth explanation about Haute Couture and once again you have satisfied me with an answer! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
You're welcome!
Woow that blow me away! I tought doing haute cotoure is easy.knowing that it was highly elivated the dressmaking technique.having this knowledge awakened me.
I'm a big big admirer of Haute Couture and fashion in general! I'm new to your channel (this is my second video of yours) and this video is just incredible. To see your perpectives along side your amazing and beautiful drawing skills makes me even more amazed. So fresh AND I gotta say: I laughed so hard when your mentioned the prices tho! And how passionate you were about the clothes made me smile (specially in Dior, because people are so judgy about the clothes and the house's designer...so it's great that you really liked someone else's hard work). Thank you!
You're welcome!
Everything you talk about even if its not my subject,I find amazing and I learn. I say all the time no matter what you make should be beautiful inside and out. I don't expect anything less. Thank you for your knowledge it always informative and beautiful .
Yay! Happy Sunday!
Thank you so much for this. This was a class in haute couture. Priceless.
You're welcome!
Absolutely awesome video I always wondered what people meant when the said Couture. You made it easy to understand. Thank you so much.
I subscribed! Thank you for this video. I like to watch the fashion shows and experience the beauty of what can be done with fabric. Not really into fashion, I just know what it takes to make a garment as I used to sew for myself out of necessity. I can appreciate the hard work behind something that looks outlandish to the general public. Knowing a little more about what makes Haute Couture was helpful. Thank you again and I look forward to learning more from you.
You're welcome and welcome to the channel!
Wow! I’m only 3 mins in and have already learned so much. Thanks
I love this method. I love the visual and hands on drawing approach. Keep up the great content.
Thanks!
So happy I found you!! Great content! ✌🏻
Zoe! This is it!
I have always Liked your videos but this one! THANK YOU!
You're welcome!
That pink dress drawing is beautiful!
Nice video, Zoe. I thought I knew enough about couture before watching it. I'd love to hear you talk about deconstructive fashion someday, I'm really interested in this topic.
I love you’re videos Zoe ! I am self taught artist, sewer and fashion designer, I am going to Sew my designs and post them on you tube

You're welcome!
Your strokes are awesome
Another amazingly informative and entertaining
Adore that giggle of yours. Keeps it real......great sketch.
Thanks for a very educational and entertaining video on that slippery subject: Haute Couture. You broke down what makes couture haute and showed several examples and gave subjects to research for further learning.
You're welcome!
Excellent presentation + love your personality!
Haha, I see you did the haute couture after all 😊 thank you so much for the plentiful of the information, all the best.
Thank you for a great video and explanation
amazing zoe !!!!
love listening to you discuss up close the structure/design of the runway looks!!! i always like adding new technical terms to my fashion vocab 🥰 would love to hear more!
btw, the last alexis mabille sketch was divine!
thank you!
Informative! Thanks for sharing!
I’m going to marathon watch your videos and take notes
What a great video, Thank you.
found this to be very informative. in one video you've made me appreciate all those outlandish, strange looking designs in a new light. Now I'll be pulling out my magnifying glass for every one I come across
Girl I really love your laugh 😆
I love your videos, I'm listening to study english.... But your laugh is amazing 😂
i'm a crafter, i wish i could work in couture as a seamstress. i wish there were haute couture houses in my country, though! not in the mood to pay 2k€/month rent in paris to chase a dream that may never happen.
aka i do everything from preparing fleece to embroidering
Sometimes we make the practical choice. Good luck with your work nonetheless!
@@zoehongteaches Thank you! When I say i wish i could do it i mean i'm very inspired by the craftsmanship and what human hands can achieve given (almost) unlimited resoures. I'm not particularly interested in having my name attached to big names, so working with smaller designers and projects is a good option for me as well.
Have you considered creating a haute couture house in your country?
If it helps you at all in chasing your dreams, my rent when living in Paris was about 600 euro! But also, good luck with your local endeavors :)
Singularly one of the most gloriously honest and accurate definitions of haute couture - finally someone who gets it.
GREAT VIDEO . I LOVE IT 😍, thanks 🙏🏾 a lot
This reminds me of my Patternmaking and Design classes at FIT! THANKS👠
You described that really well, thanks!
you're welcome!
very informative, and I loved seeing your sketches as you talked. really enjoyed this video. subbed :)
welcome to the channel!
