An artist must suffer for their art, that's why its called a "Pain-ting"
Forgot where the quote came from

@@OtherwiseUknownMonkey nah I remember it from like teen sitcom

i like that his clothes are dull and somewhat dirty-looking: not only it conveys the lack of care he has for his appearance (any shut-in artist can relate lmao), it also symbolizes his suppressed nature once you compare them to the vibrant colour of his spells
If he was dressed in modern times, he would 100% be wearing scoffed black pants, a black shirt with a small band logo and black shoes
@@schaakakon9473 the shirt would also have stains of unknown origin and the pants would be at least 5 years old
@@bectip2229 *Everything* has stains of unknown origin! And you will never, ever get them out no matter how much or what kind of cleaning solution you use!
I haven’t really seen a lot of Hwei’s lore but I like his event with Jhin. Hopefully we’ll see more of those in the future like Nasus vs Renekton, Pantheon vs Aatrox or Lewis vs Rek’Sai
Thankfully its confirmed that this is coming next season!
Who in the 9 hells is Lewis?
@@furo6340 kassadins real name
@@furo6340 belveth autocorrected.
now if u read the lore.
Bro as a Lewis main ive been waiting to see some1 else mention him. Havent seen him played in years
Nicky, the temple was Jhin's first "artwork" since being broken out of prison, legit nobody knew who he was
Also dude wear a mask, right?
I think Hwei's clothing also are supposed to contrast with Jhin, they both have purple, but Jhin's cloth looks fancier, like he's more vain. Jhin is a egotistical and prideful artist, while Hwei is quite literally a humble monk. Jhin has gold ornaments and contraptions, Hwei only has very delicate fabrics. Jhin is always in the center stage of his performances, he wants the recognition, the "applause", Hwei is more "the art speaks for itself, the body is only the medium it speaks through". Also, Jhin has a patron, Hwei is quite literally the poor starving artist with no home.
I like Hwei's looks! It's like a "realistic" Runeterra version of the freelance artist: depressed, sleep-deprived, malnourished, so busy/commited to the craft he can't even manage to be angry when given The Sad Backstory, and wearing the ionian version of a tracksuit. Also is Vitamin D deficient
damn spitting facts there
His lack of anger always seemed to me to be more trauma-related than a matter of being busy or fatigued. On the day that Jhin did the Big Destroy, it came as such a surprise to Hwei and things happened so quickly that he couldn't understand what was happening.
Hwei felt sadness, anger, loss, but also perhaps gratitude and happiness at Jhin destroying his 'cage', contradictions that maybe Hwei felt he wasn't 'allowed' to feel. That's how I interpret Hwei's abilities: they're him trying to process a whole glut of emotions in the aftermath of Jhin's destruction, anchored to that point in his past and yet irreparably colouring his perception of the world and himself as he tries to move on.
Perhaps the reason Hwei is depressed isn't because he's sad, but because his emotions are so intense that he can't let himself feel them all at once or else it would break him. His art is so focused on singular themes as a way of compartmentalising emotions and memories, letting him re-experience and deal with them one by one, reducing the emotional burden bit by bit so he can slowly make his way back to a place where his emotions are less heavy, less scary.
I really like the idea of Hwei's art as therapy. It makes a lot of sense to me.
I said this on the Skin Spotlight video showcasing the champion and I'll say it here: I hope Hwei gets a Bob Ross themed skin. Legendary that gets him more optimistic lines, appreciating the art he makes and shares. Ivern could participate in the skinline as the lonely tree who needed a friend.
This is honestly a beautifull idea.
nothing infuriates me more than the fact that rito wont listen to community skin ideas like this cuz they have to give us more pool party skins
@@IkSaRbara cosplay star gardian urgot
@@JDReC100 if you look into it they weren't even really happy with that skin in the community. The original skin was different.
I like the emo trio lol. Vex being angry, Hwei being sadge and Aphelios being the quiet kid lmao
Dont forget zed and/or kayn who are trying too hard
theyre not emo, theyre just absolute edgelords@@meeeberperson
I feel like Im going insane because I think why jhin and hwei aren't just a revenge story is because they have almost a Hannibal/will Graham relationship
It's toxic but jhin unlocked hwei and sees him as an equal (hwei challenges jhins view of art and jhin challenges hweis morality and makes him push the boundaries that hwei was kinda reluctant to unlock only hiding his fascination in the dark)
Yes, I'd say that's a lot more accurate than mere revenge. In his voice lines, Hwei has a very love/hate relationship with Jhin: Hwei recognises Jhin both as the source of extreme violence and pain in his life, but also as the catalyst that allowed him and his art to break free from tradition and expectation to become more true to himself and his experience.
