I love how Cliff not only looks like two different people, but manages to sing in entirely different styles for each character. That is REALLY hard to do! Man, his career path is so sad. The guy deserved so much better!
I love how intelligent the technical performance is here. As Farley, de Young sings in full chest, even using some focal fry on the highest notes, with bravado and bombast to hiding a facade of rejection and abandonment issues. For Brad, he uses falsetto to hit the high notes and holds back his vocal performance even during the easier sections to show that Brad is his own man and doesn't need to project an aura of hyper-masculinity. It's brilliant.
I love the fact that this movie has a duel duet between a pair of identical twins that takes place in their heads, because as we (now) know all twins are telepathic. Great stuff.
Over the years, I've come to the realization that "Shock Treatment" may in fact be the greatest film ever made, but the human species is to dumb to recognize it.
Thank goodness someone else realizes how good this movie is! It may not be the rocky horror, but not once at any point does it TRY to be the rocky horror. It still has Richard o brians brand of quirky characters and infectiously catchy songs.
A lot of the hate that goes on in the film is because people expected this to be another Rocky Horror, which wasn't. I feel like that was for the best. It wasn't gonna live up to the phenomenon of that film so it was made to be it's own entity, albeit one ahead of its time.
If it didn't have the expectations of Rocky Horror looming over it, I think it would have done a lot better both at the box office and in film history. I feel like this one might actually be more accessible to the younger generations now - the changes in how gender is percieved gave us that mess of a RHPS remake, but Shock Treatment was actually way ahead of its time
Many people don't realize that they're the same actor before the end, that says a lot about Cliff DeYoung's performance(s). I remember reading that the movie wasn't so well received because people missed Tim Curry. I don't, Cliff DeYoung totally fills his shoes.
+An Di Not to mention Tim Curry would've been playing both Brad and Farley, from what I read. He didn't think he could do a convincing enough American accent, so he turned it down
Mark Carpenter - To hear Curry's American accent, see the soundtracks for the London and Roxy versions of the Rocky Horror Show stage production. You'll see that he kinda had a point about his American accent not being good enough.
Yeah I think having Tim Curry play Brad would have been really confusing, lol. And bizarre. I can see him as Farley...you know, again, a kind of sleazy but charming/magnetic character that has his little minions working for him...there'd be some parallels. But then to play Brad, too...huh? The first time I watched Shock Treatment, no, I didn't know they were the same actor (Farley and Brad)! I started watching half of it and stopped and looked it up, and then I found out they were the same actor. But for the first half (with no knowledge going in), I didn't pick up on that.
In the DVD commentary, Cliff said that Jack Nicholsen was the inspiration for Farley and David Eisenhower was the inspiration for Brad. He pulled both performances off brilliantly here as well as do an excellent patter-song ala Gilbert & Sullivan! No easy feat that!
@@VinluvAntonHandesbukiaI would say nostalgia buff in that having Janet sing "In my own way" reminds me of Billie Holiday's "In my own fashion." He respects the past while not being trapped by it.
When I saw this, I always thought of it more as Farley having an internal crisis with his good side being represented by Brad and himself representing his evil side
Damn it I love that song. That man is one hell of an actor and fact that he can not only sing really well, but sing really well in two completely different voices, remarkable.
ACTUALLY Barry Bostwick was originally asked, but he couldn't because of filming commitments. The second person they asked was Tim Curry, but he felt that his American accent wouldn't be convincing enough. Then they went to Cliff.
when i first saw this movie, i couldn't hardly believe that these two characters were played by the same person. that's talent right there. LOVE THIS MOVIE!
when i was watching this movie the thought never came to me that brad and farley are the same actor. why? because cliff de young is a great actor. job well done sir.
This song is great in general. It’s just the movie didn’t really have a plot so that’s where I think it failed. Cliff was great as Brad, and also pulling off Farley at the exact same time. This was the early 80’s when they made this so it must’ve been harder to do this than it is now a days. Now in my opinion Barry Bostwick will always be Brad Majors, but I can see Cliff pulling him off.
