Imagine my luck when I got in to Bonsai and realised I have 5 Japanese maple on my property that my uncle planted 20 years ago 😂
look into airlayering too!

@@GrowingBonsaiwhat brand of rooting hormone do you use?
@@maggillaguerrilla830 I use any one I find with "I.B.A." in the main components, means "indol butiric acid" I don't have many choices in Patagonia
Forget the cutting, dig the 2 best tree for a good old yamadori.
Very usefull for me , while your going into spring qnd summer, i get prepared for winter and spring.
I did this last season an have seven new mapples...now I have like 50 new cuttings to check for repotting.
I Already have bought many plastic boxes to fill next season...in my experience , the most important factor, is to be covert , with no ventilation, to keep near a 90% air humidity, and no direct sun
:) No NEED to chek right. You can also wait for spring repotting
@@GrowingBonsaithank you
sure I'll check next spring...and by the way , the dead ones will be easy to see.
How long need the cuttings to get new roots? Can i do it now or when its the best time for cut little maple sticks for getti g roots?
@@S.SunnyT. Jelle will tell tou better, but about rooting time...just leave it to the next season , just when sprouts are starting to swell.
I don't know how your season and plants are doing, but when you have a new branch of 10 15 cm or less, you can cut, better if the sprouts and still pushing new leaves, you cut the youngest two ones...see Jelle's video about maple 🍁 cuttings...I have seen some others but in spanish...I think there is also a friend called Maple garden... I'll check
Rooting japanese maple cuttings ( jelle)
rooting compound is amazing.
Cool! It's just confirm .
I did the same with cuttings from deshojo bonsai
Great 👍 And.. it worked too?
Great 👍
Nice quick guide on rooted cuttings! We need more of this, to spread those hard to find cultivars! Careful labeling please!!
My cutting priority this year is Beni Chidori, Seigen, Shin Deshojo, Nishikigawa, Hubble’s Super Cork, and Arakawa.
🙏🏽 🪴 🍁
Good luck!
Does the leaf cutting work for fruit trees like apple trees?
Very useful video! I’ll try it this year :) do you have a Beni chidori in your collection @GrowingBonsai ?
I am not sure! My big pink maple could be seigen or beni chidori!
What rooting hormone do you use?
Was this answered? My question too
Clonex Rooting Gel. 😁 best stuff ever. My girlfriend and I have cloned so many things successfully. Any root growth gel will work.
Mine is still in bud form here in MI. Patiently waiting!
soon waking up?
Very cool!
Thaanks!
Excellent Jelle!!
thx
I need to find some maple trees.
I can't afford 200-300 dollars from local nurseries.
Fortunately, i live in Vermont!
I just wish I could find Japanese and dark red/garnet coloured ones in the wild.
They do root from spring cuttings, so if you know some planted somewhere, as to take cuttings!?
@@GrowingBonsai great to know!
Love the video in the first part did you accidentally say "in early spring when tips are starting to slow down" I think you meant to say "in early spring when tips are starting to show/grow"?
Not really. It really is when the first spring push has extended and the trees take a break.
@@GrowingBonsaiyes I understand
What was the substrate (purple liquid) name? I didn't catch it, thanks 🙏
I have the same question.
@@racheldavies5225 he uses Clonex i think
I ended up getting these Japanese maple trees from my old apartment after they took over several of my new pottering plants. Who knew I'd be taken several with me in my new apartment. I was about to trim them so my new plant can strive. Unfortunate, they overpowered it & died away or they grew around it. 😅
You win some [maples] and loose some [houseplants]. All in balance?
Are you planting the clones in a gravel mixture?
what kind of soil is good for propagating the cuttings?
Multumesc
my pleasure
So, cut all but the top few leaves and fresh growing tip as you cut the fresh growing tip?
Yes, the young tip often starts rotting before rooting occurs
Can I do this in September after growing season?
You can try. I am trying a july / august set of cuttings. Main concern I have is that the roots might not be mature enough if we get early frost
What’s the best way to tell when first flush has finished?
I look at the foliage and I check whether the branches are getting more stable. Once you have a number of leaves and they stay up by themselves you should be OK to go.
@@GrowingBonsai Thank you for the response... i was curious, are you favoring the tray and dome over the pot and sandwich baggy method??? Does more air space have better results?
@@abidingdude222 hm.. No I do not think I do. I have better results with a baggie. It was really a space thing. This year I bought a more sta le dome to retry
@@GrowingBonsai I just did two bags of Katsura and 1 of shindeshojo, we'll see how they turn out!
I placed some cuttings inside bonsaiearth & keep them wet.
They are 4 weeks old now & they didn't look very healthy... is there a chance they will build up roots & grow?
Obviously he has NO answer to ur question!!!
Unfortunately all three of my bags developed mold. I even microwaved each container for 5 minutes and sprayed with hydrogen peroxide solution... no idea how to combat this.... :(
**note... i microwaved vermiculite BEFORE planting the cuttings, not after HAHA...
Moisture is the friend of cuttings, but air is the enemy of mold. If you can gain back moisure then airing them sometimes can perhaps be an idea? Someone mentioned in a comment that he is careful not to open, and I am careful to open. Hah. What do you say, @GrowingBonsai ?
@@nordicmind82 Yes, I immediately opened and sprayed with more hydrogen peroxide solution and let them air out and manually sprayed... Unfortunately they didn't make it.. I'm thinking I need to figure out a way to clean the vermiculite better next time and perhaps have less moisture in the container to start... not sure... would be interesting to see what other people say.
I hardly ever have problems with fungal infections. I typially start opening the bag after 4-6 weeks.
@@GrowingBonsai 😩😩😩 I think o might have started with too much water in the vermiculite and possibly had it by a wall that warmed up too much. Who knows. Guess I’ll try again next spring….
Not sure I understand all the words. You dip the end in ‘cutting hormones?, What is that? In substrate like perpiculate?
clonex rooting gel
What do you call that brown thing in the pot? Thanks
I am not sure what you mean with that brown thing?
What hormon you used ?
Wanneer is de beste tijd om stekken te nemen? werkt dit met alle acer cultivars?
Ik ga dit weekend stekken nemen. Als de jonge takken wat stevigheid krijgen.
Can I root Japanese maple with a branch?
best to look into air layering
What kind of planting soil are you using?
Vermiculite