In the voice lines that trigger when Hwei slays Jhin, he isn't angry or vengeful, but rather he sounds like he wants Jhin to understand what he's been through and how Jhin helped him to grow (not that this would happen because Jhin is 100% a psychopath, but still).
Jhin and Hwei didn't fight, Jhin just noticed that Hwei was holding back and confronted him on it. Hwei then showed him what he was hiding, it was a vulnerable moment, not a violent one.
I gotta feeling that when Jhin went into the temple, he probably didn’t have his traditional outfit or had a different mask. Something that didn’t make him super obvious
Maybe he went without his mask. Remember that he has a common face under his mask
It may have been before Jhin was infamous, Hwei isn't exactly young (early to mid 30s.) And it's unclear how old he and Jhin were when they met, the events between them easily could have happened a decade or more ago.
I think Hwei's sunken cheeks and lanky frame reflects the phrase "starving artist". Whether that was done purposefully or not is to be determined xD
My one fear is that Riot will take the wrong idea from Hwei's winrate and turn him into the next K'Sante even though he was obviously designed with a high skill floor and next season's items in mind.
You say that it's surprising how Hwei wasn't in the boy band in the end card, do you remember the backlash Riot got last time they coincided a champion's release with a music video? I really don't think Riot wants to have another Seraphine situation so they played it safe and if Heartsteel gets a second go he's 100% going to be a part of it, they probably also didn't want Hwei's story to be overshadowed by the boy band stuff either.
Ugh it’s a shame Naafiri and Briar didn’t get any stories but I’m happy Hwei got one.
I KNOW BRIAR SHORT STORY COULDVE BEEN SOO GOOD
I know it’s present in almost every single one of these casual champ reviews but I love the discussion being interrupted by what’s happening in the game. It’s funny beyond belief for some reason.
I dont get people calling this champion complicated, it's actually desgned to be really simple to understand.
q- dmg (normal, artillery, waveclear)
w- utility (speed, shield, mana)
e- cc (fear, root, displacement)
That's pretty much it, obviously there's more depth to it but it's not hard to understand
He has a normal Mage Kit, but has access to one of 3 Main Ability Options. Combos Trees are possible, but every Q-W-E Share the cooldown Respectivly. Its not to agonizing as it feels at first. Everything is about Number 3, Edgelords are always Welcome for me and as someone who loves Art and Sound Design, am I very satisfied with him!
i feel like saying he has 9 abilities is super missleading
he has 3 abilities but each ability can be cast in a different way,
utility kinda drives away from that by giving different efects but it's not hard to remember, speedzone nami buff and shield lol
If he actually had access to all 3 Qs, Ws and Es at the same time, he would actually be complicated, and also way cooler than he is right now. Rn his entire depth is just choosing which E to combo into which Q and then follow up with WE to regain some mana and do some followup damage
And then you just spam Qs until your other abilities come off cooldown
@@somo4227 almost like how vicktor augments could have been. Choose between dif augment items as a permanent change in how his abilities work the rest of the game. but instead he just has it as part of his kit instead of as an ability upgrade like so many other champs have
honestly yeah. i watched a quick video on some extremely basic concepts as to how he's played (q/e for waveclear and w/e for mana regain, fish for e/x abilities and take advantage of what you get) and then branched from that into actually playing him somewhat proficiently. he's a LOT of fun and i honestly haven't had as much fun playing league as i have playing him
it's beyond satisfying to be able to have a plan in mind and seamlessly execute it, even while under pressure. his kit just.. flows really well from ability to ability. like, his most basic combo is e-q-q-q lmao
I actually find him surprisingly simple to play. Sure I still need to get used to him and sometimes I have a brain fart and mess up my inputs but he really isn't that difficult.
