    in this video i share very realistically what I spend in a week after quitting my job. let's chat about the money mindset the helped me save enough to quit, how I track expenses, what's changed in my spending habits before vs. after quitting my job, and how i make my money last living on savings (while also trying to enjoy life). I also talk about relocating to a different country as a way to cut living expenses, and share my experience relocation from the U.S. to China, where I currently live.
    i hope you find this helpful, if you are also thinking about quitting your job, becoming a digital nomad, or are living on your savings:)

    As someone who's income is also mostly online and is considering permanently moving back home to China after half of my life spent in the US, the daily expenditure difference has always been the major appeal, but you've also shown how important it really is to be in an environment where it's safe to ride a bike to get groceries, vs buying whatever you feel like because there's room in the car. I've realized that since quitting, there is no real need to rush a permanent day-off, so the simple things like "having to walk/bike" become less about inconvenience and more about fulfillment, and that realization kickstarts a cycle towards an overall healthier active lifestyle of which you wouldn't need to then make time and set aside money for to achieve via the gyms and overpriced pseudo-healthy foods in the US. This really affirms that we're both onto something, thanks for keeping it real and transparent! 😲

      I was in the US when instacart and amazon fresh first started and I could not understand the appeal of paying for someone to get your groceries, because going to the grocery store was such a joyful thing to me - which is why coming back to China and getting most things online feels like something is missing from life...but, at the same time, cost of living is much much lower here. There's no perfect place in the world, only the places that make you most happy despite their imperfections. All the very very best:)

      i understand you're view, perhaps japan is better? provided you can live off of savings or smth free of japan's over work industry the things you said being able to safely ride a bike to get groceries, you can get healthy food for very cheap. and japan doesnt censor or you are not in danger of "disappearing" for thing you have said

    It's funny to see this video in my recommendations. I quit my job as a consultant at 29 yo too, I used my savings to take a break after a burn out. I'm currently studying to get a certification before I go back to a corporate job, but i'm enjoying the slow pace right now and I've traveled a bit! Living stress free FEELS GREAT. I'm loving it.

    I'm 29 and I also quit my last 10-7 office job last month.
    I came across your videos again and I remembered watching one of them talking about leaving your consultancy career for content creation full-time. This got me intrigued with your story, hence I'm watching you talk about living post employment with our savings while working on building our dreams. Likewise, I am educating myself on the many things a creative professional would do online from YT and IG.
    It isn't easy for me to acknowledge the fact that I don't have a lot of savings and I am hoping to land a job soon, while learning new marketing, branding, designing skills. God, it is really that stressful.
    I'm glad you shared your story in such an honest and authentic manner. I don't feel so lonely in this journey. Much love from Malaysia. :)

      Thanks for sharing! I follow many creators (kchoi, lilian chiu, julia fei, Taylor Bell etc.) who manage to balance a fulfilling career and content creation - which makes me hopeful that it is possible. Everyone's situation is different, and despite making my "breakup" with corporate public, I do believe working in corporate can be a mutually beneficial relationship. So, if that's what's right for you for the moment, you got this - get that job, earn that money, learn those skills you need, and I'll be rooting for you!

    I live in one of the most expensive places in the entire world atm. I also keep a record of all of my spending. On avg... I spend approx 1000HKD / month. My 80sq ft matchbox room alone ( no kitchen/ toilets/ windows ) cost a little over 3k hkd... but do get partial govn't subsidy due to health issues. So that, plus food, utilities... and everything comes up to around 1K hkd ( out of pocket ). Have to be EXTREMELY frugal to survive....

    As for thoughts on the digital nomad lifestyle, I feel like it has some negative connotations these days. Those are mostly because of people who have higher paying jobs and move to lower cost of living places to specifically take advantage of the resources, while not respecting the local community, culture, or laws. In some more popular destinations, the local communities have complained about rapid gentrification, cost of living going up too quickly, and disparity because of too much people coming into a small area that do not have all the resources to support the population. There has also been a couple of well known incidents that caused controversy online with certain individuals disrespecting local communities. But I feel like there has to be a way to be ethical and respectful and still do it if you have the right mindset.

