In the Jane Honda show elliott smith plays...his sister in audience screams "because we love you" after he sings the line "give me one good reason not to do it". Definitely worth a watch if your into elliott. It is raw and he is interacting with the crowd.
I know I'm late to the video, but the line "Open your parachute and grab your gun, fall down like an omen, a setting sun," is a reference to heroin, 'parachute,' being what it's wrapped in, and 'gun' being the needle, and the following line being about nodding off after.
This whole album is just a beautifully orchestrated musical suicide note. Kings Crossing was it's masterpiece. It's crazy that he could so openly write and perform this stuff alongside such fantastically intricate music, really shows you how much music moved his life.
Elliot Smith is great. I listened to that XO about a million times. Sometimes the dark or depressing stuff hits a little too close, you know? Beautiful songs, tho. Thanks for sharing this.
I've watched you guys before but I never would have thought you liked Elliott Smith. He's my favorite artist and my biggest inspiration as well, so glad someone on RUclips is finally reacting to him. Don't mean to depress you more but the "because we love you" part is actual a live clip of his sister yelling it at a show when he played this song. Show him Southern Belle, Needle in the Hay, Miss Misery...it doesn't really matter, dude doesn't have a bad song.
One of my favorite artists that everybody sleeps on is Blind Melon. They’re known mostly for one song but they were so much better than that. Generally check out their album versions. I’d suggest 2x4, Mouthful of Cavities, Dumptruck, St. Andrew’s Fall, Galaxie, Toes Across the Floor
After repeating "Don't let me get carried away" twice, he switches to "Don't let me be carried away" -- a small change but it alters the entire meaning.
I love Elliott smith so much. I think he's the best artist there ever was and every album he made was near perfect. I'm not sure of this because this area has now been gentrified, but kings crossing was a junkie hangout spot in Portland. you should definitely react to more of his songs. my favorites are: Everybody cares everybody understands, oh well ok, wouldn't mama be proud, pretty (ugly before), memory lane, looking over my shoulder, and dancing on the highway.
I didn’t know that about the title, but it makes a lot of sense. At the same time, I feel like it could also apply to “crossing over” from life to death because a lot of his titles have a double meaning. That’s part of what makes his lyrics so great, they’re open to interpretation
I just hit play on this and got that like button as soon as I saw it. I'M SO EXCITED to see you watch one of my very favourite artists, and a sadly underappreciated one. October 2003 he died. I’ll never forget because it was a month after my dad. Saying an artist like him played “rock music” or was a “singer-songwriter” doesn’t do him justice. You can’t understand without really experiencing his art.
Dont know yall but clicked on this just expecting a regular react video but dude knows his stuff about elliott. Mad props. Going to subscribe just for that.

Hollywood I love Elliot Smith and "Songs From a Basement" miiiight be my favorite album. The song "Fond Farewell to a Friend" is fucking beautiful. Beautiful memories of the past, beautiful acknowledgement of the suck that is the present. I'm with you, dude. Elliot Smith has helped me deal with some feelings through a cathartic experience. I went through a big elliot faze. It got to the point where i would ask my girlfriend what she wanted to listen to and she would say, "i dont care. I just dont want to listen to a bunch of elliot Smith." If you like him try "radical face". He's a little main stream, but "citizen cope" "salvation" and "pablo Picasso" have amazing lyrics. Daniel Johnston was actually hospitalized for schizophrenia, i believe. His lyrics are haunting. SLINT is the best math rock band of all time, and all those guys were in high school. I prefer "spider land" but "tweez" was produced by steve albini of "big black" and "shellac". He's also the greatest musical engineer that ever lived. Bands come to his studio in Chicago from all over the world. He only records in analog.
i don't particularly like reaction videos, but it's nice to see an elliott one :) + this is my favourite song by him too !! (another edit: i can tell he means alot to you from your reactions, (and the tattoo!) it's really sweet < 3)
The easter egg can be heard in a live version where it is said that Elliott's family is shouting the "cos' we love you"... Don't know if that was before or after the recording.
