@@jamesfearn It depends. It is mostly genetic and I don't have any data but my guess is people have ~185 on average. It also gets lower and lower with age and It has nothing to do with your fitness which means someone with higher max hr won't be better than someone with lower max hr. It is individual and everyone who trains should know his max to then determinate optimal heart zones to train in.
At 4:36 you can see a Dolan Pre Cursa, one of the best value fixed gear you can find. A true classic. You can race it on the velodrome or commute with it. Framesets go for $500 new but there are usually some for way less second hand. If you want to start riding but don't want to drops grands on a road bike, buy this.
i had a showerthought that would benefit junior and kids racing at a young age. singlespeed racing would make it so much more accessible for parents to get their kids into racing while also making it safer in a way (lower top speed)
I think a lack of brakes would make it less safe. Presumably too you have to do this on closed roads (because road legislation in most jurisdictions says you need brakes - not unusual for those rules to state you need 2 independent braking systems too so the 'pedalling backwards' thing would count as 1 but you need a front brake as well)
Yeah it‘s a play on the Red Hook in Brooklyn. Cause the very first edition of this race was on a harbour site. So we simply said „It‘s a fixed crit on a harbour, but this is not Brooklyn.“
Great video Jeff and Will. To me this is reminiscent of F1 - I'm sure super interesting and difficult to actually do, but not great as a spectator sport because it's so hard to pass, you're just watching a funeral procession the whole time.
Rule #1 of riding fixed: Never EVER! stop pedaling If for some reason you forget rule #1 let your knees buckle edited to add: to go faster you have to pedal faster. It isn't about power as much as it is leg speed
Never stop thinking about pedaling. You tend to switch to automatic pedaling when you start thinking about something else, and when you're in automatic pedaling mode, you tend to switch to coasting at the appropriate places.
I'd expect a wide slick race tire like the new Pirelli P Zero Race TLR 40 mm to perform really well in a race like this. In a place where maintaining momentum through corners is vital wider is likely better.
Love how it was said: can’t make a lot of 90 deg turns due to pedaling; but looked at the shape of the course and it looks like it was designed horribly for a fixed gear.
Indoor Kart Racing is vastly different than this type of crit racing. Its entirely more technical in indoor kart racing as well as swapping out to different gear ratios to play to briefly darting out of corners to handling sharper turns. I disagree that you can conserve speed on an indoor track. Where as this level of crits has more of the tactics you cover quite often. Thank you for the great content !
Most likely: almost nothing. The wheel itself is too light to carry significant enough momentum to push the legs. Adding to that the fact that at least one pedal is likely hitting the ground and will transfer force in that direction, and you are not seeing much more injury than with any other road race. With how stretched the field is, its possibly less as there's less likelihood of folks crashing into each other
Guy is on 199 bpm for the whole race. 😂
Didn't Prince have a song about this race? "And tonight we're gonna crit race like it's 199..."

200 BPM for that long is insane
It depends. If his max hr is 220 then 200 is not hard to maintain for "that" long. My max is 205 and I can race at 185-190 average
If I hit 175, call an ambulance.
What is the normal max? Around 180-185 I need to stop and rest to reset myself.

Not sketchy at all omg lol
Looks like the roof of a shopping mall
Red Bull pile up crashes were terrifying, but the races were wicked exciting. Thanks.
Watching the power bar graph is hypnotic! Love the fixed gear content 👍
Dude who got second was running a belt drive.😮
Rider on the start line to the left with the belt for the chain.

Yeah was shocked to see that, it should be more inefficient right?

Does Shimano or Sram sponsor this kind of fixed-gear cycling?
We are a pretty small community which makes it hard to get big sponsorships.
