- Best Picture 1989 Oscar winner. A young Tom Cruise, and Dustin Hoffman give signature performances in this hugely enjoyable classic.
Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) introduces his autistic brother Raymond (Hoffman or Rain Man of the title) to Blackjack...
Raymond has a penchant for counting cards and the couple quickly win $86,000 in one sitting. Watching over them, the Casino Surveillance team can't quite work out how they did it - commenting at one point that it was impossible to count a 6 deck shoe - go figure!!
Either way, the film cleaned up at the Oscars - including best screenplay.
Casino staff: No one can count into a six-deck shoe.
Raymond: Hold my orange soda.
Yes they can... if you practice you can. Your memory can do a lot more than you think it can.

@@jimferrill1790 he did but he very much played himself, Hoffman was Rainman for that movie, nothing about himself was in that character. True acting

"You're doing well. I'm happy for you." Yeah, he's obviously thrilled for them.
The dealer has no reason not to be happy for him lol. It’s the casinos money why would he care. In fact he would probably get a huge tip in the end.
-same dealer as the film 'Casino'. He was not happy with Joe Pesci...
The dealer's comment is well placed and depicts experience as a real dealer. Good dealers are very careful about their words, as gamblers tend to sustain losses and can become emotional and superstitious very quickly.

The moment where Raymond begins feeling overwhelmed by the crowd is heartbreaking
It shows how autistic people cannot handle excessive stimuli. I often think i am slightly autistic because in crowds i feel i am going crazy.

Rewatched it a few days ago, A very touchwarming masterpiece of film, based on the true story of Kim Peek, the actual Rain Man. An excellent Cast with Hoffman nailing the role despite the difficulty being expected, Hoffman's influence and his depiction were perfectly done, and deservingly of it awards, I don't think anyone else could be cast other than him, with Tom Cruise, and Golino, just as great to the performance, an excellent soundtrack, storyline, dialog and effects. Overall the film was perfection in capturing our hearts, and respect for the Rain Man. Obviously, a bit pushed the story is in comparison to the true story, but that's Hollywood. Not a single dull moment, whether be the Poker Scene to the simple scenes of them at home, Covering comedy, action, hearts, anger, sadness and just loads of emotions, by the end of it, your left with so much sympathy, admiration and respect. A film that does not deserve to be spoiled, but a must-watch. 1.16.23
Fun fact the first dealer, is the same dealer in the movie Casino, where Joe Pesci keeps saying hit me again
i wonder if he is actually a black jack dealer
@@gratler he was. He worked at Caesars on the 70s and 80s until he had a heart attack in '99
I hope he paid as fast as he collected
THey should have used him in The Hangover too!
Brandon Michaels I swear I saw him dealing there before I saw this movie.
It’s an amazing performance because he does everything with his facial expressions and it’s totally believable
I worked in a very small, (2 bed), respite unit for kids with all types of complex needs and most were non-verbal autistic. I agree - his mannerisms and facial expressions and the way he flinches away from contact is just like the poor wee kids we had at the unit. They’d come for a weekend at a time to give their parents a break and to take the kids to places they wouldn’t otherwise get….horse riding, hill walking etc.
“He knows there’s no one in the world who can count a six deck shoe” lol
Kim Peek the real rain man managed the payrolls of 160 people, he was able to complete this task in just hours without a calculator, then the company decided to fire and replace him with a computer. it took two full time accountants plus the computer just to replace him.
I think they just divided the counted numbers by the amount of decks remaining
Cause he's dead now
Stu Ungar was one of a kind and was able to count cards with 6 decks cards and this was not a movie!
When he said "you make me sad Ray" after winning him £85,000 was unforgivable. I would have just said don't worry about it bro you've helped me out big time already and put my arms around him. 😢
Real talk. So ungrateful. He got him a nice bed near the window though tbh in that hotel room lol
They're still in the middle of character development and interaction before Charlie has his turn of heart.
He apologized, He is Learning what is to care about Ray and it’s messy. That’s what the entire movie is about
Thesouluk; You do realise this is a movie don't you?🙄 Jeez man, crying - Really!
The Wheel of Fortune part was a necessary plot element, though. At the later hearing with the lawyer and the psychiatrist, Ray forgets everything about the winning at the blackjack table and only recalls losing at Wheel of Fortune.
The " six deck shoe" comment is absolutely immense. Then they cross to Raymond' full of concentration. Awesome movie. Well deserved of the awards and the accolades. Just a classic.

The hilarious part is that this isn’t technically cheating. Blackjack is literally a game of chance and math.
What I understand is that it isn’t illegal but the casinos have the right to ask you to leave and give up any won chips if they can prove it of course 😜
Monkey spoon some places give you the option of cashing out right then and there OR you have to stay in for the whole shoe
It’s mostly luck.
They can only ask you to leave. Generally if you are suspected of counting cards one of these things will happen.
A)They will legally tell you you are no longer welcome there, pay you out, and ban you from the casino (or possibly just the blackjack table)
B)they will impose restrictions on how you play and bet, so you have to stick with a betting style for the whole "shoe"
It's not illegal, and the mobs don't run the casinos anymore corporations do. Worst case you are banned from a casino.
@@monkeyspoon8255 they can not make you give up your winnings, they still have to pay you. Card counting isn't illegal
I swear all I’m writing is true. When I first watched this movie, I was ten years old and got fascinated by Raymond’s talent, always wishing to meet a guy like him. Fast forward 30 years and I had a daughter with a very similar visual talent. The dealers name really is Nick. He was a senior blackjack dealer at Caesars Palace. Always like to work graveyard so he could golf right after work with some of his pals-who were also dealers at Caesars. Back in the 90s, I would always play at his table on 3rd shift{only time i would play). I remember one time I walked up to his table and he told me to leave cause he was so hot! So i watched a few hands and HE WAS on fire Really nice guy to do that-even said it in front of pit boss. Told me alot of stories about dealing at Caesars. Most outrageous was when Bob Denver took over his table and started dealing and he payed everyone at the table even if they busted!
Well there's no such thing as being hot. It's up to you where you start counting wins and ignoring losses.
This is a cool fact. When I saw Casino I recognized this guy right away and just assumed he was an actual dealer since I'd never seen him in other films. Very cool to have it confirmed...

