One of your earlier videos introduced me to Year of the Durian and I've been meaning to thank you. I've ordered twice from them and I can now totally understand why people get so obsessed about durian. Fabulous fruit and a great company.
The only time I had Durian was in Kota Bharu, Malaysia, close to the Thai border. It was bought in the local market. It had a creamy caramel taste with a hint of eggy onion and a whiff of petroleum. Delicious! :)
I relocated to Singapore in 1989 and I remember riding the MRT for the first time and seeing a sign saying NO DURIANS and thinking to myself: Who are these people and why aren't they allowed on the train? 🤣
I love all the durians I get from Lindsay! She selects only the best durians from South East Asia! I'm glad she sent you some and thanks for making this video. Durian is such an underestimated fruit.
My favorites out of the frozen ones I ordered from yearofthedurian were the Nuanthongchan, Nokyib, and Ganyao. All of these don't freeze rock hard, they are still soft enough to eat right out of the freezer. I prefer them in this icecream like form rather than letting them get goopy. For anyone on the fence, I thought these were delicious and not particularly challenging when eaten like this. First time eating real durian btw.
ive had multiple packs of each kind on this thai run it really depends on each individual durian that is packed you can have all of them be dense cookie dough with deep yellow colors some were possibly as ripe as possible others had ripened off tree for a bit or were not 100% over ripe. there is a crossover
I don't want to say I'm afraid of durian, but I also don't want to spend potentially a lot of money on a food that will make me gag. I need to get some friends together to pitch in and have a durian tasting party or something.
Just convince your friends that eating Durian is a Right of Passage for Asia membership. I found that once Thais see that you can enjoy Durian, you are acceptable as a local foreigner. Remember, that if you are new, it may take a few tries. Then it is very enjoyable.
Durian is way more fun with friends, especially if you buy a few types at once. If you've never had durian before, it's good to get a few varieties at once because they do taste quite different (different flavor and even texture) and you'll be able to figure out what you like :)
I'm from the States, living in Taiwan. I love durian. Don't let the bad press scare you away. It doesn't have an overwhelmingly nasty stench, and it doesn't taste like your uncle's gym socks. It just smells and tastes weird. It smells and tastes like a very weird combination of things you've had before, but never all together. And you may not like it at first, but it is absolutely a taste worth acquiring.
Cool video! I ordered some funky ones from Year of the Durian. I think it was ones from the Philippines. Despite the initial scent they were awesome. Most people first try the Montong slow frozen and artificially ripened from an Asian grocery which was my initial experience. You are spot on in your assessment of those. Simply awful.
Awesome video thank you ☺️. I would love to try durian one day, I like a lot of funky flavours so I may like it. Not available here sadly . Much love and be blessed 🙏
@@Straystar1235 they are toxic to even humans in large amounts. Most of the toxins are in the skin of the avocado. They are largely safe for dogs and cats In small amounts
I recently tried the Thai durian box from Year of the Durian as well. I really enjoyed it. I don't remember the Nokyib being as intense. That was by far my favorite of the 6 varieties I tried. I didn't like the texture of the Chanee personally. I generally prefer a firmer texture.
Hey, there! I watch your videos for a really long time, and I would like to say that your content is amazing! I am absolutely inspired by your content, as I am also a fan of finding weird stuff on the wild, like fruits! And I am also making a game mod that will add a lot of these elusive fruits! 🤔 He said: "This particular durian has a very similar consistency to whipped cream, but with only a slight onion-ey flavor". Yep, I hate it when whipped cream is excessively onion-ey! 😁
@@GeminiWoods If you cant find fresh fruit, your best bet is to try durian ice-cream ( not just durian flavored ice-cream but the one with real durian flesh )
Mark Wiens had a RUclips episode with Lindsey (Year of the Durian) exploring unique Durian varieties, especially on old trees, but I think this was maybe way SW Thailand?
FYI Nokyib = นกหยิบ in thai translate to Nok => bird + Yib => picking. A durian that bird are picking Kanyao = ก้านยาว Kan mean wood branch + Yao mean long. The fruit literally hang under really long branch Chanee = ชะนี mean gibbon Also, Ko Chang = เกาะช้าง. Ko mean island, Chang mean elephant
you should try a bit of each section she included for the review the 3 pieces/sections of ganyao all looked to be different durians with different colors density etc.i was preferring the softest pieces, with the driest flesh, most yellow color in my packs. there is even some variety between the top and bottom piece in each section
Ehhh, I really wish you get to try fresh Ghanyao. It's supposed to be firm (more than Chanee or Mhonthong), not mushy like that. Also, there's another durian with a similar name to Nokyib called Nokgrajib. Hope you get to try that one eventually.
Wanna ask,do you like durian that tastebitter better? In my area the favourite ones is the bitter ones (thats what we usually say, the durian that taste bitter is better)
based on his reviews of some of our other durian, I think Jared usually likes sweeter durians and sometimes with a hint of alcohol. But we'll have really bitter ones later this year so we could try those out on him :)
@@YearoftheDurian I've checked your site and ir is amazing even i dont know that lai durian is in Indonesia although I live there xD but I notice you havent go to Sumatra yet based on your durian map in Indonesia. Durian here is typically bitter

Malaysia has some good stuff year of the durian should have the black thorn and red prawn again soon in the boxes its been about a year since last round . this Thai batch was pretty amazing
Found some frozen durian pieces, frozen durian with rice pudding and freeze dried durian in a local chinese supermarket. Its the closest im getting to affordable durian... what should i expect? o.o
Can you tell me what this is? My Thai wife calls it a fruit, but it has a hard shell and is eaten cooked. The taste is similar to cooked jackfruit seeds which I like. It is growing in the water. The durians here in Thailand get ever more expensive because there is a big export market to China.
YOD has it listed as puangmanee in this round of thai boxes. its insanely good ,very dense you end up sucking on the seeds chasing the flavor .supposed to be a special one 1/5 the size of a normal monthong
They are fantastic but not good for most people. It is quite pungent and can annoy neighbors a block away. The smell is tough on most people and taste is still tough. Best way to introduce is by Durian Ice Cream or Durian Smoothies
Think of Caramel custard with a bit of rum raisin. But place the rotten onion in the garbage can in your kitchen, it has a little smell like that sometimes

check year of the durian she ships to more then America and prices are very reasonable

Strange flavors… I grow Chicago Hardy figs that taste like watermelon, I guess that flavor gets everywhere.
Nok-yip is an old-local variety. Interestingly, it's known for their less funky smell, less intense sweetness, and more creamy.
