Perfect video for this time of year. Over the past couple of years I have been adopting the potting cycles that Harry Harrington (UK) has been recommending. So far the results have been good. i definitely agree with you about Olives. I repottted mine in early spring a few years back and it took them a long time to show any new growth. It is always fascinating to see the variations, but as you rightly say - with the right care we can repot through most of the year. Enjoy the Trophy weekend.
I understand why (physiologically) there is a ‘too late’ for repotting but what are the physiological reasons why 2 or 3 weeks ‘too early’ would be bad? Thanks!
Thank you for this very practical video. It is helpful to have authoritative sources make things easier for us enthusiasts. You and Xav have put out some terrific resources. Thank you! I check the trees every few days. So far, the some of the buds are coloring up but none have broken out except for the quince. I'll wait to repot those after the flowers are finished. So, I am on to figuring out pots and making sure I have enough substrate mixed up. Always something to do in the "bonsai garden".
I am trying not to miss any of your videos. i really enjoy yor channel🎉 Thank you so much. Please keep sharing your experiances with the bonsai society.
I agree that with knowledge of species and proper aftercare you can repot safely. Even if the weather is unpredictable sometimes. 2 weeks ago i started some repotting (hot and dry) now after a week of cold and rain, there's 15°c/1°c (huge difference) so better wait a bit more.
Awesome video! Straight to the point! Very useful for begginers like me. Looking forward to my first sping doing bonsais. Have a great day! Saludos desde España
I appreciate you discussing the reasons for going with that square pot for the cork elm. It makes sense to me that you'd pair those two so I think that your instincts are better than you give yourself credit for. Another great video. Keep it up. Love the mix of subtle science in your videos - nothing too high confusing but just enough to awaken more questions to search Google for. video idea: why would I choose whether or not to prune in winter vs spring. What are the different results of each (you could even throw in all the seasons and tell us why not to prune in certain seasons).
Super helpful video. 👍 Thank you Jelle. I guess some of my trees suffered from wrong timing for repotting, last year. So I try to reduce those losses by choosing the perfect timing. Hopefully lesson learned. Thx again 🙏😘 Cheers
Hello, I'm a total beginer at this and I'm watching all your videos. I would like to make a suggestion which I would find really useful: Could you make a video explaining what you do to the trees throughout the year? Like, what you do during summer other than watering...., autumn , winter, spring. I have collected a few trees, and I don't want to over do or not do enough. Thanks so much for the videos, it's really helpful .
I found in the south east of England repotting is getting earlier each year. Repotyed maples already. I agree the tree's tell you when to repot not the calendar.
Great and very informative content of your entire channel - keep on doing. My repotting season in Berlin has also begun. There´s no serious frost to be expectet, so I will be very busy for the next few weeks - like probably most of us enthusiasts
I have some trees that I already have repotted. Some young maple and field maples, crab apples and spirae chinensis(I think chinensis 😂). All where at bud break and have place reserved in the shed in case off frost. My larch is still in winter modus, looking forward to its repotting time. I have placed a tourniquet on the final long/big root that needed the come off last year. Did not have the guts to cut it off last year(because this is my most developed tree). If the rootbase looks good now, I can start building my branches. Greats from Belgium, and maybe I see you on sunday(at the trophy)
Hey good evening Jelle, as you said in the video, the Bonsai Trophy is this weekend! I'll be there on Sunday and will try to get you in front of the camera ;) I'm looking forward to seeing you on Sunday! Luck on bonsai buddy, Patrick!
Hello. I have a question regarding watering, I would be very happy to answer. Typically, coniferous bonsai trees such as pine trees are planted with a lump of garden soil in which they originally grew, and when watered, it turns out that the old lump of soil dries out much more slowly or quickly than the rest of the granular soil in the pot. How to water correctly in this case? Do I need to wait until the central lump dries on top? Or should I water it when the main soil is dry?
sectet option 3: I do not leave old soil in there and make sure they are all in quality substrate. Takes a few repottings for some species but I do not like dense muck. Most feeders are in the newer outer substrate, so that should be your watering indicator.
I always learn a ton from your videos! Thank you for making them. How about Japanese black pine and white pine? When to repot those compared to the trees you discuss in this video?
Pines are not my strength when it comes to repotting. Typically you repot them as the candles extend, just before the needles come out. So that is normally mid-spring.