I think what helps is that all of his abilities are very straight forward. He doesn't have a dash or cooldown resets or weird overcomplicated passives, just a wide array of simple abilities with different uses. Riot showed a surprising amount of restraint here.
exactly, i think they did a good job in keeping his design simply while fitting the theme and giving you a lot of variety in which spells to choose
they wanted to make an artillery mage, and they mage an artillery mage.
Riot did a pretty good job on this one
Yeah, at first I heard that "Oh League got Invoker!" and went "Oh no, that won't go well there". But nah, he's pretty simple, each color is a type of spell, go nuts. Good execution for League's ecosystem.
Iirc Jhin was never revealed as the golden demon to the public bc it would cause unrest that an ionian did it instead of a demon.
Also Hwei is looking for Jhin, wanting answers not just going out helping people.
I mean, "color story" for the artist champ. I think it was a necessity this time around
Being honest, gameplay-wise I would pretty easily adjust to Hwei due to having playing Ninja in Final Fantasy 14.
His kit is pretty much Mudras, but trading the Bunny of Shame if you mess up on FF14 for being frustrated on League... which is part of the course.
thats the exact comparison id made to my friends lol, hes super simple if youve played any game with more than three buttons for combos
My ass that played dmc5
Hwei trusted Jhin. Now Ionians are dead.
The reason the temple would "welcome a serial murderer" is because Khada Jhin is an alias and he wears a mask. Take off the mask and drop the stage name, and suddenly Jhin is just an eccentric guy. *That* is who they allowed to stay with them.
I kinda like his colors being muted, makes me think how it is easy to see him in the middle of his abilities , since it's such a contrast.
Ive decided Hwei and Jhin are now classified as "Number Champions"
From the start, I interpreted all the gold and demon hints as references to Jhin because he's "The Golden Demon". And I'm honestly glad they gave Hwei proper paint magic, as was teased since the very first teaser and confirmed during champion roadmaps, instead of suddenly tying those powers to a demon. I like demons, but I prefer this a lot more and it's what I got hyped for, so I would have felt cheated if it turned out to be just demon power
Personally, I like all aspects of Hwei's character. His gameplay feels complex and interesting (a lot like his character's personality/emotions). His clothing and walk animation portray his apathetic emptiness very well. His color scheme also conveys his character well, with the only bright part of his character being his paint smear hovering behind him, the volatile and potentially dangerous part of him that he has to decide between containing it for the sake of others, or becoming similar to Jhin and unleashing his creativity at the expense of others. I also love difficult-to-play control mages like Viktor and Azir, so adding Hwei to that line-up is really nice.
Overall, he feels engaging and coherent in gameplay, lore, and design, which makes him the first new character that I've really wanted to play in a long time.
It would be a fantastic character plot twist if Hwei wasnt to rival Jhin, but instead to join him. If he at all felt beauty in seing his temple in flames, it would already make sense for him to join Jhin, as they have similar interests in art. Maybe if Hwei joined Jhin he would show him his full potential, and then Jhin would show him the dark side of it. But maybe instead of being tempted to join the dark side like Jhin, he would remain neutral. Not being a nice guy, but also not a bad guy.
Nahhh the Gwen denial is insane
I personaly very like his design. The dull color, with a peak a vibrant orange and red is selling the idea that he is moody but with a wild imagination
The only problem i have with Hwei is that while i think its cool each of his 3 colors and skills are all themed similarly, i feel Riot was too scared of making Hwei more complex by trying some bigger differences between his skills combinations.
the twink mage is alive and real
If the new champion is this complex, imagin the future champs that will come later (Asside from the skarner rework)
i wouldnt even call him complex, he just has more very basic abilities. champions like nidalee and jayce have 8 themselves, he just has 2 more and can only use 4 at a time. not that different. compare him to invoker, his counterpart in dota 2 and you will be thankful for the way he is. (also i think hes great and very fun to play)
@@Sparkofshurima from what i see, invoker has three components for his spells, and none of them share a cooldown. then again, it seems like every DOTA 2 hero is rather insane compared to league champs
@@Sparkofshurima yeah, it isnt too bad for an "advanced mage. Its prolly still harder to play the old Asol and worry about hitting your orbs by keeping distance... and there are plenty of other advanced mechanics. This one surely has good combos but def is just a ranged mage and can be played alot like a xerath with a different ult
@@Underworlder5 you have to just know the combinations of his spells. its very hard for new players. i havent played dota in forever so i hope im not saying anything wrong here but i just like hwei way more.