@@GrowingBonsai helaas. weet je waar ik ze kan krijgen,. geweldig kanaal btw
Where can I get rooting hormone
I get it online from a large trading platform
Are these bloodgood Japanese maples?
nah, deshojo
Whats this enclosure called?
here they are called mini-greenhouses and are sold in garden centres
But new tree will have no top growing, just the sides?
of course it will have a top. Side branches will grow upwards
@@GrowingBonsai yes, but not symmetrical. Isn't maple top tree, or is this a schrub species? Why would we cut top in the first place?
I think it's because,if you leave the top on the plant/tree it will put all it's energy into growing new leaves,so it will try growing it..This way it will put the energy into making roots..
I am not a 💯 sure but this is what makes sense to me..
I apologise if I am wrong..
Have a great day 🤘🤘
I find that they do not have a good strong root system as a grafted tree
I find they are stronger than grafted trees
In which substrate? Dont hear it right in the video
vermiculite

Yes Certainly!
What's that mixture you're using? Looks like maybe some vermiculyte, but also sounds like pumice or perlite too? I'm struggling to find a healthy mix that doesn't lead to bad mildew or root rot issues but still stays moist. Using a biofungicide whenever I can but it's hard to tell when I need to water with more..

Care este solul?
In ce luna se poste planta?
This is the FIRST sentence in the video. In early spring after the first flush starts to slow down.
Does this work for a woody crimson queen branch in water?
I have no idea. For me, rooting in water does not give good results.
Mine always fail
Do you know what you do differently?
Fail how? Rot/mold/dry out/wither/explode/insects/rats/cats/bats/never grows roots/escape/grow roots and then become droopy and die/etc?
And do you use the magic purple slime?
Magic purple slime 🤣😂🤣😂
