I grew up in Rochester. Nobody I knew ever went to Nic's for lunch or dinner. It was strictly a place you'd go late at night after a night drinking on the town. We used to cringe at people that would go there sober! A lot of high school and college kids liked going there at night so they could mix with the crazy street life - drug dealers, pimps and street walkers. Sounds crazy, but that's the way it was back in the 1980s. I had it once and was underwhelmed, but it certainly hit the spot after a night of drinking, especially with hot sauce. A plate with white hots is an even better order, just because white hots are unique to the area. A white hot (sometimes called a pork hot - but they're not always all-pork, and red hots sometimes are... ) is basically just a hotdog, but a slightly different formulation and a distinct flavor. The really distinctive thing about a garbage plate is the "hot sauce" which is usually not very spicy, but it's always hot in temperature. Every place that serves burgers and hotdogs has their own hot sauce. The exact spices vary, but the closely-guarded recipes often include cinnamon, allspice, cloves, etc, not just chili powder, cumin and the more common chili spices. It's also common to put that sauce on a hot dog or burger in a bun, not just on a garbage plate. Of course, lots of places have a tradition of a chili-like sauce on a hotdog, but the hot sauce in Rochester does have a specific characteristic vibe. Although it's theoretically optional, I'm not sure you could really call something a Garbage Plate without the hot sauce on top, and I personally would never skip the raw onions and mustard either. I'm not sure you NEED to mix everything together, but it does just happen organically, and I do think that's part of the appeal. I've seen some folks chop everything up and actively stir it into a gooey mess, and I'm sorry, but that is NOT the way. I find it hilarious that most places also give you bread - Italian bread at Nick Tahou's, sometimes boring white bread, or a dinner roll at other places - as if you needed extra carbs. As you figured-out, the structure is generally hotdogs or burgers (but some places like this offer sausage or fried fish or chicken tenders) piled on top of your choice of two: mac salad, beans, home fries, french fries, and some places offer tots. Almost everyone gets some kind of potato, and chooses between beans and mac salad. I suppose they'd let you get two kinds of potatoes, or beans and mac, with no potatoes, but that's not standard protocol. Home fries and either beans or mac salad is the classic order. You generally have to choose: I can't think of anywhere that puts all options on the plate. BTW, Nick Tahou trademarked the term "Garbage Plate" and they guard it, as you legally have to protect a trademark. If you don't prevent others from using your trademark, you lose that protection! As a result, almost anywhere in the greater Rochester area that serves hotdogs and burgers will offer a "plate" on the menu, but it pointedly will NOT be called a "Garbage Plate," So you end up with Dumpster plates, Trash plates, Great Plates, or just "plates." It's understood that anything called a plate will follow the standard formula. I personally think that Nick Tahou makes a solid example, but as a few other commenters have noted, Dogtown, on Monroe Ave is a little more meticulous about their ingredients and preparation. Some of the local burger/dog chains do a good job too, like Tom Wahl's or Bill Gray's or Schaller's. But lots of local pubs, diners, etc make them, and everyone has a favorite... Nick Tahou is no longer open late at night - it was a bit of a scene there after bars closed! But they're really most appealing after a night of drinking, and one of the few options at that time is Mark's on Monroe Ave. (RIP Gitsi's) A plate always tastes a little better at 2:30 am... I know you don't drink, so you probably won't do that, but if you do find yourself back in Rochester, you should indeed check out Dogtown, for any of their creative hot dogs - but I also recommend just getting a grilled white hot with hot sauce, mustard and raw onion, on a bun. It's a little different than other hot dogs.
They use Zweigle’s hot dogs that’s why they are so good! And yessss RIP Gitsi’s!!!!!! And Marks is so mediocre now since the pandemic😢. Grilled whites are everything highly recommend when gets his side of beans to get a white hot instead of red!
Never made it there, but I’m reminded of Country Sweet Chicken and Ribs. Best chicken wings ever back in the day. I wonder if it’s still the same today.
The garbage plate actually goes back to the Great Depression when workers needed something cheap and filling, because it was often their only meal of the day. Check out some of the RUclips videos that explore some of the foods from that era, it’s fascinating how many have either become regional specialties or are even making a comeback, like Hoover stew.
