I've got a ton of sets of these mirrors, aftermarket and not and this is really helpful because now I can see inside and replace a broken mirror or reattach, solder wires that are just not doing what I want them to do.
Just a minor note, the 2015 mirror is apparently different. The "mirror" side plastic piece (3:37; lower tow mirror) does not fit through the outer frame without removing the lower mirror mount. There is a change in the design apparently. To remove that center bolt takes a 4mm socket.
Thanks for the great detailed video. I was able to reference and replace the ambient temp sensor that’s in my 16’ KR passenger mirror. I’m debating trying to find the motor parts to replace for my power fold and telescope. Plus I have a motor out for the glass itself. Ford wants over $2,500 foot a new set on my truck (power everything and heat) and i haven’t found anyone aftermarket that makes the mirrors with all those options together. Thank you again for your time!
I'm glad my video was helpful! That's why I make them. I'd check salvage yards for even broken mirrors to get the parts you need. $2,500 for a new set is robbery.
Does anyone know if the cap cover can be removed on all of the F250 after market towing light assemblies? I need to buy a cheaper assembly, non motorized and take only the bottom rear plastic housing from it. My black housing got hit and I want to replace it. But I want to take the white cover cap off my busted broken housing and put it on a new housing. But I don't know before buying one that if the cover cap can be removed on a new non-motorized one. I want to buy the least expensive assembly to do this repair. I would hate to buy one, then discover the cap can't be removed and replaced.
Great video, thanks. I have power folding/telescoping version. Passenger side folds only 1/4 of the way. Do you know where to get good info (dwgs, pics, videos) in order to understand what's going on and fix it?
I don't. I've never taken one of those apart either. I'd have to assume that it's gonna come apart the same though. Once you're in there the differences should be pretty obvious, and probably pretty simple.
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel Thank you for reply. So far I know that there are two motors per mirror. Each arm has small motor with set of gears, and if only one stops working whole mirror will not fold/unfold. To get to this motors requires disassembling entire mirror. Lots of work.
I imagine it does somehow, but I've never tried to take the hinge apart. It's been a while since I've opened up one of these mirrors so I unfortunately don't even have any recommendations haha. The only thing I can suggest is watch the video and tear yours apart and see what you can figure out in there. It's not like you're out anything if you mess something up in the process. If you do try to figure it out, I'd like to know what you find. I always like to learn something new.
My Mirror cap took a hit from a tree branch and I now have a circular hole on that top panel. Is it possible to just replace that cap or would I need an entirely new housing? I can't seem to fin da clear answer. Would be ashamed to replace the entire thing since it's otherwise functional.
On mine I don't have any lights or anything on the front. It's a 2 peice mirror with turn signal light strip at the bottom. I'm clueless how to get the mirror off so I can cha get the light strip.
I just had to replace the whole mirror because my wife folded then in while towing on the freeway and I panicked and pushed the driver mirror back out when it wouldn't fold out on its own. It was $1100 for the drivers side power fold telescoping heated mirror 🤦 Of course Ford does not sell the $3 nylon gear that got stripped, so I had to buy the whole mirror.
Thanks for the video! While you were digging around in there did you come across the ambient air temperature sensor? I need to replace mine, but I haven't been able to locate it. Lots of info out there says its in the passenger mirror, but I haven't seen a video that shows it. Thanks!
@@gatekeepersgarage Thanks for the reply. I’ve done a bunch of digging on this. Apparently after 2010 or so they moved the ambient air temperature sensor to the passenger mirror. I saw one with my own two eyes on a 2011 lariat. However, my truck is Ford fleet truck. Apparently they don’t have ambient air temperature sensors, I believe they use MAFS data along with other sensors to get the air temp. I just ordered a new MAFS, fingers crossed. Thanks for the info!
So they are power telescope I assume? Something in the gears might be broken. The only advice I can give you is to open them up and see what's going on.
Do you by chance know if that outer shell is the same on all mirror options? I have full power mirrors with power telescoping, mines broken pretty bad on just the back plate, was hoping to order the cheapest mirror new and just swap the internals since the full mirror is almost $800 compared to a cheaper manual one.
As far as I know it's the same for all 08-16 mirrors. I won't promise that but I'd have to imagine it's the same. If it were me, I'd take the gamble. Worst case you just resell it. I can't imagine Ford would make that big of a change just based on special options.
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel Thats what my thought was, I figure its all one shell and only the internals differ since it would cost more to have multiple variations. And true I could sell or even return it if I dont mangle it up lol. Thanks brotha
See my video at justagaragehack. I had the same question so I bought the aftermarket and was able to keep my power fold and telescope. Made a video about it.
@yamahaMXrider125 Im in the same boat as you. I want to be able to swap my stuff in all the power folding to this 90$ amazon one i got. Were You able to do it?
I'm sure someone on Ebay or Facebook Marketplace would eventually. You might have better luck selling them individually, since I would imagine that most people buying the old style are only doing it to replace a broken one, not wanting to go through the work of upgrading.
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel Yep lol. It’s a 99’ so maybe that had something to do with it. Just going to cut a replacement from an old picture frame then spray paint it with mirror finish. I’m in the process of re wrapping them with vinyl
@@darkhorseautoanddiesel It came off. 3 clips around the mirror in a triangle form. I’m not sure what year tow mirrors though. They look similar to the one you did in this vid. But yeah… Lesson learned. Maybe I should have used wd40 first seeing all the rust inside of the light housing. Thx for the response also!

Hey how did you remove the rail? Or how did you separate them? Thanks
The rail that allows it to telescope? A lot of lubrication, a dead blow hammer, and patience.

I hope you see this, my mirror has the ball joint type of thing holding the bottom mirror on, do you know how to get it off?
I would imagine just carefully pop it off, but I'm not 100% sure. Never took one apart that was like that.

Yours sound like they are totally different than these.
Great Video by the way! Your disassembly was extremely helpful for my mirror. Did you grease the tracks, and if you did, what did you use?
i wonder is there a motor for the folding mirror part how many motors does that mirror has ?
Mine is not power folding or power telescoping, so it's missing those 2 motors. The glass adjustment is 2 motors.

Those are usually mounted in the front grille area. Definitely not in one of these mirrors.

That's good to know. I was unaware of the change.
Ambient sensor is on the lower edge of mirror housing, at the outer corner
Very good video, how to replace the wire?
Thank you. Which wire are you trying to replace?
Mine will fold on my 2010 , but will Not extend out to tow. What may be wrong. I can hear them trying to make noise

@Dark Horse Auto and Diesel Yes they are. You can hear and feel them making noise, but don't move out. Only had truck about 6 months.
Whay do you mean by exercising them regularly?
Moving them in and out.

I’m assuming your mirror was manual pull out right? Or was your mirror power everything? Need to do the same with mine but they’re power telescope
These are manual telescope. I imagine the procedure is the same for most of it.
Any idea where I can get the telescoping motor?
I'd have to say either a dealer or a junk yard. Might be able to find it on ebay or amazon.
If all your doing is changing the light you can get at it with just a screwdriver without taking the mirror off
