This is so great! Unless you're there in person, most people have never seen someone work up to a trick. The whole process of taking small steps to overcome fear and then committing. Textbook.
It was a funny coincidence to see you post this today- I just slid a (park) handrail this morning for the very first time. I’m in late 30s too and never had it in me to try it before; it was always such a huge mental hurdle. I had a pretty similar experience working up to it as your video so it was fun to watch. Stoked I got it and stoked you got it back, Ben!
Proud of you, bro. You nailed it! At 48, back skating for a few months, doing powerslides, revert slides, slappie grinds and manuals...I'm really wanting to get ollies back...and also 180 no complies. I just can't commit to them. So I'm doing ollies to axle stall (frontside) to build confidence and control and get that "ollie feel" back. It's been easily a decade since I did an ollie...maybe 28 years since I did them frequently and with meaningful control (able to ollie into board slides, lip slides, hurricanes and 50-50s). For the no-complies...they're right there but for the landing. Just have to commit to it. I'm tentatively trying frontside 180 shove-its too...so sad. Such an easy trick and I'm a chicken shizzle. An all padded (and helmeted) out chicken shizzle. But about a month ago, I was scared to try backside 180 revert slides. Now I do them all the time. You have to know when to hold back and build confidence...and when to go for it...especially when you're older and haven't done stuff in awhile. But when you get to that no excuses place...it's time to start going for it. P.S. Recorded my first clip! This is my current distance record for manuals: ruclips.net/video/4dYJt1uq5JQ/видео.html.
Man, I'm one of those guys that gets really sketched out about stuff like that big strip of tar at the landing. If I'm rolling up to a box and there's a leaf blowing around 8 feet to my side I'll fixate on it like "what the hell is that leaf doing...you stay away leaf". That tar strip would dominate my mind.
Watching your persistence on something that frightens you has inspired me to try to quash my fakie demons tomorrow. Glad to see it's not just us novices that struggle. Thanks Ben you're the best!!! 🔥🛹💯
I loved watching this because this is exactly what I do every time I go out to skate and try to land a kick flip. I’m determined to land one next time I go out now.
I love that you show the full struggle. I started skating after 15years last year and went through the same process but for a mini flat bar and this really gives me the inspiration to go a bit longer next time 🤘🤘
My biggest fear is not getting my front trucks over and body weight on top, once I’m up there I’m not too scared of down rails, it’s just that classic leap of faith
Damn that park is crusty eh? I skated one like that a few weeks ago. It adds a whole new element of fear sometimes when the surface of a park is kinda chunky I find. Good on ya
You can do so many tricks I can’t (blunt, frontside flips, backside tails) but I could front/backside boardslide that rail easily lol. Im a 33 yr old former skater who’s very rusty
The only handrail I’ve ever had the nerve to try is the 3 flat 3 handrail at St. Pete skatepark in Florida when I was like 17, seriously tried boardsliding it after doing the set but never landed the board slide I remember feeling cool cause I was the only one of my friends that tried it, I’m 29 now and want to do handrails again but the impact from like a 5 stair kills my back and neck now :( maybe sports medicine doctors can massage back to shape or something but I doubt it
Don't wana be a dick but I know he is a very good skater and with a bit of will and courage you could pull a front board in a few tries after that. still keep it up man
Clean!!! Touching the obstacle and realizing you didn't die is always the first step. Jumping on and bailing is the second. Learning safe consistent bails is the third, then finally you get the muscle memory and control to make the trick. Progress is a beautiful thing.
Well that's a big part of skateboarding, to conquer your fears. I'm stoked you made it. Handrails are so much fun but terrifying at the same time. Greetings from Germany!
@@steve00alt70 glad to hear it my dude, keep at it, it's easy to get discouraged but so worth it im in pain now but im so glad I skated til I heel flipped yesterday
Who did not cheer when you finally landed that?? I gotta give you some props here for doing a skate video where a central theme is facing fear. Seeing your determination in facing you fears here was pretty damn impressive I gotta say. I’m 46 and started skating in the late 80’s. These days I just cruise and roll down the shitty alleys of east Van rolling over glass and rocks on my 55mm 86a Acid Pods. I was not born with much athletic talent and I was born to cautious by nature...and I’m also 6 foot 1 and 190lbs...not really ideal factors for skating but I love it anyways. Despite the challenge of the activity, I was out there facing fears...talent, style and skill was always subpar BUT I was still out there facing fear. And overcoming fear builds confidence that is transferable to other areas in life. Skateboarding is fun, and overcoming fear is super fun! Great channel man...I actually really enjoy the discussionS of the finer details of decks/wheels/trucks etc...I’ve been building “old timer” low vibration setups as a hobby while I’ve been introducing my sons to skating. My favourite setup for cruising is a modern 8.3 version of a Blockhead Hard Times deck. I ride hollow indys with medium bones bushing and the riptide pivot cups. I use the thin Dooks shock pads as risers...they get really flattened so they done really really rise the trucks much. The riptide cup makes the trucks mostly silent but I’ve also waxed areas of constant for pretty much guaranteed silence. For wheels the setup has Oj Mini Super Juice, 55mm 78a...Bronson G3 beatings in there...to be low, smooth and somewhat all terrain but have the deck look like a typical street deck is so cool to me. To have something close to this in the late 80’s would be a very ugly setup...I can’t think of any ways to make the above setup I’ve described above any smoother or quieter...open to input! I’m old and kinda broken but I am grateful that I can still enjoy the basic “roll for the soul” as I call it. Peace!