Love love love your vlog! ❤️
Thanks!
:) For a person not able to duplicate anything on to paper - watching you draw is amazing.
What a simple yet amazing video. Thanks! I’m opening my own haute couture house tomorrow (not).
Thank you The drawing is a nice element as if further reinforces the artistry of the haute couture pieces.
You're welcome!
Alexis Mabille! Ah I was subconsciously waiting for it. My heart.
yo honestly I give your videos a thumbs up even before they start. I KNOW I'm gonna learn something new :D
hahahahahah thank you!
I do the same thing!

That ( haute ) is usually of a designer ~ High Style Design that is usually seen on a runway ~ Happy Weekend Zoe ~ I love your website ! Jennie x
Thank you so much for making this video, Zoe!! Was incredibly informative, both in terms of fashion history and the understanding of Haute Couture. Will definitely keep my eyes more focused on the finer details in all the couture collections I see from now!
You're welcome! I do enjoy zooming in, even not-couture shows, to check out all the details.
@@zoehongteaches If only we could have them face to face to REALLY get into all those details! xD
Do you know how many alarms I've set off at museums getting too close to garments? hahahahahahahahaha
@@zoehongteaches HAHAHAHAHA!!! Lmao
Great video…precise explanations. 😊
Awesome information regarding hot couture.. never knew all this detail about it earlier..
Thank u zoe 💕
You're welcome!
It's amazing thanks for make video❤
So loved seeing you sketch as you explained(not that I don’t like seeing your face in videos!) 😁 And very glad to have someone explain that couture doesn’t merely mean expensive and this is why...... PS loved your use of “insouciant” That made my day ❤️👏🏻
I like to think I have a decent vocab but I definitely simplify my videos for my ESL/EFL audience but sometimes I get excited! hahaha~
Your so talented ☺️
This is another epic knowledge filled video 👏
Thanks!
wow i’m relatively new in the fashion world so this is very helpful thank you! i subbed and liked!
Welcome to the channel!
Me too
So informative! Thank you!!
You're welcome!
I love couture details I grew up on Vogue and I use to watch a show Style with Elsie Clinch I,m an Up and coming Designer and I call my business Couture I may not be some big Fashion House but I put a lot of work by hand in my creations Couture is what you want it to be to anyone its an ART weather High or Low France wanted it to be exclusive back in the days to keep some people out because they wanted it to be something for only the Rich but how I feel everyone put blood sweat and tears in their creation Draping , Sewing Hemming , Ironing , Beading blah, blah blah I really loved how Mass production came in and took over Thanks for sharing your knowledge about Couture.
It would be more honest and better if you use the term "Demi Couture" since it implies high craftsmanship without the strict regulations. Just because you put blood, sweat and tears into a dress doesn't make it Couture. Couture has regulations to protect the status of the brands, the ateliers and the clients who buy these garments. Calling your brand Couture when it's not is false advertising.
Thanks for this great video... What you describe is exactly how I sew the authentic Reproduction clothing I make only using the finest silks, cottons, wool, & rayon... only natural fibre fabrics... Hand beading... Hand made authentic Antique laces over 100 years old hand made laces... hand embroidery... I love it even if it takes weeks to make one garment.. My favourite designer is Guo Pei
Yes part 2 please Bertain and worth
Love this! So important that people understand the importance of Haute Couture. I love enlightening people that think 'the stuff on the runway is ridiculous and no one will ever wear it'
❤
i'm french and i really love your accent !! ( no sarcasm ) and also your design !! love youuuuuuuu
Merci! I guess all those years of watching fashion television has finally paid off!
@@zoehongteaches hahaha
Thanks. Lub you 2
THANK YOU for making this video! I know you said you weren't interested in it but this really helps disambiguate what couture is for me as a student at a commercial centric university
You're welcome! hahahaha Yes, I didn't really want to do it, but it is something a lot of people wanted to learn and something worth learning so I capitulated to my subscribers! heeheehee (nice name!)
I loved this. Learned something, and it's weirdly meditative- beautiful clothes, beautiful drawings.
Thanks!