I have a question I am new to growing prunus mume and I used a technique to defoliate the leaves to get more branching better ramification but I did not get any flowers on the leaves that I defoliated I only got flowers on the few leaves that I left on the interior of the tree so my question is is if you cut a leaf off do you do away with the flower and get a new set of leaves that become a branch
If I did a fairly heavy styling in autumn on juniper (from nursery stock to basic shape) would you recommend report already this spring or waiting to recover fully I kind of want to get it into better soil. Also been enjoying your content for about a year now keep them videos coming :)
Hi Bartosz, hard to answer as a general: It depends a lot on how much damage was done to the tree when working it. If you have a lot of branches with internal damage, a repot can just result in loosing branches or even the tree. Recommended practice is to wait a growing season. That being said.. I routinely rework my trees over winter, and repot at the first regular repotting moment for the species; Which would be the first spring typically. And with bad soil, I can be bold and do it in one session and put the tree in a greenhouse. But that IS takign a risk. I am just arrogant enough to feel I know when I can do this :)
Hello! Great video, thanks. You mentioned missing the wondow. My Acer Maple annoyingly decided to leaf while i was on holiday in the last 2 weeks. Its a youngish tree, maybe 2 years old but i want to repot in a large shallow container to help spread the roots. The leaves are small, but they are there. Is it too late to repot?
Thank you for answering so many of my questions Jelle - like you were reading my mind! Do you have any advise for trees like Chaenomeles japonica that leaf out in mid-to-late winter?
Yeah, I have two of them. They are really far ahead here too. I do repot them when the buds start opening, so in winter. I am lucky to have a shed and a small unheated greenhouse which I can use to put plants that need a bit of shelter.
Ha Jelle, wat heb je gebruikt op 1:22 om op het grondmengsel te leggen tegen merels etc. Ik heb echt veel nodig en zou het graag ergens voordelig kopen. Heb je tips?
Hello Jelle, what about Scots pines? The same rule should be applied? Repot it when the buds starts to swell and grow? I have only young trees or seedlings, I would like to collect some more from the forest and the best time for repotting should be the best time for collecting as well (if I'm right).
I wish you would have shown more of the lilac bonsai. I have a bunch that im developing and you're tree looked pretty well developed and the Burberry tree as well.. ohh that last tree looked like the lilac....... nice😅
😂I always drink my beers while I'm repotting. Follow me for more tips 🤣🤣🤣 At some point I decided I liked repotting, but I'm not at that point with wiring yet. 🍻
Hm.. If you repotted this week and now you conclude it died.. You might be reading symptoms wrong. Do NOT throw the tree away but place it somewhere sheltered. When it warms up it might start growing again. Olives can sometimes stay bare for a full year and still resprout.
What is the problem with repotting a week later, when the leafs are slightly bigger? Will the pruning of the roots stop the tree from transporting water to the leafs? If so, why isn't that a problem when the tree is waking up?
Nice to see the trees waking up!!!
Sooo great to feel that spring is sooo near now!
I am dying to start repotting some trees, alas, i must wait 😢. Great video and very informative.
An excellent overview of and reminder on repotting one’s bonsai. Thank you.

@@GrowingBonsai unfortunately not. My van decided it needed to spend a lot of my money in the garage this month 😕
Letting the buds tell you when to repot is great! I always find the verious bonsai "calendars" to be confusing. Great video!
Yes! Thank you!
Im subscribed 😊
The repotting video was timely and helpful. Especially regarding my larch, which has responded to our warm February by waking up early. Many thanks!
You’ve got some great looking trees Jelle. It’s nice to see trees without leaves in their winter form where you can appreciate the structure
Absolutely true. I love winter for adjusting the deciduous!
I understand why (physiologically) there is a ‘too late’ for repotting but what are the physiological reasons why 2 or 3 weeks ‘too early’ would be bad? Thanks!
I'd say because the tree isn't moving resources up in the tree yet so when you cut off the roots you are removing a lot of the trees energy.
Sehr hilfreiches Video für mich. Vielen Dank 😊
Very nice timely video, such a relief! You "know it" but some confirmation is always welcome.
:) Thx!

Agree, I've got two cotoneaster, one has not dropped any leaves this year, the other has dropped a few. So very hard to tell when would be optimal
If you look at the plant, you should be able to see growth starting, as buds start swelling and the first buds start to open