@@Underworlder5 Dota2's heroes are pretty focused on calculare the most efficient time to use that Q ability that cost you half of your mana and 30s cooldown. Yup, their normal abilities can be as crazy as League's ult.
Do you know the Hwei to my heart??
So yeah actually I was on my way there and I wanted to check if it was the first or the second left after the stomach 🤔
I’m on holiday rn but I cannot wait to play Hwei. Looks so interesting to learn and I bet mastering him will look really cool
The dull colors on his clothes remind me of picasso's blue period. A period when picasso focused on colder duller colors to encompass sorrow.
I like his colors the most from his outfit! Looking dull is exactly what is going on in his head and if he looked all uptight and slick it would be wierd. The overall green color he has really reminds me of the color that you get as a result of cleaning your brushes in a rug, and to a champion all about paint its super nice!
Also colors mashed up together quite chaotically symbolizes that he doesnt know how to proceed out of the "paths" laid in front of him, which is his main struggle, the only solid color he has is golden that is the main color of his ultimate, foreshadowing (I hope) that he wont have fullfilment out of picking a path, the strengh in art is that it can makes us feel a lot of different things and one type of art will never be above another, its all about what Hwei feels the need to create. Once he realizes that he can not be such a mess. Or maybe an azakana is feeding on his negativity and once he deals with them he will have closure. Idk its too early to tell.
So did the entire community gaslight itself into thinking this guy was going to be the next Ur-Demon?
Yeah, because the rioters said something like he is a depress person and use ink, so many of us deduct that he carries the Demon of the sadness. Also, in that time we get Nilah... I know, we get excited😅.
He's a painter. He had to have color story🎨
Damn if you did do Gwen this week I could've submitted some fan art sadge
its next week so get to working
"That doesn't make sense because that means they let a rampant serial murderer stay at their house" Ok fair point Nicky however counterpoint, The Catholic church actively helped high level Nazi's escape Germany in WW2 after Berlin fell so it's not like it's out of the realm of realism that they knew who Jhin was
Jhin & Hwei Bot lane works way better than you would expect. Honestly, hwei is a better sup than most sups, just build mana and a shit ton of haste and give The fast more speed and shields or CC the hell out of everybody. Is seriously good.
Nicky boi, Jhin wears a mask, like, noone knows who jhin is, what do you meannnnn
We as the audience don't even know what Jhin looks like, unless he is wearing his serial killer outfit, like if I showed off a fanart of Jhin without his mask it would just be some guy
Edit, also this is facts, I've played yone, missed ult, missed q, missed e, somehow, and still got a kill with just autos and ignite
I love to play Aphelios and Hwei is like an AP aphelios I can play with. So I only played him for three games but I did pretty well and it felt great
As a bronze player queing with my silver friend, we have been constantly matched with plat or emerald so I fell that 0:15
Love Hwei honestly. He's a real swiss army knife champion and I think that makes him unique. He can do anything and unlike certain other 'high skill' champions *CoughAkshanCough* he isn't made to fit every situation just because one of his 3 ability's multiple passives fixes it. He's an honest to goodness SKILL BASED CHARACTER!
I still find it weird for an artist character to have individual spells to be so... uninspired
about Jhin, people know of the golden demon of Ionïa, but who actually know's of Jhin ? The killer named the golden Demon was captured, and bring to justice by shen and Zed Master, and this cabale of Ionïa use him has a weapon againt's Noxian, but does the populace actually KNOW his face of his appareance ?
Even Akali, Shen'w former apprentice working DIRECTLY under him, had no idea who he was or what it meant.
hes really not overcomplicated especially if compared to invoker who he was shamelessly ripped off of
Honestly, I thought he would have more base damage in his kit and since his QE and EE are pretty big spells, I wanted to try to play him as a control mage, but then I deal almost no damage and I still have pretty lacklustre spells if I'm not ahead. I honestly think that unless new items are going to change that about him, I dunno if I will be playing Hwei as I thought I was going to.
Ma boy nicky boy playin ma boy hwei in this BOYISH day
Fr home boy
nah boy cause when my boy hwei play he lowk play like the 🐐
Does anyone feel like his abilities actually pair well with their other spellbook counterpart?