Came here from your Buffalo video eventhough I live in Rochester. Once again great video the building once was a train station. If you ever come back try a white hot ( all pork hot dog not a bratwurst) They are uniqe to Rochester and my wife's favorite. In my opinion it is the beef hot sauce that makes the dish. Although for me personally this dish goes down a lot better with a tummy full of booze. If you are not a drinker it is still good. Anyway glad you guys came and enjoyed it. If you come back try the Genny Brew house food and beer is good and a great view of a waterfall.
My favorite plate during my time in Rochester was from Dogtown (great selection of hot dogs too) . Henrietta Hots & Fairport Hots have great plates too!
This is still the best plate in Rochester. I sat w/ Nick once 30 yrs ago and he told me: 'When I married my wife, she thought I was a Greek God. Now she thinks I'm a god damn Greek".
I'm from Rochester and I have to tell you at 1:30-2 in the morning after being out for the night, nothing tastes better than a Garbage plate with extra meat sauce.
Great vid! I'm Rochester through and through. Glad to see you made it out unscathed. Rochester lately is falling apart. With that said, that W. Main location is the original for a plate in town. I used to go to school (Wilson), get food orders from teachers, head to that Tahou's to get the food, bring it back and pass it around to the staff. That made senior year pretty easy for me lol.
My daughter attends U of R and I often visit Nick Tahou's when in town. I never got the friendly treatment there; I should also whip out a camera for better service.
It’s definitely a go to for closing out a night of bar hoping. Where I grew up, about an hour east of Rochester, when the bars closed we’d hit up the local hot plate restaurant. Was fun back in the day
Those Zweigle hotdogs are more plump than what you’re used to in the Tri state area. I’ve made my own garbage plate with Sabretts and it’s really good.
Love me a plate once in awhile ! I order mine cheeseburger , all home fries , extra onion , then load it up with Frank's Red Hot . That's perfection ! Glad you got to try one . There are a LOT of options for a good plate . Most pizza places offer some variety of one . Many offer other meats and types of potato ( fries , tater tots ) .
I’m from Rochester and there is nothing better after a night out. Cheeseburger, Mac and home fries with everything on it was always my go to. People commenting that have never had one- hold your tongue.

As a Rochester native, I've been to Nick Tahou's once and never again. Decent enough, but very greasy. It's basically our version of the heart attack grill. If you're still there, or next time you go, try Dumpling House.
Really good assessment of our most popular dish. It is a great texture of different spices and food temperatures. Personally I order the white hots (we call the Zweigle version of Hot Dogs "Hots") with french fries/tater tots and baked beans/coleslaw at Bill Gray's. Yes, it is supposed to be a "poor's man" or "depression" food, where you put together your leftovers. I believe the dish started because of the great depression. Thank you for visiting our city!
Living in Rochester, had my fair share of these. For all of you who have not had it and say it looks unappealing, try it and update your comment. Also, congratulations for not getting shot. I guess it was the chilly weather that saved you.
There were a lot of years when rochester had the highest per capita murder rate in New York State. Certain parts of that city are very very dangerous.@@axe2grind244
I was born in Rochester and I first learned of the garbage plate from Nick’s. 60 years later…Still the same! People come home to Rochester and always stop at Nick’s at some point. It’s the same at noon as 2am. A Historic place!
one more thing I gotta tell you about Rochester food is try the new Syrian places like Master Falafel and Falafel Aleppo the food is amazing and very good prices get yourself a mixed grill plate with hummus and extra bread
Lived in Rochester for a few years. My bf's frat bros all loved Nick Tahou's, especially the garbage plate....and that was in the early 80s. 😃 I vastly preferred Sal's birds, also iconic with college kids back then.
First time viewing your channel. Might have popped up due to Rochester connection. I enjoy a good plate like most in the area, and agree with your commenters, it is enjoyed after tossing back a few, a late night dish. But I still enjoy them. Basically picnic food , a little mixed together! And Abbots Custard, would be a good choice!
You have to go to Nick's after a night of drinking and get a 2 cheeseburger plate with extra hot sauce. As for alternatives, Mark's and Gitsis on Monroe Ave were second best in my day. I imagine they're no longer around since it's been 30 years since I left.
Steve T's on Lyell Avenue by the 390 has a good one. Steve was Nick Tahou's nephew and Steve's sister still runs it. I like the cheeseburger plate with beans and macaroni salad and everything on it. Sauce, onions and mustard.
I'm glad you included Tina in the review. She really added to your description, still remaining mysterious to your viewers. You should tease her reveal in some upcoming show. We long to see her face.
