Beautiful, fascinating! I like it! Great filming, great shooting, good looking birds! The clothings, the guns, the scenery, the camaraderie, the rain!! So different than up here! Cheers!
American Viewer here, honestly love the different takes on hunting as a whole where ever you go. Maybe once I’m older and have the cash to travel I could get to try my hand hunting abroad in the different traditional styles. Also I enjoy seeing the fancier double barrel guns instead of the relatively common semi autos and pumps that make up the fields and woods around me.
Also American viewer here - born & grew up in the south of England - I too prefer shooting my Beretta S 686 Special over-under on quail hunts. It never jams!
I am also American, but I have done British pheasant shoots. I really wouldn’t call it hunting though, they are farm raised birds released to shoot at. Hardly reaches any definition of a hunt. I still love it, and will do it again.
@@Stonehorn Well, Pheasants in my area are 90 percent released hunts as well. Weather that be state land through draws or paid places. But still different to see their take at it.
Johnny, great meeting you today at Browning San Antonio, TX. My uncle was no help in identifying the video I shared with him, but it was this one, covering your day in the Savernake. Enjoy your time in Texas and thank you for producing these informative videos.
Lovely to meet you too. Definitely didn’t spend enough time here for sure and can’t wait to come back. The Savernake is one of my favourite places in the world.
I honestly couldn't have enjoyed that more to an old shooter like me it's lovely to see old traditions kept alive with a nod to the future ie those charming youngsters I would say keep the tie though thanks for a most enjoyable post regards and stay safe and well
Savernake, such great history. Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic et al, lets not forget a medieval hunting forest for historians and legends alike xx
Can honestly say I completely agree with the modernization of the things that are frowned upon to closer align with what you were talking about. Cheers from Canada.
Great video as always, question for Johnny, have you ever done a video on how to clean a gun properly after a heavy days rain? We all know how to clean after a normal day in the field or the Clay's but often not sure what extra things to do after a fine soaking. What did you do with your gun after this shoot?
Now that looks like a good days shooting. None of this 800 plus bag, where the birds are just targets. My kind of shoot, which reminded me of my time on the rough shoots at Driffield and Leconfield back in the 90’s
Small walk one stand days are the future of driven shooting in my opinion and are some of the best days you can have if we are to show shooting in a better light we need to be shooting smaller days and make shooting more accessible to the average man. I’m glad someone else thinks wiltshire is gods country after 10 years here after moving from Yorkshire I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else it’s stunning around Marlborough we’ve some lovely shoots around here.
I learned from day one in hunting with my father and his friends was to never kill anything unless you plan on eating it (unless obvious reasons necessitate it). Always ask permissionn from farmers and respect their property.
Another brilliant video as always, iPhone or not. Some cracking birds and looks like you shot really well. Keep up the great work, your videos have been really inspiring this past season 👌🏻👌🏻
This is totally different than what I'm used to in the States. It looks like a lot of fun with a lot of friends. Thanks for enlightening me as to how you hunt in the UK.
Yes and no. In my humble opinion, it is hunting. I’m sure there’s a lot of behind the scenes work that goes on to make this happen. The game keeper’s job to maintain a population would really be interesting. It’s quite different and looks like a great experience.
@@Twistedoff2 they are literally birds raised in pens and released to shoot. That isn’t hunting, it’s game shooting. Still a wonderful outdoor sport, but it isn’t hunting in any way
Interesting to see film of pheasants coming at the shooter or flying by to the side and taking shots almost as if they were ducks. I’ve only seen them exploding into the air in front of me or a dog and flying straight away.
I thought this was August 1st, 2022, and was lije "wait a minute..." then remembered that y'all actually follow logic in how you represent your dates over there!

Pheasants would eat the newly planted corn in my great grandfather's farm ruining his crop. They were illegal to shoot. When the cops found out he was shooting them they paid him a visit and said he would be fined if he kept shooting them. They also said, if the birds caused any loss they would reimburse him. He stopped shooting them and they ruined his crop. He went in and explained what happened. The man went into the back and came out and dropped a bag of corn on the counter and said "there you go". Needless to say that didn't go over well with a man who had left home at 16 to find his way in the world. Still from that day forward my great grandfather never shot another Pheasant... but he did shoot and eat a lot of what he called "dark chicken". And his corn came back. Haha that's one of my dad's favorite stories. He named me after my great grandfather.
@@tgsoutdoors I've tried technical ski socks before but they just don't suit the purpose as well. A lot of people don't understand that classic clothes come from a utilitarian need and have been refined over a very long time.

As a hunter here in the USA , it’s fascinating watching the approach to hunting in the UK and how different the traditions are. Great content .. quick question out of complete ignorance; why wearing dress shirts and ties for a hunt out in the woods .. we wear specially made camouflaged clothes .. thank you for the great content.
Our grandfathers wore ties hunting... They dressed decent for most of the hunting they did. I started wearing plaids and woolens again for deer. Drab canvas for quail and dove. I guess the ducks and turkeys are about all I really camo up for anymore. I love seeing all this stunning English woolens and tweeds and how perfectly it blends in with and graces the English countryside. They become brushstrokes on the land and the hunting is more beautiful for it. It shows the respect they still have for the game and tradition and wonderful aesthetic. I wish more did it like this here in Georgia.
I am just now learning about British hunting and the commonalities and differences between it and the U.S but over here in the southern U.S it is uncommon to not eat what you shoot. for people to go hunt and not eat the thing they shot is not only very odd but very unsportsmanlike. hunters hunt to eat, so you eat what you shoot or you don't shoot it at all.
@@burmacondafrom what I understand for a long time it wasn't uncommon for British folks to shoot game and just leave it. I can't remember but he actually talked about that in a different video. Nothing quite like pruning trees 30 grams at a time....I also vastly prefer being in the woods than not - you don't have time to over-think things and you look like less of a tool when you miss...
Every single shoot that has kept beaters away from guns has been a disappointment for me regardless of the quality of birds. But then I wouldn't dream of turning up for a shoot day without a slab of beer and a slab of full fat coke for the beaters at lunch time. Without them there is no driven day. In the same vein I always make a point of thanking the beaters at the end of the day. I've done enough of both beating and standing to know a few words can be the difference between beaters thinking guns are dicks and beaters going the extra mile in the rain or the brambles.
Johnny, how tall are you?? I never see anyone taller than you in your videos. Love the videos keep them coming. I enjoy them here in southern California.
Hunting laws are so weird in UK... By the way, a dozen overdressed lord-like guys paying good money for syndicate hunting seems so strange for us in the southern Balkans...
I kept wondering what happens to all of the birds you shoot. Seemed like a lot to take home but perhaps not. I’m just not familiar enough (northeastern US) with shoots of this kind and volume. Must be good eating, not like the chemical experiments we pick up at the US supermarkets. Best Regards and thanks for sharing. Loved the RIZZINI piece you did.
I'd love to see you do what I think you'd call "a walk up/ rough shoot-" No tea party; Not relying on beaters; Walking through the countryside, watching the dogs work; Sussing out the game in it's natural habitat; Shooting one or two birds flushing after a point; Picking up and appreciating the bird you just took before moving on to the next shot.