Like... his EQ and QQ are good for trading and retrieving, EW helps land QW and EE lines up QE. im not tripping am i ? 😭
I dont even play ranked and I'm constantly going against emerald players. while that's annoying, what's more annoying is when my mid laner is level 34, new to the game, and first timing a champion.
I really expected Nicky to comment on the fact that we finally have a new artillery mage after nearly 10 years xD
kayn doesn't get skins? He already has 2 legendaries xD.
at 14:50 i noticed a bug i think, you aimed QE and your QQ came out in the opposite direction, had this happen to me but thought i had a brainfart or something
I'm a simple man: I see a champion with supportive abilities, support brain wants to play them no matter how difficult they are.
I'd actually be really happy if support Hwei is good because support honestly feels like a really easy role in terms of champs. Sure we have complicated supports like Rell or Renata but even then it still boils down to "hit CC button, hit shield button, hit ult, go crazy go stupid." I hope support Hwei actually has some playmaking potential outside of hitting CC.
He is so fun to play. And the mixmatching of abilities is awesome. But he still feels underpowered
Personally I like his design as his whole story is someone who is both aware and scared of his power. He hasn’t fully embraced it yet so it works but I do wish he had a splash of colour here and there
At least for me, the dull color attire hwei has is pretty much what monks have outside of their traditional robes, cause it’s supposed to be dull it’s supposed to be simple cause it’s all hwei knows growing up, and i even think he dyed his clothes those new colors cause he wants to move up from his old life
Basically from his dull one basic color clothing to now somewhat a more lively clothing, he still cant fully escape his old ways of teachings but theres an effort, and its shown through his clothes that he’s slowly living his true potential
Invoker in Dota 1 had 27 spells.
In Dota 2 he now has 10 spells.
No old invoker had 27 spells was immediately removed after a few months, he was then reworked and added back in 2008 with his 10 spells.
Hwei is high skill cap but probably far easier then aphel or azir. I think hwei is in an OK spot if not to squishy, but i think he'll be the most popular artillery mage that just gets played support like velkoz and xerath, mostly because his kit is funner
Hwei is actually Brassius from Pokémon SV and you can't say otherwise
Ah yes invoker my favourite character in Dota 2
I apparently bought Hwei right after his release but, because of irl stuff, never really had the time, energy or motivation to try him out.
Now almost a year later I downloaded league on a new PC to try out Swarm, remembered I had Hwei, decided to try his spells out in the practice mode, for some reason think "his Q's kinda remind me of Vel'koz" (who I mained for a while), and then proceed to actually have fun learning him in regular PvP games.
I haven't had this much fun actually learning a sorta newly released champion since Jhin, and that's right after taking a over half year long break from LoL.
How.
Shoutout to emos and femboys (me)
Ok, but INK SHADOW should be his legendary in the future
I don't care about people complaining about his looking or saying that his abilities are copy/past from others. I never had so much fun playing a lol champion before. He is amazing, so many options and possibilities of gameplay. Maybe because i'm also a MMORPG player, so i'm used to have many skills to use. Playing with Hwei feels like playing with a mage from world of warcraft. I loved it.
7:40 the demon hinting could be hinting at Jhin since he's called "the Golden Demon", and was thought to be one for a while.
I'm not big into league, my friends shoved me into its lore department to get me away from spoiling myself in ffxiv (lol) so I went through the champions list and my eye, for some reason, caught Hwei. Yes, the artist. I am one as well, I swear its never intentional but my friends notice its a pattern.
I went to go look for videos and watched this one while drawing. And I loved it! I love the energy you give, the gameplay to glance to in the background, its all very nice.
All of this to say, I thuroughly enjoyed the video. Thank you very much!
Personally, I find Hwei to be reliant on Jhin to be interesting, at least currently. He feels passive and lacking defined motive IMO. Granted, this is cause league is full of characters with really strong and exaggerated choices... I'm holding out for further lore cause this neutrality in the character can go PLACES if they push that far enough.

Hate to be that guy but... Hwei is the only vharacter with 10 abilities Nidalee, Elise and Jayce have 7 (8 if you count turning into each specific form as 2 instead of 1 that switches forms). Sorry Nicky youve failed at basic math
I kinda wanna see it turn into a Palpatine/Vader relationship. I think that would be fun for Hwei and Jhin
3:42 No one outside of Shen, Zed, The Maker and i presuma Akali and Kayn know the identity of who the golden demon was. It is confirmed that it was never even revealed to the general public that Jhin was a human. The general population believes that Jhin was a demon who was destroyed or otherwise pacified when in reality he was just inprisoned.