Lived in Rochester my whole life, you need franks red hot, and I personally put ketchup on mine. The order would be “Cheeseburger, Mac salad, home fry, everything.” The Meat Sauce is a western New York thing as well. I prefer Stevie Ts on Lyell Ave, used to be Tahoes but something happened within the family I believe. A lot of the places that used to be around at the Garbage plate peak during the early 2000s have disappeared unfortunately. Also the hot dogs are Zweigles which are a Rochester made hot dog. I don’t personally like the pop opens but they are super popular around here.
The cold beans remind me of the cold sweet beans you sometimes get in Korean restaurants on the side that contrast well with the hot bulgogi or whatever dish your eating
Haha I work directly across the street, sketchy ass area, I’m always looking out the window to make sure my car is still there 🤣 it’s also sketchy in Nicks anytime after sun goes down. The original tho!
For those out of town part of the appeal is that you go there after drinking with your crew. You are somewhere else drinking, watching the game, darts, whatever and then someone in your crew will ask , “plates?” And then it’s on, you can’t say no. To be honest you can’t judge the plate without the pregame. Getting a plate late at night is just the cherry on top of the sundae after hanging out with your crew, that’s the appeal and not its culinary value.
Born and raised in Rochester. It’s definitely something you eat after a night out. There are variations of the plate that I’d eat for a regular dinner.
This looks like comfort food to me. Who doesn't like 2 carbs on one plate 😅 It's kind of the day after Thanksgiving where leftovers are eaten altogether. They do not look as fresh as the day before, but to me, the leftovers always taste better from the day before. I guess I often make my own version. It's called "eat what's in the fridge." I have had many strange combinations that always taste great. Or I turn it into a casserole or stew/soup.
This reminds of my long deceased Aunt made a meal called “Dutch Mess”. A combination of lettuce, mashed potatoes, bacon, vinegar and a few other items. It looked like garbage but tasted delicious. It’s been almost 50 years since I’ve eaten it. Makes me want to search for the recipe and make it.
Welcome to the ROC my brother! There's a lot more than just garbage plates in the city. We have a ton of history. A ton of famous people in the MT Hope Cemetery! Winter is a tough time to visit. When I was younger they just always had a heap of taters on the counter. There was literally a stain from the grease on the wall. Now days it's all stainless steel, but in the 90's it was kinda dodgey
Tina added a lot to the review. You should have her in more videos. I have had garbage plates from Rochester and they are interesting, like you said. Not mind blowing but something else.
Rochester native here. I’m so craving a plate right now! My go to is Fairport or Empire Hots. I’ll definitely try Dog Town. I dislike Bill Gray’s hot sauce as I find it too sweet. Definitely don’t like Charlie’s Mac salad. Key to a great meat sauce is the cinnamon added. Getting a cheeseburger plate, a must try add on is fried egg!!!
the BEST Rochester only food IMO are the apple fritters and any fried cake donut at Ridge Donuts- serious, you don't want to miss it! Get the cheesecake cookie sandwiches at Cheesy Eddies. If you're headed over to Buffalo next you MUST go to Southern Junction for the best BBQ (way better than Dinosaur, James Beard runner up chef) and Gabriel's Gate for the best Buffalo Chicken Wings.
Love the Rochester Garbage plates! Next on your list should be traveling to Craylee’s on Bleecker St in Utica and try their Giambotta breakfast plate which is scrambled eggs with Italian sausage, potato, Utica greens, onions, sweet & hot Italian peppers topped with melted mozzarella! It’s the best breakfast on the face of the earth!
I hope you had a chance to eat a Zweigle’s hot dog on its own. Yes, every different hamburger/hot joint in the area has its own name for it, but if you still a Rochesterian you going to get a “plate” they know. Tom Wahl’s, Bill Gray’s and Charlie Reidel’s (my fave) are worth a visit. And listen to this, please: if you get a chance to try Abbot’s Frozen Custard (chocolate almond flavor) it will change your goddam life. Hoping for more Roch/Buffalo/ Syracuse episodes. Wings and hot dogs are the specialty.
agree about the chocolate almond , have you tried any of the Syrian or Turkish restaurants it's all I want to eat lately, As Evi and Master Falafel are my favorites
The man seen at the register is actually Nick the owner. The restaurant is clean, simple and sanitary. Everything is in the open and can be seen being prepared. This is not fine dining but actually "ordinary" food consistent each time you eat it. Nick is on the premises most of the time and is friendly towards customers. Nick Tahou's is a Rochester institution copied but never equal to the original " Garbage Plate".
