Siskel & Ebert: Worst Of 1995 - Judge Dredd, Showgirls, Waterworld, Tank Girl, Jury Duty, Jade

- In this episode, Siskel and Ebert talk about the worst films of 1995. These films include: The Scarlet Letter, Judge Dredd, Vampire in Brooklyn, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Showgirls, Waterworld, Tank Girl, Money Train, The Jerky Boys, Jury Duty, Mr. Payback and Jade.
12:40 Eddie Murphy by this point was an out of touch big star who surrounded himself with his family and yes-men. So his movies got a lot worse.
Oddly enough Murpy did precisely what Ebert suggested when he played the supporting role in Bowfinger, but then dove right back in to bad comedy.
These dudes are so articulate, bombastic with rapid fire commentary that ya gotta luv this stuff!
This made my day. "My first problem is with her face." No one would get away with that honesty today. These two legends are just amazing. Love these posts. Thank you!
Yes they would, cause he was talking about the make-up not her actual face.
Elizabeth Berkeley looks more like a schoolteacher than a stripper, and at that the sort of teacher who menaces the slackers in the classroom. That would have been a better direction for her career in extensions of Saved by the Bell.
... I know that Westerns were out of vogue at the time, but Stallone might have fared well in one. To be sure, they allow little room for special effects, and the bad guys usually end up badly.
@@basquat76 nah, he'd still get canceled for it today.
@@serious22 What does that even mean cancelled? Who's been cancelled actually?

Only found this channel a few days ago and my god, it’s awesome! Living in Australia we didn’t have Siskel and Ebert. We did have a similar pair of reviewers though who were also fantastic but these guys are brilliant! Always wanted to see their shows and this is a great channel to catch up.
Must admit I miss these old days of cinema. Funny to see how some of these films we now enjoy yet the consensus was they were trash!
Congratulations on the great channel and keep up the great work!
The Movie Show with Margaret And David xp
Miss these guys.
Nice, intelligent discourse.
Of course, we all disagree, doesn't mean we can't gave interesting conversations.
Nice! I love the "worst of" episodes!
So do I! 😁
You should check out some of Ebert's "worst of" compilation books. His written reviews on crappy movies are pretty damn funny.
RIP Jason David Frank, the White Ranger.
This episode is on a couple of the other Siskel and Ebert channels, but I always appreciate the rendering and sound quality of yours.
Which matters! 😊
"..she just doesn't look good. I'm talking about her face." hahaha cold. Her face is sexy IMO.
He was talking about the makeup, which was terrible in that film. Maybe it was the lighting too.
All I saw her as was Jesse Spano, proto-SJW
He was talking about the make-up. They all looked like fucking clowns.
I want to know how did Cutthroat Island not make the worst of 1995?
Stallone does have talent Gene was right.
“Good people like John Landis…”
Tell that to the three people he got killed.
He can't, they're dead.
Acquitted.
@@gspendlove which he of course shouldn’t have been.

“I AM THE LAW!”
I remember seeing a few of those turkeys in theatre and this episode. Always loved the show. Thanks for the upload.
I wasted $25 at blockbuster on waterworld first for forgetting to return it then for not rewinding it. What made it worse I never watched it till many years later and then found out how much money I had wasted 😂
Thank you for uploading!
Here is my list of the worst movies of 1995
10). A Kid in King Arthur's Court - Not Fun Movie for Kids
9). National Lampoon's Senior Trip - Unfunny Comedy
8). The Tie That Binds - Unfunny Comedy
7). Mr. Payback - Bad Career Move Movie - Billy Warlock
6). Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers - Sequel that Ruined the Series
5). Theodore Rex - Big Star in a Bad Movie - Whoopi Goldberg
4). Top Dog - Bad Career Move Movie - Chuck Norris
3). Vampire in Brooklyn - Big Star in a bad movie - Eddie Murphy
2). Problem Child 3: Junior in Love - Sequel that Ruined the Series
The Worst Movie of 1995
1). Jury Duty - Unfunny Comedy
Man, I love the intro theme 😍
I am proud to state that I saw none of these turkey's and remember few of them.
