In his last book, Terry Pratchett wrote Death saying "You have left the world a better place than when you found it, and, if you ask me, no one could do better than that." I would say Clarissa and Jennifer certainly did well.

Am I crazy or didn't Jamie Oliver appear at the beginning of some of their shows? I am almost positive of that but it's been so long (before Naked Chef) I'm not sure. I've searched all over but there is no reference I can find of such and its bugging me!!😮

    • @karenb2617

@@deborahpaulin1188I know that producer Patricia Llewellyn was responsible for bringing both shows (this and Naked Chef) to TV. That's the only connection I've been able to find so far. No mention of Jamie having been on their show, not that I can find anyways...

@@deborahpaulin1188 I believe Jamie Oliver's first show was put into the slot 2FL had after Jennifer's sudden, unfortunate death ending the show. To go from them to him shows how stark the chasm between old and new Britain emerging under New Labour was. I was a teenager then, I have continued to watch 2FL ever since, along with a couple of my friends and we have often noted how 2FL were the best, along with Keith Floyd. They were all cultured, sophisticated and knowledgeable from international travel and friends but had never thought of abandoning traditional British food. Thanks to Clarissa in particular I was introduced to Robert May and Hannah Glasse: so much more interesting than Mrs Beaton and the late Victorian obsession with everything Escoffier. RIP Jennifer and Clarissa.

The wrapping of bread in cabbage leaves is used in a non conventional oven in order to help prevent the bread from burning. If the cabbage burns the ash is not harmful and helps aid digestion.
There are plenty of 18th century bread recipes requiring the wrapping in leaves.

The black "Brazilian" pot comes from the town where I live: Vitória, in the State of Espirito Santo (The Victory of the Holy Spirit), in Brazil. Can't get better than that. The pot is used for the only true "moqueca", the fish stew that is made elsewhere and in other kinds of pots is just called "peixada" The pot is blackened with the dye from brackwater trees. The ladies make a Portuguese stew in it.

its interetsing if you read clarissa's autobiography, she was of course sober through the filming of these episodes but, unexpectedly, it was jennifer who was doing all the drinking. According to clarissa. jennifer on one occaion at least managed to get through one whole bottle of vodka and was well into her second whilst still, if i recall correctly, driving her motorbike with clarissa in the sidecar. I am wondering what happened to the rest of that bottle she uses for the soup.

I haven't read Ms. Dickson-Wright's memoir (nor am I familiar with any of the other tittle-tattle about the show), but the anecdotes that she tells in the course of the series itself are clearly embellished if not, in some cases, actually madey-uppy. It's a part of her great charm, but there's no reason to take anything she says at face value. On the other hand, it wouldn't surprise me at all to learn that the two ladies didn't always get along. Ms. Paterson was famously temperamental and difficult as a cook (and sometime columnist) for the Spectator; Ms. Dickson-Wright never shows any clear sign of liking anybody (although she expresses opinions about the appearance of the men she encounters with somewhat tedious predictability). Reformed alcoholics can be terrible bores about drink and nobody who watches the programs could be in any doubt that Ms. Paterson enjoyed a drink. In the fourth series there are a few moments where she is clearly somewhat befuddled (though I don't think one could say she was really any the worse for it) -- I do wonder whether, by that time, she wasn't mixing alcohol and pain meds. In any case they were both wonderful ladies who are cherished even now, after they're gone.

That sounds like Verdi's Nabbuco..beautiful island of Jersey. My dad gave me an easy recipe for Jewish penicillin. I made it all the time until got sick of it. Lol. Feel like making it for the winter.
I always love the music with 2 FAT LADIES..their cooking, stories, singing and humor. Beautiful church choir.