Holy SHIIIIIT how did I miss this?! You boys are eclectic. Also have been wondering if you guys have any music released online or otherwise that I could check out, thnx
Also I have OXOX tattooed on my left hand’s knuckles so when I play guitar it reads XoXo. This was Elliott’s “I’m fucked so I’m gonna say what’s up song.” He literally pulled out his guts in this song. Whew. Heavy shit.
This is a year old but I'm not seeing it in the comments. King's Crossing was a shady place in town near where he lived that happened to be a good location to find certain things
I believe I read somewhere that Kings Crossing was the name of a neighborhood or apt complex where he went to score. The gun in the song is a syringe. Could be wrong but I believe the parachute is a bag of dope. The allusion to a setting sun probably comes from the Neil Young line "Every junkie's like a setting sun." He was self-aware enough to know he was at the end if he kept using. I always interpreted "Give me one good reason not to do it" as a plea to see if someone could convince him to stop. Or he may have been talking to himself there, too. This song was re-worked and re-written from the time he was a teenager. There are a few alternate versions out there, and some that haven't seen the light of day but hopefully will one day. The earliest known one: ruclips.net/video/wvA1ApFESRc/видео.html
From my extensive reading about this tragic genius, he had a taste for a wide variety of drugs, plus drank a lot, so I alsays assumed the skinny Santa and the rich chick were both very good (or bad) friends of his... And I always took the last line as referring to the morgue. But what I wanted to say is many years ago, when in a very dark period of my life, my friend Michael, a dude who was so smart, so wise, with so much depth, plus handsome and charming and talented, people were magnetically drawn to him (we used to call him a 'grinding Christ figure' cos he was also a crazy good skateboarder), turned me on to 'From a Basement.." actually gave me his CD. I played it pretty much non-stop for a week, after which i said to Michael that I was blown away by this guy, but somebody should keep an eye on him, cos I get the feeling he's about to off himself... That's when Michael tole me that he'd killed himself after laying down his primary tracks for the album, which was in fact finished posthumously. Now, I am not ashamed to admit, I get a bit choked up every time I listen this album, and sometimes totally end up sobbing.. Btw, not loag after that last interaction with Michael, he took a bad fall while boarding, and suffered very severe brain damage, and while he was still able to walk, and sort of speak, the light was gone from his eyes. Damn. Just writing about this, even after so many years, it still hits hard. Great Video guys, this is my first time watching your channel, and it will NOT be my last! From Tucson, Peace y'all...
It’s about a rehab clink, and trying to go straight. The line is just dead men talk to pretty nurses. But this is the place that time reverses, dead man talking to the pretty nurses. When your deep in to drugs you look shit and your wasting away. When you start getting clean it’s like time reverse.
Was trying to learn Kings Crossing(pretty sure I already know it) and found this. I play alt-country music and my favorite artist is Elliott Smith. He taught me guitar by covering his songs and got me through some rough times as well. He was also the greatest singer/songwriter of his generation (born in ‘69) and will probably be of mine as well (‘88) “Cause we love you!” Chiba did that shit! This song is one of his more literal which is saying something, especially if you’ve rode that horse if you know what I mean.
@@Hollywood6IX i agree. Sometimes I think it wasn’t the 1,500$ of speedball he was doing everyday and Dreamworks records rlly was out to get him and his computer like he said. Imagine all the money a studio could make if they had his songs and not him. Turn anyone off his songs into a pop song and you’ve got a hands down, without a doubt, for sure top 10# hit. Obviously it was the speedball but makes one wonder. 🤔
@@Hollywood6IX it’s depend. Right now I’d have to say “Go By” from the New Moon album. It’s the perfect life imaging art song I’ve ever heard. The chord progression and melody starts off smooth but gets higher and higher and higher ‘till it comes crashing doing. Just perfection. “New Disaster” is also great. I think it has all the elements of E.S.’s discography. The production of Either/Or with the progression of Xo/Figure 8. If I had to go with one, it’s “Go By” orrrr an actual cover of the school house rock song “Figure 8” he did. It’s haunting and beautiful.
the part of the song where he says “give me one good reason not to do it” and then you hear a voice in the background that sys “because we love you”, thats his family recording that after he died.