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  8 месяцев назад +6

      Thanks so much for the insight! I hesitate to describe my lifestyle as truly "digital nomad", because I live China, and am considered a local. My friends in China who are from different parts of the world are very interested in the local culture and respectful of the laws (lovely ppl), however I can totally understand how a huge influx of digital nomads with higher purchasing powers would disrupt small local communities in detrimental ways...I'm an optimist and do agree that there has to be a way to do it ethically and respectfully!

    The cost of living is crazy there 😭 In Australia, it costs around 150 AUD (~90USD) for my partner and I for GROCERIES ONLY per week. And that's at the minimum since usually we go over that. We're students so that's on the low end of what people spend here

    • @tapiocapress
      @tapiocapress  8 месяцев назад +6

      Thats’s crazy!!! When I lived in the US it was almost impossible to walk out of the grocery store without spending 100 USD (and I used to go every week), but now I rarely spend more than 10 USD on a grocery trip…crazy to think about this massive difference!

      @@superthevibe this came across kind of rude. "it's not hard to buy things only when on sale or clearance". Yet we're in a cost of living crisis. Yes, it is hard. We only buy from Aldi or homebrand and always at the lowest unit cost. There's not always food on clearance at our supermarket and if there is, it goes bad quickly. We rarely eat out bcus it's so expensive so we're buying enough food for 7 days of food. We don't have time to go to the supermarket every day to look for clearance. We also have two cats to buy litter and food for (which is part of that cost). It all adds up.
      Everyone's different. $150 - $170 (what we spend) is not "really high". It's very average for our area. Your spending would be on the low end considering the average household spends $170+ per week. Even at $100-$150, the costs she described in the video are absolutely significantly lower. Spending only a few dollars on eating out and only 10 USD at the grocery store is unheard of here.

    I am working fulltime currently. I live without work in the past. I would just track mynexpenses, I spend less on instant food and cook everything more from scratch. It works wonders in saving my own money. Now, I am working long hours. It's really been tough go cook the same way hence why I buy more instant food😅

    just got laid off this May and have not accepted a new job since. currently my day-to-day life, other than applying for a new job, I reconnect to doing things I love. living on my compensation and savings, but it's starting to eat me mentally. tbh, I'm scared, with today's job industry, I can't even get a job at all... even if I have savings, if I don't get a stable income, the savings will not save me anymore :( I'm just turning 25 this month, btw..

    Content creation looks so rewarding and love seeing you get creative but the only thing that scares me is the loneliness. I don't like my current 9-5 but I enjoy going in and meeting everyone in the office, that's the only thing that I like and would hate to miss out on. Do you feel loneliness or boredom?

      I feel you! It gets tough when you are at home all day every day, just yourself and the computer. I have been trying to get out of the house once a day, and it really helps! In the mean time I'm trying to make more friends in the city...it's so hard trying to not fill every moment with productivity when I feel so much pressure to make my own career work, but it's so important to make time for friendships!

    I’m 28, I left my job due to chronic pain, because work comp kept delaying treatment, and even now feeling like it’s a dead end. I guess i have somewhat of a sugar husband haha since he pays the bills, and I use my savings to buy extra things. Still feels kinda lame to be unemployed especially feeling like I wasted going to college, but will try to enjoy it more like you. Don’t even have kids so feel guilty for being at home so I just do hella chores. Thank you for your video

    I am all for digital nomads, but there are some things to consider. If a person is moving say from the US to Mexico to cut their cost of living, I thinks it valid but there tenda to be a sense of superiority from the foreigneres going to these cheaper places. I think it is important to consider the amount of time spent in a new place and how a foreigner can contribute to the community there - say if staying a year pay the local taxes (if staying a month I think its fine). And make sure they are respecting the culture, people, ans undestand their privilege and that eventhough for them its cheap for some of the local people it is still expensive. I know you are Chinese so I dont think rhis applies to you but just some thoughts.