Ben you're definitely one of my favorite skater. You're always pushing your limits, your skating is smooth, clean and classy and you're one of the skater who inspire me the most. Keep shredding man !
Woooo. That’s literally what I do when I’m learning something off of something hahah. “Pats the terminator”. Would love to see you review or reminisce old parts. That Duffy part is still amazing and I still watch questionable. Something about shotty footage and just pure progression from those days that is much more appealing to me than the perfect squeaky clean footage from today. People are just too good now. Way to go dude great video
At 31 I've been getting back into skating and the hardest part is the falls from all of the handrails at skateparks. I'll eventually land the trick on the rail, but my palms and wrists take an absolute beating!!! Great video, be safe!
I absolutely LOVE this park. It’s really 90s but it’s well built and so much fun. Ben you should come skate Kamloops skatepark in BC it’s huge and it’s one of the best I’ve been to
Hours of work goes into the first attempt at 6:48 and building up the intestinal fortitude at 7:10, I think that's something all skaters can relate to.
I used to cave man any rail i was afraid of. Id cave man maybe the last foot. The the last 2 foot. Once i could caveman the rail, i knew i could control it, then i start olliing onto them. May not work for everyone, but worhout cavemans, id have NEVER even attempted a rail. They really helped me overcome that fear..
Damn dude I think I needed that. I chickened out on doing a 50 50 on this hubba today down a bank. kinda like a 8 stair with a nice slope. I know I got it but I just kinda wimped out. Gonna go back and do it. There I said it.
I know I am pretty late, but seeing the process of you landing this slide on that rail was amazing! I could relate when I tried my first rock slide on a flatbar (just learned them a few days ago). Anyways, you are a big inspiration for me Ben! Cheers, from Brazil!
7:53 Ben running up and down like a little child. It is good to see you being genuinely happy. I want to see more of that in your videos. After all, that’s what skating is all about, having fun and being happy, right?
Man I love the handrail battle, that moment you slide the whole rail, but don’t land it yet is the best. It’s like savouring the moment before you conquer the handrail. Great job Ben, I’m 32 and I know handrails get scary as you get older. Ballllls buddy. Balllllss. 🎉❤. Thanks for all the videos over the years. Very informative accurate information always.
theres this handrail at a park nearby that I really want to Front board but I'm too scared. i know I can do it but dont have the guts. Now I want to go and do it!
Ben degros can you please do a bones ceramic bearings review.. they are suppose to be 60% lighter. And they aren't steel so it's gotta feel wacky. Maybe that'll help with round rails..
Great💪thanks Ben for this vid that shows how skareboarding goes, getting inspiration from others (duffy) and mentaly focused to push your limits. Now, I want to go back to Duffy's part📺 and some Primus🎶🎸
Wait another 10 years. You will probably shit your pants halfway even thinking about sliding this rail ;) (Not literally) Especially if you manage to get to skate 1-2h per week or less. You will wonder what 10 years do to your sense of balance, time of reaction and thus in confidence to go fast & commit on quick grounds like fine concrete. You will probably even roll on 95 and less durometer wheels to make your ollies stop hurting your knees after a quick hour of skating. Anyway, it will still be fun :)
Dude... I'm pushing 40 myself and I would would give almost anything to even consider doing that rail. Consider yourself fortunate to be in the position to actually try it. Really happy for you. Much respect!
U pretty much Stuck them once u started commiting..the 1st 4 or 5 tries weren't even really attempts. Im someone who's like u as far as handrails n railz in general go..i was always the stair/gaps/ flat ground fliptricks type..at 29 tho n getting back into skating after getting clean n sober, I think I'm gonna have to switch it up to ledges n pyramids n step ups n shit...i have a torn acl that I never got repaired, so 1 janky landing n im fucked for weeks...iv notices tho the paranoia of tweaking my knee makes me alot more commital..bailing n absorbing with the legs n knees is super risky for me atm, but as long as I land on the board so the trucks n board take the impact im usually fine...trying to ward off that O.L.D. is something I never used to have to keep in mind lol...when i was a kid I'd get bummed when gnarly street dudes got older n transition into techy/manny/ledges style..i get it now tho..im not even that old either but for skateboarding, injuries make u feel older than u are..i mean im goofy n I can tell my right ankle is missing something that I can feel in my left ankle. Rolling the right ankle every other week literally changed my ankle structure into something WAY weaker than it used to be...sometimes I can be walking n step into a slight dip in the ground then BAM! Rolled ankle from walking my dog lol.
Nicely done Ben! Right when you said the word commit, I got a flashback of the Santa Cruz Ads I would see in the 00’s that said “Committed”. I think they had grip tape that had the word on it. Anyone else remember that?
You should do a "Best T-shirt" video comparing the best out there. Hopefully adding in the Carhartt K87 short sleeve pocket t, been looking for review on that and your video on the Carhartt pants helped a lot already! Thanks again Ben.
Thrasher "Ben degros my war"