1995 was a golden year for bad movie fans. So. Many. Standouts.
4:35 OMG Between this and his comments on Kirstie Alley in the "It Takes Two" episode, Siskel seems kind of catty.
Jade was not great, but far from the worst, I still consider William Friedkin one of the greats.
I think it was because that Caruso had left NYPD Blue so people couldn't wait to tear apart anything he did
May Friedkin rest in peace.
One of my favorite things about Showgirls is how the main character has no arc. She learns nothing and doesn't change. Just a small part of the baffling script choices that makes it more enjoyable than your average bad movie.
Her backstory should have been the movie. She starts dabbling into drugs, gets into prostitution, and then things go sideways for her so she has to go to Vegas to leave her troubles behind her.
Main character has no arc, just like a porno apparently.
Forgot who said it but they called this the era of the soundtrack outselling/outliving the movie. Tank Girl is a good example.
Escape From L.A. has an amazing soundtrack...trash movie, great soundtrack.
Batman Forever had Nick Cave, The Offspring and Massive Attack
@@JeroenZM Don't forget the big hits, "Kiss from A Rose" from Seal and "Hold Me, Thrill Me" from U2, which a lot of non-U2 fans consider their best song. Also had some hidden gems like "Nobody Lives Without Love" by Eddi Reader.
I’m glad Money Train eventually got a well-needed improvement in its remake Money Plane.
You wanna bet on a dude f***in an alligator?
Dredd 2012 was MADNESS I LOVED IT.........
@Stephen Seagull Dredd (2012) was almost perfect! ..agree about Robocop though
Will the 1995/96 "Memo to the Academy " video going to be available eventually?
"Tank Girl" was a comic book long before it became a movie. And fans of the comic *HATED* the movie. I can't blame them, it was completely unfaithful to the comic beyond the basic premise.
"Kids these days are too smart, even the kids with IQs of 50 are too smart for Pauly Shore". Unfortunately not. As someone who grew up in the 1990's we kept watching his awful movies. I cannot explain why.
Adam Sandler made his millions off of 90s kids.
Guilty..I enjoyed Waterworld and Dredd
The final 30 seconds - back when the Oscars were important - seems like a different world now.
"The kids these days are just too smart! Even the ones with IQs of 50 are too smart for Pauly Shore! What do you say?"
*beat*
*sotto voice* "Right, Roger."
oh my god
Using Goldsmith's SUPERGIRL soundtrack for MMPR. The only good thing about that clip.
10:09... Harrelson ran into a stuntman with a bike... they clearly crossed a line there!!!!
Paulie Shore is the poor man's Paulie Shore
One thing I've noticed in this "worst of" episode is that most of these movies have gone on to become cult classics.
Yeah, I like most of these movies haha
I only see WATERWORLD, SHOWGIRLS. Which ones you mean?
a) I see nothing here that would qualify as a "cult classic?"
(perhaps you mean "so bad it's enjoyable")
b) You appear to think that your perception as "later became a cult classic" somehow invalidates the initial disappointment.
@@michaelmcdonald8452 I guess it all depends on your definition of being "Cult".
I liked “Money Train,” but I agree with these guys on pretty much all the other movies here… admittedly, “Showgirls” was fun to watch for all of the hot sex scenes and bad acting that rates on the same level as Tommy Wiseau, haha!
Gene Siskel "talking" to Stallone is one of the best things I have seen in Siskel&Ebert
Scarlett Letter is definitely the worst on this list. I remember my mom wanted to see it because she liked Gray Oldman. So I saw sev7n instead. I definitely got the better deal. Atleast Showgirls is entertaining a must for fans of it's so bad it's good.
The dry hump whoopie deserved an Academy Award's nomination.
So, how many of these movies are in your collection?