And you're a blind alley cruiser Always heading down a losing strait Dreaming that you're screaming at fate You're a dead end dead beat nowhere mister With a kiss like a Mississippi alligator's sister
@horseknuckle It's kind of hard to explain but easy to grasp once you understand it. Denton is brainwashed by a 24 hour channel, and the couple is thrust into the middle. Everyone hosting shows are actors. Brad is "committed" because he can't get himself together (a role reversal from RHPS: Janet's wearing the pants), while she's made to be a star via Farley, who has a ulterior motive for trying to wedge the couple while everyone else plays along with the "shows". Think of society and TV today.
Well actually the original script for this movie was titled "The Brad and Janet Show" which would have went in between "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" and " Revenge of the Old Queen" (Which your right was an actual working title but was never filmed), however; due to a strike in the American Film Industry, and quite a few other reasons, the script was changed to what became to be "Shock Treatment". Also, because of the strike the movie was filmed in the UK instead and the budget was cut a lot.
In a world where reality Television equates to entertainment; this 1981 midnight movie companion to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, "Shock Treatment" was ahead of its time ; in entertainment- and a warning.
I have a little headcanon that its all set after rocky horror and farley is still brads brother but brads actually afraid of what he became during the first film and repressed it so much that janet put him him in the situation he finds himself in because of it were. his brother who never had franknfurter mentally mind fuck him is a capitalisic sadist fuck who wants nothing but the world. Janet has basically kept that part of herself to just that until doctor cosmo, farely and company rip open old mental wounds and she is drugged to stop her from rejecting the plans of farely. Yeah i only watched this film twice but yeah thats that i suppose
I think what he means is that Cliff DeYoung was originally asked to play the original Brad from RHPS. But he had to turn it down because of his schedule.
Cliff did one of the best dual performances I have ever seen in this movie. I feel kinda wierd about it though 'cause I don't know any of his other films. :(
@WutTheFukisThis Same writer, same main characters (Brad and Janet) , Same World (denton USA, just pay attention at the wedding at the beginning o rocky horror), its not a sequel but tells what happened to Brad and Janet after getting married, the sequel was going to be named "revenge of the old queen" but was never filmed.
I was actually as confused as hell the first time I saw this and thought "nope, how the fuck are they supposed to be related"...then I found out they were played by the same actor. But what the fuck was up with the lyric "You lost your baby when you lost your balls"?
Morbius Fitzgerald Yeah, at the beginning of the movie he was kind of meek and mild, compared to how he starts off in RHPS (if you see them as one following the other). Janet even gives the "It's alright, everything's going to be alright" line from the other film when he acts nervous.
also keep in mind this originally was going to be a duet with Riff Raff and Frank when RO'B wrote the song for an earlier script. (Kinda explains why identical twins would call each other ugly, that alligator line was too good to throw out)
I know this is late but it refers to the first draft of the movie before it became shock treatment. It's supposed to be a duet between frank n furter and Brad. In this story Janet is pregnant with Frank's baby.

Mark Carpenter - To hear Curry's American accent, see the soundtracks for the London and Roxy versions of the Rocky Horror Show stage production. You'll see that he kinda had a point about his American accent not being good enough.
Tim Curry is a more sensual man. I mean in all of his movies he has his famous accent (except for It) and it'll be weird to play both manly men

Shock Treatment did for TV (and reality shows before reality shows were even a thing) what RHPS did for classic sci fi movies.
Cliff DeYoung does this like a boss. A BOSS, I TELL YOU.
Very underrated actor and Musician. Brad always reminds me of Scott Summers and Janet is Jean Grey 😁

cliff de young having a duet with himself. lol

This song is just so historic, because I don't think one actor has ever had a duet with themselves before or since.
I can think of one. Hasselhoff in Jekyll and Hyde. But DeYoung nails this.
@SaffronSnape It's the emotion of it. There's something that puts it above just a good song.
@CountryboyGamer The only change IIRC was that they played up the visual of the town living in a sound stage building in the revised script.

why did farley take off two layers of his clothes in some scenes?
Muffin tabbycat - I noticed that he lost those outer layers at around the same rate that he was losing his composure.
