Back in March 2024 I saw the first of these bottles hitting store shelves here in Texas. Both were aged stated 18 years old, but it was their above average abv’s that really caught my eye.
The Bruichladdich “Re/Define” 18 (according to the bottle) is created to showcase their belief “That Islay whisky should have a sense of place, of terroir that speaks of the land. The barley and water from which it was made, and the human soul that gave it life. This ultra-high provenance single malt whisky is that vision realized.” After the 18 years of maturation in mostly ex-bourbon casks - with a small number of wine casks - it was bottled in a 750ml at 100 proof and retails between $160-$180.
The Port Charlotte 18 is the oldest expression of Port Charlotte Islay Single Malt to date. “Limited to 6,000 bottles, its rich peaty profile celebrates authenticity, provenance, and community. Staying true to the classic vibrancy of the heavily-peated (40PPM) Port Charlotte spirit, this 18-Year-Old expression has been profoundly influenced by its cask maturation profile and the passing of time, resulting in a complex and unforgettable single malt.” It was distilled in 2004 from 100% Scottish mainland barley, and 74% of it was matured in refill sherry casks, and the remaining 26% was in refill French oak wine casks. It came in a 700ml bottle and retails between $190-$220.
As always, thank you for being Patrons! I hope you enjoyed this review, and please remember to drink responsibly. Cheers!

Love both of these!! The Port Charlotte edges out the Bruichladdich for me. But they are both very nice. I happily have backups for each of these delicious single malts! Terrific video! Thanks so much!

Just picked up the B 18 at total wine for $166 and also grabbed a 1792 full proof for about $50.
Going to wait until fall to get into both as I’m taking a break from drinking this summer.
I’m super excited about the B18.
It’s sitting next to my Oban 18 and Knob Hill 18.
Sitting there just looking at me 😂
    Fall can’t come soon enough.
    Thanks for the video, Chris!

I recall years ago, you kept a small cup of coffee beans to help when nosing spirits. That and the water seemed to work well for you. Are there other products out there in the market that can help a guy with nosing?

25 years ago, I began with a big wine nosing kit - which helped a lot. I still use the coffee beans when I’m nosing a lot of spirits back to back - just to reset my nose along the way. Thanks for being a longtime viewer and cheers!

My first couple drams of the B 18 were “meh”….closed off, too simple…but it came alive after that. It’s very nice. So is the PC 18. But the problem with both is the price. Too expensive for what I get. These would be a “buy” for me at $125, but 180-220…no way.

Quite a few reviews seem to indicate a little disappointment in the Bruichladdich 18. The Port Charlotte version seems to be the way to go.

Not for me and my friends, but give it a try. Cheers!

I've done this sbs comparison as well. Guess i'm in the minority because the Re-Define 18 is phenomenal.