None because they suck
0
5, I genuinely love Judge Dredd and Showgirls. Tank Girl and Waterworld are weird but fun. I own a copy of Money Train only because I worked on the film.
@@mjwbulich Cool 😎!
Candyman 2, Showgirls, KIDS, Cutthroat Island, Mortal Combat, Hackers, Bushwacked… 1995 was like THE year of the bad movie.
Some of these I will defend as popcorn classics to this day. Back when bad movies were great.
The Mid-90's utterly stunk. So many lousy, over-produced, poorly acted, lame-brained, ego-driven movies. That being said, Mortal Kombat ain't too bad, since the cast is pretty good.
Kids is a masterpiece. Maybe the most realistic depiction of teenagers in the history of cinema.
@@ryanjacobson2508 1994 is generally considered one of the best years in film history. Kinda pokes some holes in your theory.
@@mjwbulich anybody who calls that movie a masterpiece should be registered as a sex offender, that piece of trash is child porn amped up for shock value
And the jury is still out on virtual reality
VR technology just isn't there yet. Even now, 28 years later, you still have to wear a big, clunky thing on your head, the visuals at best only reach the uncanny valley, and the "reality" still doesn't include touch (or taste or smell, but never mind those). I'm a little concerned that if VR ever gets really convincing, people will never come out of it.
The statement about criminals imitating scenes in the movie is true.
Yup. There's an episode of Investigative Reports entitled Copycat Crimes.
@@reneedennis2011 There is also a show called Copycat Killers. It is about murders that were committed by people either copying what they saw on movies or were influenced by the movies.
@@fournierman Wow. That's scary 😨 😳!
I know there were a lot of copycat criminals inspired by Natural Born Killers. I only liked the scene with Rodney Dangerfield. The rest of the film was crap.
Damn! Siskel absolutely eviscerated Stallone lol😂.
I love Judge Dredd... the first time I watched it, I had to watch it again the next day.
I liked it too. Yeah, it was a little cheesy, but it was fun. The few people that actually read the comic didn't like that he took his helmet off, but it would be like getting made that Thor doesn't wear his helmet in the MCU films (save for one or two shots).
"DREDD" with Karl Urban was awesome.
@@Paulafan5 "the few people"? Nah, 2000 AD was a very popular comics series when I was growing up in the 80s. More of a European fan base, but a huge following nonetheless. And it wasn't just Dredd taking his helmet off that bothered fans, the whole tone of the film is garbage. The worst culprit is that's its too silly and comedic, and then it's all over the dam place. Rob Schneider was the dumbest casting decision ever.
awful.
I’m surprised they didn’t mention Adam Sandler in the same breadth of that scale of comedic actors. At that point, he was probably sandwiched between Farley and Shore.
He probably wasn't well known enough in 1995.
He hadn't done anything as bad as Pauly Shore.
@@CaptainSpalding72 I would say that his movies got better, at times, over time, but that Pauly Shore’s movies never really got better, haha!
@@Nathan-gd7xq In 1995, Sandler starred in _Billy Madison,_ which was successful, debuting at #1 at the box office.
@@VinMar-m6w exactly, he'd only had one hit movie by that point. He wasn't that well known.
It was prince albert in a can
Yeah, Roger misremembered that one. Prince Albert is a brand of pipe tobacco that's packaged in cans. Pennywise told that joke in the miniseries of IT in 1991. But Gene was right, too: The King Oscar company makes all kinds of canned seafood.
I remember when Steve-O got a Prince Albert in his can.
Stunning how bad Waterworld was coming off of Dances with Wolves. Perhaps Costner had signed the contract for Waterworld before the success of Dances?
5 years later? hahaha. NO.
@@CaptainSpalding72 You are right. I didn't realize the gap was so wide.
My god Siskel hated Chris Farley didn't get him at all lol
Farley was for Gen X.
