It’s comforting to know that Dr. Mike also says “slow, control” to himself (during the belt squat demo). Honestly, I often hear his voice in my head while lifting 😅
The shaking effect is a phenomenon called "pulse modulation". As you approach failure, motor units are shutting off and dropping out due to fatigue. You therefore have fewer motor units firing in rapid succession which compromises smooth movement. It is like pulling spark plugs on an engine that is running. When you are firing on 4 pistons instead of 8 the engine will start to shimmy and shake. Same principle applies when motor units shut off due to fatigue. If you are doing this on a machine with a long or flexible movement arm it will appear even more exaggerated because the long lever amplifies the shaking. Credit for recognizing this concept goes to Ken Hutchins.
Yeah I am in the same boat...I wonder what Dr. Mike would suggest as a similar movement? I've someone doing a belt style squat with a cable rack. Might have to give it a shot.@@ChappersLaNoCry

Henry steinborn known for the steinborn squat. He is the reason weightlifters squat the way they do. In 1920, at 27 years old, he squatted 550lbs for 5 reps and this barbell was lifted from the floor by steinborn and positioned on his back without assistance.
Dr. Mike, the 'butthole to the ceiling' cue, has literally revolutionized my lower body workouts. It's a small thing, but focusing on raising that butthole as high as possible, rather than lowering the weight as low as possible, makes all the difference. After a decade of lower back pain and an inability to do RDLs, this has changed everything. I've only tried this for a few weeks, obviously, but not only can I do RDLs now - and they feel great - but, in turn, it seems to provide both mobility and stability to my lower back (so far, no pain). I can't wait to see how this translates to squats.
I've ruptured both quad tendons over the years, and belt squats are now my go to heavy compound. I'm closing in on 50, and this exercise allows me to overload in a way I cannot realistically do with a bar on my shoulders.
@@joelhedgepeth5371 how did you actually do them? You fell and landed on your feet? And did you go too heavy on the hack squat and stopped too fast or yanked at it? Sorry to be nosey but I'm curious so indent do it.
I'm going to try your techniques. I'm 51. I've been lifting on and off 30 years. This last "off duty" lasted about 6 years. So I know I have to start all over again and I'm preparing myself to do that. I do have some lower back damage so I have to be carefull on putting to much strain on it. Good stuff man!
I had an orthopedic therapist(who lifts) break exercise down for me and I've never went back to endless exercises. He said, "Simply watch the way the muscle contracts and choose the best exercises for that movement pattern. Instead of Bulgarian Split Squats....which places too much pressure on the single joint...just do regular squats. The muscle contracts the same and it's much safer." I keep my routine simple, emphasize compound lifts, and basic accessory work and I've consistently grown more. You can build massive legs with this type of squat and nothing else. It makes life so much more simple as well.
Jared training techniques & his body flow seamlessly with the SRDLs & Belt squats which are among my faves for lower body days!! I trained similar to Jared & it’s very to see great techniques and beautiful forms. Doing some frog squats before Belt squats will get your body in-tuned to how you should brace, back position, primarily engaging your glutes at the bottom is key to get quality reps. That comes with great ankle mobility & consistently getting deeper into your squats with some dynamic warm up to open up the hips before squats. Game changer once you’re able to get lower comfortably & feel your glutes & squats pumping!!
Tom Platz was my early inspiration to train fuckkkinnnng hard. I did and hurt myself doing heavy ass squat everyday for a while. Now my inspiration has shifted over to the RP team, I want to be a part of the inspiration that changes and influences my life. When will you train with fans again????
Hello Dr. Mike. I tried to do this thing where I squatted standing on risers because I thought it would add ROM and that you'd be proud... But everyone told me it was dumb and now I'm embarrassed. I'll only stick to stuff you've approved from now on. ❤
Good to see some belt squat on here. Seems like Dr. Mike usually favorites the leg press or hack squat more often, but I prefer the belt squat by a wide margin.
Dr Mike, I have been lifting since 1977, many years of not knowing what I was doing. Now 64, I have written and tried over 200 training programs and I will tell you that you speak the truth and I truly enjoy your videos. Sometimes the homo kidding gets a bit thick but you are entertaining and I have now subscribed. I will comment and may reach out to you, God bless and take care.
On the RDLs if any of you guys are doing them try doing them facing in the opposite direction of the machine. I find that the other way hits the hamstrings and glutes really well and feels better on the lower back. Only drawback is obviously you need someone there to grab the safety catch at the end of the set.
Excellent exercise! As someone with past back injuries, I can offer some extra points that SHOULD have been emphasized. Some experience a shearing effect with this movement on the lower spine. This can be mostly negated by getting that belt as LOW as possible. This is why it is rightfully called "THE HIP BELT SQUAT." Also, (it shouldn't need to be said) make sure your core is strong. Any weakness around the lower spine should be addressed before doing ANY new movement.
Been waiting on this vid for a looong time. Love belt squats. They just feel so good. BB squatting makes me so concerned with technique that it takes away from the movement. Leg press is okay but feels awkward when going deep for me. Belt squats are so much more natural.
I started doing lying on my back leg presses on my smith machine again...really devolps strength and size...i do a pre exhaust set of extensions first...4 or 5 sets increasing weight working till 1 reserve and failure pretty much is all i need...30 plus years ago i wish i paid attention to the science instead of no pain no gain over training past failure routines.
I absolutely love the hip squat rdl. It has been my main movement for a month or two. I go into a rounded back-straight leg stretch at the bottom and pull myself into the anterior pelvic tilted start position and initiate the movement. I feel like this allows me to tension my hamstrings at a deeper stretch position than otherwise. Also I haven’t been able to get the belt squat to feel right so I’ll give those suggestions a shot. The rubbing is annoying though lol
I think some of the shaking comes from fatigue or weakness of the stabilizer muscles. It this case weakness is relative but many stabilizers tend to be smaller muscles that will fatigue more quickly compared to the power of the more global muscles involved. In my experience I see this most noticeably in newer lifters but I would be curious as to your thoughts. Great video as always!
Drops this on Monday, which is my leg day too. Always start the week off with leg day. Mine wasn’t as hard though as I’m recovering from abdominal muscle strain from going too hard a few weeks back. Still hit body weight training with high TOT to make up for lack of resistance though.
I hit legs on Saturday. Hitting legs tomorrow. We have no less than 12 squat racks at EOS. They are all used. I dont want anyone to figure out the belt squat we have in the corner. The belt squat is an amazing device.
I am at 400 lbs right now on that machine, I feel I could lift a lot more but due to a meniscal tear and 20 years of ice hockey, I am afraid to go that low. Any tips? That machine is by far my favorite and helps me a lot as a time trialist cyclist.
It’s comforting to know that Dr. Mike also says “slow, control” to himself (during the belt squat demo). Honestly, I often hear his voice in my head while lifting 😅
Same, I have Dr. Mike yelling at me in my head "too fast, do it again!" Haha
If I had a dollar for every time I heard Mike’s voice when lifting, I would make my monthly gym fee every training session
same here. i say the same to my clients...hehe
Me too. I'm always like slow it down.
"Slow slow slow goddamn it" plays in my head every damn time.
