Even though MANY feel the Date Just does not need to be larger than 36mm. It’s already bling, and very noticeable. If Tony Soprano or famous large men thought history wore 36mm Date Just or Day Dates. 36mm is ok. However the 36mm has its limits. On big wrists big guys 7 & 1/2 plus wrists a 36mm will look small. The 41mm will look more balanced on larger men. If you’re small twisted a 41mm will make you look like you are trying too hard. It pops and sometimes it’s not a good thing. A classic rule of thumb (subjective) gold, two tone, jubilee bracelet Rolex it’s ok at 36mm. Let the design and material do its job. It will pop on wrist without trying. Oyster steel bracelet Date Just? 41mm or 36mm. Small wrist 36mm, larger wrist 41mm it won’t stand out.

Those men wore 36mm, because they had no other choice!
36mm is now relegated to status of unisex. Even women are wearing 40mm and 41mm Rolex models. You'll have better luck finding 36mm, because they just are not in as much demand as the 41mm.
The Grey market bears this out. The 36mm is just not as popular, and has less value retention as 40mm and 41mm rolex models.

“Larger men” you mean men that are fat. If you’re shredded it’s hard to go above 7 1/2 inch, there are exceptions of course. But average wrist size is 6,5-7,2 inch above that most people are just mostly fat or just very tall and wide. I live in the Netherlands, everyone is pretty tall here, but not wide at all

I'm having a Datejust 41 and find it too big even with my 19.3cm wrist. Main problem is the lug to lug size of 47.3mm which creates a gap at both sides and a huge gap at one side when it slides down your wrist making it quite uncomfortable. I have a 39 Seiko with 38mm bezel which sits perfectly on my wrist as it has only 44.3mm lug to lug size.

    • @hand.wound.horology

This is a perfect example that lug to lug is just as important as case size for wearability.

As a person who torn between 36mm and 40mm, i have concluded that it depends on what kinda brand and design language they approach. Rolex's design language has always been about sportiness and ruggedness that go along with elegance. So i think the datejust 41 make more sense. To put it in perspective, you can't expect a Seiko turtle to wear small and elegance on your wrist when it's make for ruggedness.

I fully agree. I was set on the 41 because a) all my other watches are 42 and b) it’s actually 39,x so closer to 40. But something just felt off. And first I thought it was the lug to lug as the lugs are actually quite long, but on closer inspection it’s the proportions, mainly the bezel. 41 just feels like a different watch. If you like that more and can wear it: great. Personally I’ll go with the classic 36.

What I take exception to are the people that post, if you wear anything larger than a 36mm whatever, your being flashy and flexing.
I have been weight training for years and a 36mm watch looks dainty on my wrist. The truth of the matter is it's not the 80s and 40mm and larger are the standard for mens watches. If someone enjoys wearing a unisex size, that their choice. Just like it's my choice to wear the more masculine size.
If that triggers someone, then that would be a them problem.

Most people that know nothing about watches will go for the 41mm. And most watch enthousiasts will choose the 36mm. Look at the average sales associate in a Rolex boutique, if they wear a Datejust it’s 9/10 a 36mm with jubilee and fluted bezel and not a 41mm. 36 mm is class with a suit, looks infinitely better than a 41mm. 41 looks like a watch from a shopping mall, the dial is way too big

I completely agree. The dj36 proportions are spot on.
The dj41 was introduced to cater to the "big watch" trend a few years back. The upsize in case diameter makes the watch lose its original charm.
      It's a completely different watch

Clickbait or simply the stupidest Rolex video in a loooong time?
It has nothing to do with 'types of person' but simply your wrist size. Yours is kinda girlie, so the 41mm looks ridicilous on you, whatever 'type of person' you are.

If you have a ‘big wrist’, it’s usually an indication that you’re overweight and you have too much body fat, which is not masculine at all. It’s quite weird that you feel the need to talk about someone’s wrist in such derogatory terms.

@@hand.wound.horology great video btw. I agree with all your talking points. I feel you could get away with either watch, and it simply comes down to your preference.

      @mema4922 thank you. I agree, but I prefer the 36mm cause I'm a purist.
Original commenter seems to think wrist size purely determines which watch is best for you. Whatever happened to personal preference?
Small people should drive small cars and live in small houses cause they are small? 🤣🤷‍♂️
