No. 23 Syracuse escaped a battle with No. 15 Louisville on a controversial finish in the JMA Wireless Dome.
Louisville’s Olivia Cochran was called for an intentional foul on Dyaisha Fair with 2.3 seconds remaining. The Cardinals had fouls to give at the end of the fourth quarter, but Cochran was whistled for an intentional foul as officials determined she was not attempting to make a play on the ball.
Fair made both free throws to give the Orange a 73-72 victory.
The Orange trailed by nine points midway through the fourth quarter yet completed another comeback behind clutch defensive stops by Saniaa Wilson and Fair, who minted another strong finish by scoring 10 of SU’s final 17 points down the stretch.
Fair led the Orange with 29 points and six rebounds. Junior Georgia Woolley added 14 points and freshman Alyssa Latham went for nine points, six blocks and five rebounds.
Wilson who replaced Latham in the starting lineup earlier this month, finished with two blocks and three rebounds in the decisive quarter.
Fair led an early Syracuse charge, taking on her defender one-on-one and drawing extra attention from defenders that allowed Woolley to get going.
Louisville’s defense focused on trying to eliminate Fair’s impact on offense. There were three pairs of eyes on the guard anytime she got the ball.
Syracuse struggled on defense and could not stop the Cardinals from scoring, even if it rarely allowed open looks.
Latham, though, delivered off the bench with five blocks in the first half to erase mistakes that could’ve led to more Cardinal points.
Syracuse took the momentum into the half, as Fair sank a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from the JMA logo to close the deficit to three.
Syracuse struggled to start the third quarter until Woolley got to the paint for good looks, and Fair brought the team back to just under five.
    Then, the fourth quarter came.
Fair hit a triple, before forward Wilson got a putback layup and Fair hit again from deep to make it a one-point deficit.
The two blocks by Wilson allowed SU to go on the break and take its first lead of the game with 2:36 remaining.
With 33 seconds left in the game, the Orange had possession and a chance for the win. The play broke down. Syracuse could not get a shot up. But the intentional foul with two seconds left gave Fair two free throws and possession.
The guard ran time out as she escaped Cardinal defenders to give Syracuse the win.
For the Cardinals, Nyla Harris led the way with 22 points.
The Orange next go on the road to face Miami on Thursday. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
