WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

That mook is just so creamy and dreamy! Great video! My favorite two knappers doing a collab! I love it!
Love that Mook, Point turned out beautifully Patrick 😎🏹
Thanks Michael
That small copper indirect left some beautiful flake scars
Yes
Turned out really nice.
Thanks Danny
Beautiful work and stone! Thank you
Hello. It’s good to see you. Enjoy new tools and good material to work with take care.👍🙏
You too, Jeff
Beautiful point Patrick! Glad it didn’t snap.
Ridiculously beautiful point!
Thank you!
Nice camera angle. Thank You.
You're very welcome
What a beautiful point , Patrick
Thank you
Wow, you did a great job on that point really nice material. Thank you for another great video. Take care.👍🙏
That last flat slab edge removal was as almost as sweet as the stone. Slabs were, and still are, my biggest challenge, so much so that I haven’t hit a slab in well over a decade.
Beautiful piece.
A decade? Dang
@@KnapperJackCrafty
I know….
Beautiful job, I wish I could bid on it in the auction 😢
I love the way you just speak your mind
Thanks. 😊
Always good stuff..
Thanks
Beautiful work sir.
Thanks
Over thousands of yrs.. Native Americans didn't haul bad rock dozens of miles, they chose the best rock available to them. Most of the stuff available today, was passed over by them. That is a super nice point.. Excellent work!
Years ago I spent a lot of time walking farm fields looking for points. There were some that were very well made, and some that were very crude, and some inbetween. I attributed this to the points being from vastly different time periods.
Sometimes, that's true. But there are many times where there are different skill levels of the knappers that are making the same point style. Cahokia arrowheads are a good example. Most are crude or in between.
Very nice stone mate
I was just flaking a point out of some really old glass and a sliver came off and cut my thumb, it doesn't happen often but I just patched it up and finished.😂

Hat Jack i have been watching I am trying to learn indirect could you explain angles you use for thinning
Use the same angles that you use for pressure flaking.
if mookaite was 2 bucks a pound it would be the perfect rock to learn on. i love it. great point brother
I agree
I just looked up what mookaite is. I swear I found a stone very similar to that. I just don’t remember where.
Oh dang. You gotta search that memory...
@@KnapperJackCrafty I live on the eel river watershed in NorCal. It’s geologically diverse and huge. There’s obsidian, jade, opal, jasper, moonstone, flint, petrified wood and fossils in one watershed. It’s surprising what minerals show up while walking the riverbank.
@@tylergrunert sounds awesome. You might be able to sell some of that stuff.
Great point!! Beautiful stone! When you first started, how often were you knapping? Everyday, twice a week, just curious. I only get to knap 2 times a week, if I am lucky. 😎
I think I was knapping a minimum of 8 hours a week. Usually 2 hours a day.

Jack did you heat treat the Mookaite prior to knapping it?
Yes, it's heat treated but not by me. I think it needs 500°F but I'm not sure
So if everything drives you nuts is it a short drive to get there?
Oh yes
I've been making some wonky points lately... yeah
Cool. 😎

Probably not. It's a very dangerous game.
