  • This experiment involves creating your own rain gauge, an instrument meteorologists use to measure rainfall. Follow along with meteorologist Kristina Pydynowski and you too can measure the rainfall in your own backyard! Adult supervision may be needed.
    Here's what you will need:
    - A clear empty plastic bottle or cylinder
    - scissors or knife
    - black permanent marker or pen
    - masking tape
    - measuring tape
Gather your materials. If using a plastic bottle, cut off top of bottle with scissors or knife and place upside down on top, them tape together. Tear a slice of tape and stick to your counter. Draw lines with measurements using measuring tape, for measuring the rain water. Add water to the bottle for your base reading, then tape vertically, lining up the zero-line to the edge of the water.
Place the gauge in a flat, open area outside away from trees or overhanging plants that could modify your results.
