  • UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty testified before the House Finance Committee Wednesday about February's cyberattack that shut down hospital and pharmacy operations for more than a week. UnitedHealth said a Russian ransomware gang stole data from Change Healthcare, the system used to process health insurance claims. The company ultimately paid a ransom.

As a provider, I can say this is the worst insurance company of them all. They have had multiple lawsuits against them in the past and continue to be negligent and care only about profit while treating providers terribly. I refuse to accept this insurance. What is unfortunate that some providers don't have the luxury to not accept them, because they control so much of the market and continue to get bigger and bigger, buying other plans.

Our office was affected by this. United Health Group owns the clearinghouse called Change Healthcare. The clearinghouse works behind the scenes of our behavioral heath office software processing & paying claims. I can’t describe the chaos this caused. We have 17 providers not to mention residents/interns generating 80-100 claims a day. This went in for months & when they did start getting offices back online, mental health offices weren’t a priority. We then found out they’re being extorted for more money. We’re still seeing the affects of this because military insurance, Humana Military, still hasn’t switched clearinghouses so there’s no end in sight to when we’ll get paid for those claims since we have to provide continuity of care for our patients. It’s a gigantic mess. We were all lied to. This wasn’t just an ATT hack but much more.

I worked for years as data manager/programmer for a national health care provider organization. This was in Mid-2000s. At that time I refused to connect the data servers to the internet. I knew what was inevitable and I personally did not want to end up on the National news.
My contract was not extended. And sure enough, only a few years later - after they found someone else to agree to connect the data servers to the internet - you guessed it. The data was stolen by hackers. I won't say the name of the health care organization, and actually it doesn't matter so much. Those provider and payer organizations that have not yet been hacked eventually will be. Because they all make so much more money putting your medical data on the internet, they will never stop.
And the people making the decisions to do this are rich enough that they can pay for extra security for themselves, and they don't give a rat's a$$ about your data...

Good luck getting the loan from Optum we were only offered $1,180 that did not cover one paycheck for a staff member let alone any bills. UHC is still sitting on ALL my claims from February 2024 and for one of their affiliate’s claims have been sitting from April 2023. UHC is paying the slowest in this crisis and has no handle on their true picture of their business and/or business practices of their affiliates such as Optum. FYI We were 100% affected by Change Healthcare and are still only 60% back up and running as of today two months after the attack.

And if you are retired Medicare Advantage plans are worthless. They don't cover anything and they drop providers without giving you any warning. Its only adequate if you are extremely healthy and never run into a health problem the rest of your life. Once you make the mistake of signing up for one of these plans your life is now held hostage. You cant get the care you need and You aren't allowed to get out and get a good coverage with original Medicare along with a medigap plan .

Madams and sirs of the committee. Respectfully, this issue is systemic and responsibility falls on not only the businesses but also the regulators. I have faithfully watched three years of hearings that do not achieve the results the committee expects. I do believe that ultimately, there is no privacy on networks. Doors imply privacy; keyboards do not imply privacy. This is a far larger issue to which we all should pay close attention to; has a moratorium been suggested to hear from the citizens that are affected via their votes? I understand this is a sensitive issue and appreciate all of your service and discourse.