I cracked up as his hate for Farley. I thought he had some funny skits and I laughed at SNL but most of his movies were forced and not very funny for me Gen X
18:25 I generally love Siskel & Ebert (esp. Roger) but we can really see Siskel's priggish moralistic streak here when he's talking about Jade. The man could really get on his high horse! He was the same about Slashers. His newspaper review of Friday the 13th is really savage (see also: Silent Night, Deadly Night)
What a line-up!
I am rewatching waterworld today because of this great old show great nostalgia
waterworld, showgirls and judge dredd as the worst of the year shows real lack of foresight
Whatever......"Showgirls" was the best movie of 1995.
10/10
That doesn’t speak well for 1995
Showgirls can’t fold Braveheart’s kilt
What a year!
Gotta see tank girl, that actress plays one of my fav characters in Orange is the Real Black
Now I remember why I was so burned out from cop or crime mob movies in the 90's. Too many!
Ebert: "...hasn't done anything for them, for their imagination. They just passively absorbed explosions, special effects, and chases." Sounds like Fast & Furious and the whole DC/Marvel/Avatar existence of 21st century cinema. God, I wish this were around these past 20 years!!
Ah man, Tank Girl the comic book fucking rules. Wish the movie wasn't like the absolute opposite
It wasn't awful
I like Tank Girl.
Pauly..... Ouch 🤕
Money Train I saw the second run 2 dollar cinema and paid too much....I liked Woody Harrelson but his character is an absolute jerk...
really interesting seeing Ebert slam that "interactive movie"... makes perfect sense considering his later opinions on video games.
Ebert didn't hate video games. He owned and played them. He just didn't consider them a series art form, certain not at the level of film.
I think this may be their best episode of all time.
How many Worst of lists in the 90’s did Demi Moore make?
Did they like Encino Man?
Ebert seems to forget that he wrote ‘Beyond the Valley of the Dolls’, a movie that I loved for the same reasons I loved ‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes’.
Siskel telling Ebert to settle down. Lol. 3:58
Vampire in Brooklyn was a guilty pleasure for me, but that's thanks in large part to Angela Bassett and Kadeem Hardison.
Judge Dredd was practically a movie made and cast with the international market in mind.
Jade cost 50 million and it was only 1hr30mins.
The Stallone Judge Dredd movie is one of those "so bad its good" flicks, I mean at least it had Max Von Sydow
They forgot Halloween The Curse Of Michael Myers which was pure ahit
10 year old me loved jury duty
I like TANK GIRL
So do I.
This was one of the worst years for movies and 2001 yikes
I stand by waterworld
“Waterworld” (1995)
5:18
the jerky boys was awesome! IDC what these 2 say! LOL
I love Waterworld!
Lol I still like that Power Rangers movie. It came out when I was like 10 so it was dear to my childhood. I understand why they wouldn't like it but I actually think it holds up. It wasn't completely devoid of lessons for kids either, there was the whole thing with the kids disobeying their parents by following Ivan Ooze and then they learn to respect their parents
Siskel never gave Chris Farley a chance. He couldn't stop comparing him to Belushi and Candy, both of whom had roots in Chicago. So Farley wasn't instantly as good as two of the funniest guys ever, therefore he's terrible?? That's not fair.
10:50-It’s a movie, Gene; Jesus 🤦♂️
Showgirls is that special kind of bad which warrants alcohol and friends. You can have a really good night if you just laugh at its silliness. The others are just plain bad.
I have to admit, I liked Water World.
I have to admit, like an egg-sucking dog, that Showgirls, Judge Dredd, Waterworld, Vampire in Brooklyn and The Jerky Boys Movie are guilty pleasures of mine. Go ahead and hit me, but I make no apologies for the things I like.
Since they hate on bad films so much as a waste of time, why then do they spend so much time on them in their show? Why not just review films that they mostly liked? Obviously discussing the bad films, many of them big-budget bombs, was good for the ratings.
don't insult mmpr the movie, it was awesome fun.
you can't just dismantle someone's car because they parked in a Handicapped Spot then acted like a douche about it.
