Separated by the covid 19 pandemic travel restrictions, I have not seen my teenage son for over eighteen months. But that is about to change. Rob and Finn have been secretly conspiring to get Finn out to Western Australia, where we have been sailing. They want it to be a surprise, but it's going to take a small army to pull it off.
Rob recruited his niece Jillian to pick Finn up from the airport in Perth and get him to his connecting flight to Exmouth where Jordan from @ExpeditionDrenched met him and drove him to Tantabiddi near Ningaloo Reef.
Keith from @SailingZatara picked Finn and Jordan up at the jetty and took them back to his boat where Finn was hidden in plain sight.
It was a huge surprise and a very emotional reunion. Not a dry eye in the house.
Well amongst the adults anyway.

BACK STORY
In 1997, after rowing at the Atlanta Olympics, Rob decided to row a tiny seven-metre plywood boat, 2500 miles from Tenerife in the Canary Islands to Barbados in the Caribbean. It took 6 weeks and he and his rowing partner, Phil Stubbs, won the inaugural Atlantic Rowing Race. His first taste of a blue water ocean crossing.
Skip forward to 2014 and, married with three children, Rob and Rachel purchased Javelot a 43 ft Fountaine Pajot catamaran. Armed only with Rob's 3 years of racing P class yachts from the age of 11 to 13, and Rachel's non existent sailing knowledge, we set off to learn the ropes of ocean sailing. We broke stuff, replaced stuff and got to know our boat before heading offshore with the kids, Finn 18, Declan 16 and Ivan 13, in tow. Through trial and error, we have become confident wayfarers, kind of.
Our plan? To sail around the world.
Part of the journey will be retracing Rob’s eldest brother Kerry’s travels at sea. Using Kerry’s original letters from the 1970’s we will re trace his movements from Australia through Indonesia and South East Asia to Cambodia where Kerry’s life was cut short after straying into Cambodian waters in 1978. Kerry and two friends were attacked by a Khmer Rouge gun boat, captured, tortured and executed. www.brothernumberone.co.nz

I’m in a hospital car park with my two year old, waiting for him to wake up and go inside to meet his baby brother who was born yesterday for the first time. This vid got me right in the feels, I’m glad I’m in the car so I can have a good cry!

the sailing community is such a closed-knit family. Such surprises can only be pulled out by another family help. Regardless, in-person can never be replaced by zoom or phone calls...may each day new memories be created and treasured...no one is promised a future so enjoy the moment and rejoice to spend the precious times together. @@michele2145 The boys have been getting on like a house on fire. We have snuck a couple of extra days with Finn because the NZ - Aus bubble closed the day after he arrived. How lucky are we that this happened after he got here. We have our fingers crossed for you.

Thanks Owen. The week has flown by so fast it's almost time to say our goodbyes again. However, this time covid has worked in our favour. The NZ-Aus bubble closing means we get an extra few days with Finn which we wouldn't have got otherwise.

What an emotional video 😂! Marvelous Rob organization and thanks to the help of Zatara crew, spending two weeks (with your rowing champion Finn) to organise the surprise of Finn coming back to the boat 👏👍. And it worked well! The surprise and reaction of Renée was very very emotional, mixing tears and happiness, lovely taking Finn in his arms 😃😂, and Finn being full of happiness, smiling and having sparkles in the eyes being again with is loving mom and family, under the full of happiness eyes of Jack and Finn (of Zatara) 😇🥰. Then meeting stunned Declan and Ivan, comparing the size of his rising up brothers, kidding and so on 😃… A mesmerizing scene of love and happiness I like very much; the first time I saw this video I was nervous seeing the preparations, then being so really happy that I got some tears in the eyes. Since, I enjoyed seeing this video many time. As for the crushing and love affairs of Jack, Declan and Finn Whitaker. Thank you very much for posting this great video!
I have not (yet) find a video of your encounter with the Zatara crew, as I follow and appreciate for only alas a few months, but I was very happy with them. And I suppose that you have some strong relationships with them, and I guess that the teens of the two families enjoyed meeting and playing together?
