It was always illegal, but no one ever called it out. They decided to clarify it in the rule book update so there was no misunderstanding about the illegality. ((That was per a discussion with the Chair of the Rules Committtee)).
@@BillFromAZno it was legal at the time, it has since become illegal. When Matt Bell did that it couldn't be called out.
@@JesseJ588 It was a grey area with the modification of the disc rules. It was arguably either way, since the disc itself wasn't being changed permanently, but it was no longer meeting the shape of the disc specifications. Which went into the approval process of the disc, so the shot was legalish. Basically the disc was approved, which is where the shape and specifications of the disc are regulated. Which is why the PDGA clarified the rule change that the disc must be in a saucer like shape.

I had a thumber jump in like that but it sliced through the chains. Only time in a raited round I've been close to getting an ace with an overhand.

Eagle's called forehand roller root jump ace is deserving too.
The move with the DGA special Steady Ed plastic putter Blowfly/II or Gumputt/driver is impossible to do now within the rules and there is a reason, that brand DGA, then one brand that only makes floppy silicone discs to not modify the disc shape when throwing unless disc happened to hit something that caused the disc to change shape beforehand on the course or a minor mistake in molding.

Yes, as long as that rule of discs needing to be in original shape when thrown is not taken too literally as in older discs that have this or discs that did not quite mold up correctly.

@@markmcgarity The disc is fine as long as it's shaped like a disc and not a ball. rule 813.01C5 (I paraphrased a tiny bit)