I’m 47. Was trying to hop on an 8 stair rail at a park today. The struggle is real.
You can do it!

i felt how terrifying that was at first! congrats on getting them again
👏💕👍 Nice job Ben
Dude that’s awesome! Glad your still able to do it
Lol I went "Yes" when he landed it.... The feeling when you land something new.
:)
nice board slide dude congrats on overcoming your fear!
Thanks!!
That park looks sick!!!
There is no bad thing if you scared, bad thing is if you have courage and you end in hospital
Wait a second, aren't u the person teaching me how to cut in paint on ceilings
My biggest fear is not getting my front trucks over and body weight on top, once I’m up there I’m not too scared of down rails, it’s just that classic leap of faith
Nothing quite like getting thrown forward and body slamming the ground off of a misplaced truck
Wow, Ben. Your channel grew a lot ever since I watched your videos the last time. Excuse me my absence.
Nice filming 👌 good angles
I have the same problem when spray painting boards! Have to use skate rails if I do.
That was really cool and weird in a way
Damn that park is crusty eh? I skated one like that a few weeks ago. It adds a whole new element of fear sometimes when the surface of a park is kinda chunky I find. Good on ya
Super chunk
I would be scared too.
nailed it.
thanks for this vid; felt you a lot of times
ngl that rail loods scary af
Hell yeah man!
Hell yeah bro getting old sucks it hurts to fall and we're heavier lol
You can do so many tricks I can’t (blunt, frontside flips, backside tails) but I could front/backside boardslide that rail easily lol. Im a 33 yr old former skater who’s very rusty
The further you gap the smaller the rail gets. Don’t get on from the top and you’re good to go as a flat bar.
Nice video
congrats!
I was nervous for you haha
sick video
Would you ever get a dedicated cruiser setup?
We're the exact opposite. I'll hit that rail all day while you do flip tricks down the 5 lol
there is a rail at a park i go to just like this I wanna try it so bad but i chickened out last time , looks about the same size and height
Hell Yeah!
Legend
I’m 45 and I would give it a try 😅 maybe.
😂
Fuck yeah bennyyyy💯♨️

Perfect comment.. I feel the same when I see someone progressing or when I progress by myself.. it's just so nice this learning process
Well that's a big part of skateboarding, to conquer your fears. I'm stoked you made it. Handrails are so much fun but terrifying at the same time. Greetings from Germany!
this made me want to commit to landing boardslides on the flat bar at my local, thanks for the words of wisdom at the end there ben!
As a 20 year old coming back to skating after big injuries to my legs and back, your videos help me a lot to conquer fear. Thanks man
same I broke my leg badly and back at it.
@@steve00alt70 glad to hear it my dude, keep at it, it's easy to get discouraged but so worth it im in pain now but im so glad I skated til I heel flipped yesterday

What's funny is, that i'm way more scared to fs feeble on a flatbar than boardsliding a handrail :D
ya me too, its easier to bail out on a boardslide.... get hung up on that feeble and you bodied for sure
Or bs smith!
Best confidence booster once finally get your board on the obstacle or land back on your board for a brief second. After that you know ITS ON 😎
i always throw my helmet on now when im trying a new rail for the first time im not ashamed

The way he does it over and over again after finally getting it is exactly how I do it, it's so cathartic
my buddy would just caveman boardslide it before he commits on a handrail
That's like way harder than just boardslide it
Shane Oniel does this 😅

Primus....
donald davis Ha! That’s right.... and The Doors Riders on the storm during the slow motion rain rail back lipslide.
The good old days.
I always struggled with getting embarrassed after a few failed attempts. You don’t seem to have this problem at all.
I'll give you a hundred dollars and take you out to benihana's if you slide that 75 foot handrail. I'll give you 600 tries I'll be back next week.
Jason lee! Now I wanna go watch video days

This entire parks look like you would need a Tetanus shot before you skated it.
As well as the concrete looks like it would rip your skin if you were to slide on it
cmon man thats a puny rail
What a great video! That was an emotional ride:)
And I lived!!
7:35 for the boardslide
That handrail seems a bit high even for walking purposes
The ground at that skatepark is so crunchy. Like skating a parking lot
Dropping videos before the living have woke??
I can definitely feel that fear, and skateboarding is just about overcoming it. You are very brave to do it. Love your videos.
Your process is VERY similar to my process... It's the old man process. Solidarity!!