Yo you guys should react to “floating in the forth”- frightened rabbit. Story of Scott Hutchison is like the Scottish version of Elliot smith and he was one of the best Scottish song writers of all time.
3:40 No Hollywood, the comparison is entirely appropriate and quite fitting. I've no doubt the number of people that value and respect, dare I say cherish, the music of Trent Reznor and/or Devin Townsend, much in the same way that you do for Elliot Smith's music, could be described as lacking in any way
According to GeniusLyrics annotations, King’s Crossing is a little grove in the rose garden of Portland, Oregon where drug junkies and dealers are/were often present. Elliott Smith moved there with his parents when he was 14, and that's where he first experimented with drugs and alcohol. I hope that helps you understand this song better :)
Kings crossing is a place in Portland where junkies were getting together to do drugs. That's where title comes from, but you can also take it metaphorically, as a crossing to another world -becoming dead or high on heroin...
Key point to Elliott’s death - it was two stab wounds that penetrated the heart. The Gf’s story is that when she came out of the bathroom the knife was in his chest. She PULLED IT OUT. The paramedics said he could’ve been saved had she not. And when you bf or gf has a knife sticking out of their chest, who’s first reaction is to grip the handle and pull hard to get it out? We’ll never know but the autopsy did not rule it a suicide, they ruled it inconclusive.
In the Jane Honda show elliott smith plays...his sister in audience screams "because we love you" after he sings the line "give me one good reason not to do it". Definitely worth a watch if your into elliott. It is raw and he is interacting with the crowd.

Also the line "a setting sun" is a reference to the Neil Young song (The needle and the damage done) "every junkie's like a setting sun"

Elliot smith is one of Hollywood's favorite artists. People dont give him the credit he deserves
What's ur favorite Elliott smith song
@@Hollywood6IX yours?
Cire - Adrenological ... unbelievable band!!!! Tool Fans must know!!!!!!
reminds me of Supertramp in basic sound. It has a wholesome honest quality.
Waltz #1, Can't Make A Sound, Pretty (Ugly Before), New Disaster, Going Nowhere- My top 5 favorite Elliott songs.
The greatest song ever by the best there ever was.
Need more Elliot smith
remember the first time you listened to elliot? Damn
love this vid
Shit goes harddddd
Great, thanks!
A rare lyrical genius from an era overrun with lightweights.
your friend's reaction whe you showed him you tattoo was like
oh yeah you have that , let's keep seeing the video
the part of the song where he says “give me one good reason not to do it” and then you hear a voice in the background that sys “because we love you”, thats his family recording that after he died.
I did not know that. Wow.
It also happened in a live show. His girlfriend yelled that out while he was asking the crowd why they even listen to his music
Hell yeah smoking inside. You’re my hero.
I've no doubt the number of people that value and respect, dare I say cherish, the music of Trent Reznor and/or Devin Townsend, much in the same way that you do for Elliot Smith's music, could be described as lacking in any way
Will do my friend...All are great artist.
One of my favorite artists of all time. Seems to be the same for one of you... Very emotionally intense song.
That’s a hard af tattoo and a good lyrical choice
Kings crossing is a place in Portland where junkies were getting together to do drugs. That's where title comes from, but you can also take it metaphorically, as a crossing to another world -becoming dead or high on heroin...
Check out the stuff he did when he was in Heatmeiser
For those who aren't aware of Smith's music, he was truly one of the greatest songwriters of his generation and it isn't even close.
fuck yes.
I subscribed for the cigs.
More Elliott Smith! Please? 🥺💜
I completely thought u were gonna say the easter egg lyric was the " because i took my own insides out"
awesome vid 👍
Elliott Smith is the best. Ben Folds wrote a beautiful song about Elliott called Late. Check it out.
