Repotting bonsai the hard way!

- How do you repot a bonsai that has not been repot for a long time? Roots solid as wood that you cannot get out of the pot? At some point you just have to break the pot, and rethink your bonsai.
Yes, for this tree, this was the only way.
This tree had been in this pot for a long time, and the roots hd more or less fused. After trying to remove it from the pot the normal routes, we decided breaking the pot was the only way. The rootball was solid, and we had to split it off, after which a new route for the tree was choosen. It was a good class to see this level of repot up-close and learn more about the limits.
Entertaining and informative! Sometimes drastic measures must be taken. I find it strange that some people are reacting so negatively to this plant that they don't even own it. As long as the tree is healthy and the owner is happy, it's all good. Thank you for sharing, Jelle!
Not too many pots were harmed in the making of this video 😅
hehehe
I bet this was rock solid😂 great job!
This is exactly why I have to repot my larch every year😅👍🏻
true story!
Fun to watch but I bet it is a good looking tree too
:) It was a little neglected
Now repair the pot and put gold leaf on all the cracks. Kintsugi
Not too pot bound 👊😂😂
lol, solidified rootball
Poor pot 😔was it really root bound enough to do that much damage 🫤could’ve been salvable really look like a really good cascading pot 😢
Yeah, it really was the only way.
I can't wait for your video: pruning with a chainsaw
sorry, when I did the olive pruning by chainsaw, i was not recording video yet
this is not the way
Thank you for asking.
This tree had not been repotted for nearly a decade and with 4 persons we could not get it out. The rootball was completely wooden. This was part of a workshop on recovering old underworked trees. In the end we had to chisel part of the rootball off.
Yes, for this treee, this was the only way.
Still, a very funny comment!!! Had me laughing out loud!🤣 😂
The title was correct! Hard to watch. Lol Poor pot!
Yeah, I was really surprised when this ended up being the only way. But I guess that was the whole idea of this tree being brought into the workshop.
I guess the tree was initially supposed to be a cascade style but looks like it back budded along the trunk and neglected?
What species is this? If you know.
Exactly. I am not sure which species. I hope to go out to the nursery again soon and will look for the tree; I think they would not sell it within a season.
Zu lange gewartet😢😂
glucklicherweise nicht mein Baum
This is more like Banzai not Bonsai!
Thank you for asking.

Well, sometimes the measures needed are harsh. This had not been repotted so long that we could find an alternative. Was a very good learning moment I found
@@GrowingBonsaia decade? I think you need to get a different hobby you cannot provide the level of care trees like this need. Instead just plan it in the ground in a decade later you'll have some shade
@@seth6700 It wasn't his personal tree. Lol
Seth, learn how to read. This was a class on how to deal with dificult to repot trees, so that the class of bonsai teachers-to-be get a feel for what measures sometimes are needed. I amm pretty able to care for my trees thank you.
Holy Crp!😂
pretty much my thought. At first I thought he was joking!
When is best time to prune Brazil rain tree
I prune them just before they come inside for winter, but that is a logistics thing. I am not sure what is optimal. A spring-prune before the new growth in spring starts seems reasonable
I'd like to see evidence that it survived
The tree was not mine (It was the owner working the tree). If I go back to the place where this workshop took place, I will see if I can find it between their masses of trees.
@@GrowingBonsai honestly it's impressive of both the artists and the tree that all that hammering is survivable
In the end, a tree does not need all the roots to survive. A regular repot we also remove a large part of the roots. Here the method feels a little crude (But then again, I have seen people use large saws to remove the bottom half of a rootball!)
I definitely wont ask you to help me move house!
Good, because I will not help.
Well…. It wasn’t bonsai when they were repotting it…. So false advertising
Thank you for asking.

interesting position to take.
@@GrowingBonsai I’m not saying it wasn’t the only way because obviously it was but prior to you treating it. It was not considered bonsai it was just a root bound plant.
@@GrowingBonsai you mean… the factual position??
Not worth the effort and pot for such a tree.
the owner who had grown this for decades disagrees. It does need a bit of tlc, but for an old tree, a restoration is wort it?
@@GrowingBonsai I just meant pot is more valuable than the tree at the current situation.