I worked for a company based in Rochester and I had to work out of that office frequently. I'm from California and some of my work mates introduced me to the garbage plate. Best hangover cure on the planet. There's a place in Pittsburgh that also has a version, it's really old and I can't remember the name. If anybody knows the place in Pittsburgh, please leave a comment.

It is!
Def is!
Sals Birdland
Sal's Birdland is better than CS in my opinion, but both are great.
Once upon a time they used to serve them at The Rochester Rhino's Soccer ⚽ Games a Frontier Field, BEST EVER! The good ole days!
That's the best part of scarfing a dish like this, all the textures and flavors melding together 😮
Your close to my hometown Syracuse,Ny.
Interesting and that makes sense! So it was very similar in concept to the Korean budae jigae (army stew) example I mentioned
@ exactly, which is why the “original” version features what is even today relatively cheap and filling ingredients.
Was the crowd orderly?
That makes sense.
LOL.
It looks like one of those plates which is really great value and you devour on a cold day. And that to me is amazing!
Alex is not only not friendly, he's unfriendly. too bad, this place should be way more crowded even in a part of town with challenges
It’s definitely a go to for closing out a night of bar hoping. Where I grew up, about an hour east of Rochester, when the bars closed we’d hit up the local hot plate restaurant. Was fun back in the day
Rochester UA Brrrrrr . So like a hole in the wall locals joint . You can pick them man keep it up UA !! You Rock 🎸
you were/are here? Dang! Glad you dropped by, wish you could have tried one of our legit local steak places
Got a rec?
@@uaeatsI do! Black and Blue Steak in pittsford!
I do….skip Rochester entirely and go to Lucia in Buffalo. It’s the best steak place outside NYC in the state without question. It’s life changing.
@@uaeats Definitely want to see a review of max's chophouse - - total hole in the wall tiny bar vibe with a mean steak and good mac 'n cheese
I like that they give a lot of food for the money. 👍😎👍
Yeah! It was actually a huge portion. Two people can probably share one
growing up in rochester and still living here these plates are the best. every town has there own, its the meat sauce that makes it.
Those Zweigle hotdogs are more plump than what you’re used to in the Tri state area. I’ve made my own garbage plate with Sabretts and it’s really good.
Dude try Vern’s, Carnegie cellars, Good Luck, Lenore’s, Max Chophouse. Let me know if you need any Rochester recs. Love your vids
We have something here in MN called the Hobo. It’s a smokehouse restaurant that serves smoked/grilled meats with all the carbs.
If you ever make it out to Hawaii, that’s how we eat a lot of our plate lunches. All the flavors mixed together are indescribable.
Here in Pa. We call this refrigerator soup and you never know what flavor is next but it always😊 good and filling
I’m from Rochester and there is nothing better after a night out. Cheeseburger, Mac and home fries with everything on it was always my go to. People commenting that have never had one- hold your tongue.
Drunk munchies!
100% eat one there, get a plate to go for breakfast.
@@sjd7188 Probably right up there with morning after cold all meats pizza👍
@ cold pizza is a distant second place. Both are like sex , even when it’s bad it’s still good …
Agree!
There's a diner-styled restaurant in Richmond, Va., that offers a "Rochester garbage plate." Now I know where that came from!
must be hot w ketchup or mustard
I used to live in Richmond and never crossed paths with this. If you don't mind me asking, where is it?
@@Bunbury42 River City Diner. Used to be one on Parham near Rt. 1, but that's no longer there. There's one on Huguenot Rd., going west just before you get to Robious Rd. It's in the "The Shoppes at Belgrade" shopping center. It's been a while since I've been there, so I can't tell you how things are there now.
@@rogerrosen2323 I've had it once. The only thing I recall is there being too much cheese. This has now been years ago, so I can't comment on the current situation.
@@Bunbury42 he said rochester ny
😂😂😂😂 was thinking the same!!
😆 no one goes to Nick's so no violence there
Get shot? It’s Rochester, not Baltimore. Relax.
There were a lot of years when rochester had the highest per capita murder rate in New York State. Certain parts of that city are very very dangerous.@@axe2grind244
Agree! Garbage plates are awesome at any time of the day😊😊😊
I was born in Rochester and I first learned of the garbage plate from Nick’s. 60 years later…Still the same! People come home to Rochester and always stop at Nick’s at some point. It’s the same at noon as 2am. A Historic place!