One of the best scenes ever
The road trip from Cincinnati to Los Angeles is the beating heart of "Rain Man". In the confined space of a car, Charlie and Raymond, two seemingly irreconcilable worlds, are forced to confront each other. Through the difficulties and discoveries of the journey, Charlie begins to understand the complexity of Raymond's world and develop a genuine brotherly bond. This journey is not just geographical, but above all internal, marking a profound evolution in Charlie's character.

@@PunkSlapper123 people still do it.
To count 6 or 8 deck shoe jist divide the running count by the number of cards left and you get your true count, veru easy to do
@@juanmagan7900 people dont realise how simple card counting is, for those that don't know:
you can count any size shoe. All you are doing is adding or subtracting 1 (or doing nothing) from your current total, every time you see a card.
All you need to know is that there are 20 high cards, 20 low cards and 12 middle cards in a deck, and how many decks are in the shoe. When you see a 2-6 you minus 1, when you see a 7-9 you do nothing, when you see a Jack-Ace you plus 1. Depending on the shoe, if your total is 0-15 you are slightly unfavoured, 15+ heavily unfavoured, if your total is negative 15 or more, you are favoured. That's it. That's card counting.
I like how it 3 minutes and 15 seconds surveillance says there's nobody in the world that can count of six-deck shoe that is true ever since the college students were doing their thing casinos Shuffle the deck almost halfway through a six-deck shoe

Guys in a suit look so sharp
I think the numbers were rigged at the end.. he knew it was 20 but when it didn't hit 20 he was shocked.. like it didn't make sense..
It might be that he was just tired.
It's very easy to get overstimulated in a casino if you're autistic - his fatigue is showing. It might be easy for normal people to stay in there, but for somebody autistic it's hell. That much noise, that many people, it's a testament to their relationship that he didn't FREAK OUT right there.
He also probably found the rhythm of the machine more soothing, which is why he walked away.
The wheel is easily rigged with a brake- I think the implication is that the wheel guy messed with the spin
Sheldon Cooper yes of course, probably most fifth graders are aware of that. And yet, in this scene, the implication is that the wheel guy messed with the spin.
The wheel is not rigged.
He is Autistic... Not all seeing all mighty God.
He can count cards but he can't walk on water or predict fast spinning wheels.
It made perfect sense. He could beat blackjack because he counted cards and adjusted his play and bet accordingly. The current hand is DEPENDENT on the cards remaining in the shoe. The roulette wheel is random - no math involved to use to the player’s advantage. Each spin is INDEPENDENT and unrelated to the previous results. That’s why he could win at BJ but not strict “games of chance”.
I had a roommate in college that wasn’t an autistic savant but was incredible at the table. Casinos tried to keep him out. In the 70s they got away with it. Not sure they could today
All it takes is for a person to win a large sum of money, and win another large sum of money, and the casino wants him out, and wants him out every day for the rest of his life. Go to a casino and lose, and they let you stay.
Very entertaining and fun to watch. Thanks for posting this.

The guy in the dark suit at the blackjack table (Mr. Kelso) was played by Ray Baker. He played the boss at Rekall in the movie "Total Recall."
A friend of mine was a consultant for the card scenes in this movie. He teaches casinos how to watch for and catch cheats. He travels around the world doing it. He can count cards. Up to 4 decks, I believe he said. He catches cheaters coming in, but also employees who are assisting others. He's a consultant for magicians you have heard of too. He is able to show the magicians how to handle cards like a regular card dealer, so everything looks legit. Another thing: he asked me what my birthdate was. Within about 5 seconds, he told me what day of the week it was. He was right! He's the nicest man too. But wow, the skill was so impressive.

Counting more decks in a shoe is not fundamentally different than counting a single deck.
You just divide your running count by the number of decks remaining in the shoe. That tells you the true count at any point in time. If you've got a 6-deck shoe and half the cards have been dealt from it, you divide your running count by 3 and that gives you the true count.
More decks doesn't make the count any harder from a technical perspective, it just means you have to remember it for longer because it takes longer to play a full shoe and the count itself will change more slowly because each individual count has less effect on the final true count. The betting strategy and basic counting remains the same either way.
I don't see why adding decks fundamentally changes everything - you are keep a running score, not memorising every card that passes. Continuous shuffle machines are the remedy to card counting.

Wrong, it’s opposite actually. Casinos want u to believe u can do it. They make way more off card counting attempts than actual counting losses
"You make me sad, Ray." Hilarious.
They are lucky that there was no shuffle machine. After 70-75% of all cards that were delt the dealer shuffles the 6 decks of cards again. So it can never come down to the last cards as it obviously does in this movie.
As soon as he left that seat, people would be fighting each other to sit there.