Jhin is also a master of disguise (on an old Q&A board i believe it was even confirmed that he can manipulate his facial structure) so he could have just went there in disguise and told them that he was a totally different guy named Jhin.
While having a new "high-skill" champ is great, im disappointed they didnt take a more artistic approach to the skills. My guy is a painter and they still couldnt come up with SOME unique abilities?
4:50
"I'm losing....to a support..."
me, an ADC main: hi Nicky welcome to my life for the past like 5+ years :D
I can’t remember the exact source, but I remember learning once that the name Khada Jhin translates to Golden Demon (I can’t remember which language is being translated from). So, it wasn’t a relationship to a literal demon, but Hwei does have a connection to the Golden Demon. It’s a bit of a cop out, but could be interesting to see how Zed and Shen interact with Hwei in future lore.
His clothing is just so weak, especially the inside part where it's just 1 flat frabic of yellow, at least make it messy, makes some dye accidentally splash onto it to form a pattern, I get that it is supposed to be "non vibrant to contrast his inks" but no this is just lazy and weak design that doesn't tell us anything about him other than the cloths just being bland, you can have a bland greyed out clothing while showing personality trait, like hell! Mixed up colours would become a dirty brown which can show 1. how he is so devoted into painting that he doesn't care or realise his clothes a mess 2. Shows that he practiced and draw so much that so many colours stacked on it it becomes the dirty brown
14:52 I'm sorry what in the spaghetti code fuck happened here???? the QQ could not have gone more fucking backwards from where Nicky was aiming, I would've been malding
Ah yes the Ink Man Twink Man
Quickplay is really disappointing. Blindpick was so much faster to queue and now theres no blindpick
Huh, made me realize that "akshually" ADCs shouldn't have Bursty Abilities. 🤔
another champ with 1 taunt, joke, laugh and probably the most basic dance they've ever made. Yikes
My crockpot theory is that they let Jhin stay there because they low key wanted him to kill Hwei. But then Jhin was interested in Hwei’s chaotic energy and decided he liked him.
So he did the whole thing where he challenged Hwei to show him his true passion or whatever, and then killed the rest of the masters and burnt the temple in a way that Hwei would think he did it.
if anything, i'm fairly sure his dull and uninteresting attire is wholly intentional. hwei himself is an incredibly sad and repressed individual, but then has the power to unleash stunning beauty with what he's capable of creating. the best and strongest aspect of his design is contrast, and the designers delivered on multiple levels. not only are each of his abilities completely different palettes, but they are also far more vibrant than he is. his art is the main attraction, not himself
If I recall there are 2 reasons why they welcomed Jhin
His island was secluded, and it was Jhin's first major tragedy he committed
Good luck with Gwanda the Genshin character who is one years old but also 1000....
Man i get why you hate her...
People are still speculating that Hwei has a connection to demons, just because it wasn't explicitly revealed doesn't mean he doesn't have that connection
I forgot how much he dislikes Gwen. I think I'll skip next week. For my own sanity
Hwei? More like… Hwhat the frick
I like him in concept, but I can see that he may become another permanently weak champ in the future
the dullness of the outfit is to contrast how vivid his abilities are. you see this demonstrated in his colour story, where he's surrounded in colour, yet still bleak.
I know he's weak but I wish his passive applied the mark for 3 seconds instead of 4
For the lore
0:20 literally me in draft, im bronze 4 but i have to play against diamonds and emeralds a lot, it just blows my mind how riot thinks its fair
"kayn doesn't get any skins" doesn't kayn have 5 skins? I know that it's been 6 years since his release but still 5 isn't bad.
missed out on that big oppertunity of saying Huei instead of day, and calling him huaweii by name.
bro how baffled I was when Hwei came out and literal supports had more dmg and a bigger health pool.
I think he’s wearing jade color shirt because he’s chinese? I mean his design has a lot of chinese element on it, the brush as well, and his name is hwei its literally chinese
the title sums up his personality, gameplay, and average-ranked player.
12:01 the shock from not killing alistar killed him :(