This one of my favorite episodes, Tina's describing the food and UA'S just agreeing with her. She's much better at this
Nobody goes to nicks for 5 star food 😂we all know why we came, it's for good stuff at 1am that's gonna hit the spot.
one more thing I gotta tell you about Rochester food is try the new Syrian places like Master Falafel and Falafel Aleppo the food is amazing and very good prices get yourself a mixed grill plate with hummus and extra bread
Master falafel is soooo good! The one on Monroe is 👍👍☺️
Lived in Rochester for a few years.
When I was in college the Nick Tahou's Garbage Plate was a right of passage. While it tasted good, I couldn't have it more than one time per year.
The guy was hilarious.
Crazy to see home on here !!! Enjoy friend !
Bill Gray's plate with the double-burger is my favorite.
You have to go to Nick's after a night of drinking and get a 2 cheeseburger plate with extra hot sauce. As for alternatives, Mark's and Gitsis on Monroe Ave were second best in my day. I imagine they're no longer around since it's been 30 years since I left.
Did you just dump on Zweigle's Hots? Try one on it's own, and grab a white hot too at Don's Original in Sea Breeze.
Great vid! As others have said, it is definitely a late night post drinking dish....and probably an OCD persons living nightmare. 🙂
Steve T's on Lyell Avenue by the 390 has a good one. Steve was Nick Tahou's nephew and Steve's sister still runs it. I like the cheeseburger plate with beans and macaroni salad and everything on it. Sauce, onions and mustard.
The best one is from Dogtown on Monroe. Can’t believe you were here in Rochester, that’s awesome. Hope you enjoy
I love a simple menu... I don't want to do an hour of research for the cheesecake factory
I'm glad you included Tina in the review. She really added to your description, still remaining mysterious to your viewers. You should tease her reveal in some upcoming show. We long to see her face.
What? Her face has been in videos. Couldn’t tell ya which one but I know what she looks like
Oh yeah, I remember. I think it's when they were in England.@@niki420yuh
Doesn't look like something I'd eat sober.
It’s really good, but the best part is you can usually order these at like 1AM hammered 😂
I've had it many times, but I was never sober
Glad you came anf enjoyed our delicious Rochester Classic
Lived in Rochester my whole life, you need franks red hot, and I personally put ketchup on mine. The order would be “Cheeseburger, Mac salad, home fry, everything.” The Meat Sauce is a western New York thing as well. I prefer Stevie Ts on Lyell Ave, used to be Tahoes but something happened within the family I believe. A lot of the places that used to be around at the Garbage plate peak during the early 2000s have disappeared unfortunately. Also the hot dogs are Zweigles which are a Rochester made hot dog. I don’t personally like the pop opens but they are super popular around here.
hahahaha the cook had great character! 🤣
The cold beans remind me of the cold sweet beans you sometimes get in Korean restaurants on the side that contrast well with the hot bulgogi or whatever dish your eating
Hey I'm new to the channel and I'm enjoy it very much.
Well said
You talk to your gurl in a strange way. 😂
A good and entertaining video as always. I think you took another bullet for us The hotdog concoction looks interesting, but I wouldn't go there
Miss watching you hurt my home heart. Awesome!! I make them at home!!😊
Born and raised in Rochester. It’s definitely something you eat after a night out. There are variations of the plate that I’d eat for a regular dinner.
This looks like comfort food to me. Who doesn't like 2 carbs on one plate 😅
It's kind of the day after Thanksgiving where leftovers are eaten altogether. They do not look as fresh as the day before, but to me, the leftovers always taste better from the day before.
I guess I often make my own version. It's called "eat what's in the fridge." I have had many strange combinations that always taste great. Or I turn it into a casserole or stew/soup.
Love that you’re always sporting your eagles gear.
I'm a ride or die fan!
It’s the best breakfast on the face of the earth!
i know that America is fully of these type of stories but I'm amazed that this is a thing.
Had a bunch in college when Nick Tahou's opened a restaurant in Oswego in 1995. Perfect munchie/hangover food.
I believe the building was the Lehigh Valley Railroad Station , went there when visiting my son in 2005 or so as he was student at RIT
The best meat sauce is cooking your own ground beef and blending it with locally made sauce, Freddys Disrespectful Sauce.
