Such an uplifting song, I still have the cd ep with the picture of Terry as a little boy. Sad loss of a great Coventry artist. The flying birds footage fits really well.

The quintessential pop song. I remember being in love with this beeeautiful girl, way out of my league when it comes to looks, and this song just kicked me to high heaven.
I am a lucky man. Why? Because I first heard Terry Hall in 1979. Back then, my friend and I played shooter/keeper football - between street signs at the mouth of a cul-de-sac in a market town in the south of England. The guy who lived directly behind our 'goal' played Gangsters almost incessantly after its release. As soon as I heard it I knew my life had changed forever...in a good way. This song is just as powerful as Terry's earlier offerings.
I love this version as well as the Hall/Lightning Seeds cooperation version in equal amounts. The Crane and Geese inflight footage is just as awe-inspiring as the song, and the two work together in perfect harmony!

You are mistaken, it is not Terry's song he co-wrote it with Ian Broudie. The lightning seeds version came first in 92 with Terry providing backing vocals. This version came out in 94.
Real's spot on there... and I have to say this version will always be my fave. It may be shallow ,but in the centre break, for me, the deeply produced version wins over the harmonica 'LS' version every time. Sorry Ian! but if it's any consolation nothing else you have ever written / produced can be topped imho.