I mean, you can't dismantle a car, period, but let's go along with Mr. Payback having whatever it was - three times the strength I think it said on the screen. (which still isn't strong enough to peel off a car's bumper as if it were duct-taped to the chassis, but whatever.)
it's the idea that it's a just punishment - joyously doing thousands and thousands of dollars of damage to someone's classic car because they were being a jerk is bizarre. not to mention criminal. Mr. Payback would end up in a state prison. what a strange movie.
Girard Depardieu in one, a maybe two other Columbus Features, so.manybyears before they begin to drag all the statues away: completely deary
Tommy Boy was a good movie.. Jury Duty was horrible..
Yeah tank girl is ridiculous and unwatchable.
At least it has some weird action and fun scenery. And Ice T in a kangaroo suit. I'd watch that or Dredd over pretentious crap like Scarlet letter.
Wow, Gene & Roger really got snippy with each other in this ep! Hysterical when they can't even agree how bad Pauly Shore and Chris Farley are! And ironically, they were both wrong. Comedy was never either one's strong suit.
What are you taking about. They both loved Wayne's World, Dumb And Dumber, Chevy Chase especially "Funny Farm" and the first Vacation movie, Beavis And Butthead Do America, Airoplane, Monty Python And The Holy Grail, Monty Python's Life Of Brian, etc etc.
I don't think you know what ironically means. Or comedy, if you're a Pauley Shore fan.
They're always correct about Adam Sandler tho 😂
Yeah, actually, I do, and its usage was correct.@@Nathan-gd7xq
Pauly Shore was and is still terrible and not funny. They weren't wrong about him AT ALL.
Showgirls, one of my daughter’s favorites 😂
All of these films are brilliant now
Jade was good in the theater. So was water world.
look jerky!
I went and looked at their list of the best of 1995 to contrast and compare. Outside of a few classics like Toy Story, Casino, and Apollo 13, most are long forgotten. Leaving Los Vegas was a critical darling that won Oscars yet no one ever talks about it. Meanwhile Showgirls is a cult classic that is still shown In packed theaters. Funny how these things work.

What's "funny" is your dumb ass observation.
a) Anyone with two eyes and a soul can see that Leaving Las Vegas (and every other movie here) is vastly better cinema than Showgirls.
b) the only reason anyone "still talks about" Showgirls is because of how comedically awful it is, which is the reason, if any that...

Oh, here are some other memorable films from 1995: Jumanji, Goldeneye, Se7en, Get Shorty, Heat...
Chris Farley is twice the funny as Jim Carrey.
Oh come on, Jade isn't bad.
Honestly, as famous as these guys were, they were so out of touch on so many things. Films that ended up as cult classics were being bashed by these guys initially. Movies were never just ok, they were either amazing or horrid pieces of trash. Not really sure why so many people took these guys seriously all this time.
Well duh. Films that end up as "cult classics" are ones that find an audience after initially receiving poor reviews and/or poor box office.
@@Nathan-gd7xq S&E were always overrated. During their time they still bashed legitimately good films, saying things about being "mean-spirited" and whatnot. Just lame reasons.
@@metalgrinch or "a real downer".
Well I mean that was the appeal behind S&E. You might agree with them both about one movie, agree with only one of them about another, or just completely disagree with both of them. S&E were a form of entertainment for movie lovers who wanted to hear what these two had to say and then compare thoughts and opinions with their own. Whether they ended up being spot on or way off, it's all part of the show's concept and it was a great idea. People just need to get a grip and quit bashing these two for becoming legends in something they loved and died doing.
Good lord I hate these guys! They are so one sided and closed minded.
They are critics, but at least it is their honest opinions and not filled with politics or being shills.
Critics are supposed to be opinionated, so you hate people with strong opinions? You have to be pretty open-minded to go see every major film release, and that's what they did for a living.
