I ran the window treatment department of a design center for 32 years. One thing your fans should know : if you're getting an outside mount on a shade, you should have the width 3" wider on each side (6" total) than the window opening for privacy and light control reasons. The gap between the fabric of the shade and the window allows people to see into your home and lets light in as well. Love your videos! Nora

I hadn't thought twice about vertical blinds since the 80s, then my son and daughter each bought houses in the past year with, you guessed it!, vertical blinds! I'm recommending this video to each of them.

The examples you show are beautiful, but can you include some “average” homes? It can be hard to translate an example with 20 foot ceilings into a suburban split level.

Everyone we know thinks we’re nuts for swapping out our plantation shutters for top down - bottom up shades. Removing the shutters has opened up our smaller spaces, eliminated all of the constant dusting, and we have more light and more specific privacy 😍✨🙌🏼

Lisa - thank you, thank you, thank you 🥰. I've been pondering what best to do with my kitchen window, it's not really overlooked but I often see people walking through the garden, past my window taking a short cut to the road!!! (I'm in a ground floor flat so the garden isn't just mine). The shade that goes up from the bottom and down from the top looks perfect, light coming in the top and privacy. Who knew these even existed??? You're my hero, again 😂😂

Great video as always! When we were starting out Lowe's had just introduced "cut while you wait" honeycomb Levolors that you DIY install. We needed budget friendly, neutral and insulated, and those things lasted years. They were also sturdier than old school white vinyl roller shades that would occasionally spring up in the middle of the night and scare the kids to pieces!

In contemporary shades, one way to avoid having to do a valance, and also to avoid collisions with casement window hardware, is to do a reverse roll with an inside mounting. It looks a lot sleeker because you can't see the roll itself at the top and it leaves enough space between the shade and the window, so you don't touch any of the hardware.

Hi Lisa, Another great video. Thanks for them all. I used Silhouette blinds in our old house, and adored the way they look, but they are very difficult to clean, even by professionals. I never had any success with trying to stick the vacuum wand between the vertical layers to suck up the dust and dirt that accumulated on the horizontal slats. One new style of roller blind you didn’t mention was the “zebra blind”, which I have had custom made for all my windows, save my living, dining, family and reception (ie, formal) rooms. I’m hoping this style of blind doesn’t attract, or at least ‘embrace’, the dust, dirt and bugs between them like my Silhouettes did. They are fresh and completely current, light-diffusing, yet provide privacy, and can be constructed as black-out blinds or combined with an integral roller blind. They give a consistency from outside the house, which I think is important. I have had them made to fit inside the window frames, and intend to combine them with drapes, valances and swags in my various rooms - or leave them plain in the smaller bathroom windows, since they have self-headers. My idea is that they will maintain our privacy while letting in lots of sunlight AND provide what is effectively a blank palatte, and, at the same time, texture, for whatever other window treatments I care to add. We shall see! Thanks again or sharing your expertise with us, and in such a delightful way. You are marvellous!

Hi Lisa! I've always liked the clean white look of simple Japanese style blinds. Either made of rice paper or bamboo or ratan. I love traditional shutters too, I can't wait!

Couldn’t find comment section to tell you I’d like to see kitchen design. My kitchen is open to my living room with the dining table to the right of the kitchen. I live in a townhouse. I want it to tie in with this two areas without looking too kitcheny (if that’s a word).

There is also Springs window fashion(Bali or Graber) they have very nice shades patterns also Levolor as well which is now under Hunter Douglas because c’mon some people do not want to spend too much on window treatments. Graber is more expensive however the product and customer service is top notch…. Bali’s fabric is amazing also look into pleated shades it’s like a roller but pleated they come in 1 in and 2 in look great and do not cost as much as Roman and roller.

I’m in the UK and have Intu Blinds. They’re a great option for places where you don’t want holes or screws, like French windows or bi-folds.

I'd love a video on how to do built-in looking storage, primarily for crafts etc, I'd love to have hidden storage for my crafts without it looking like a craft room. I share the space with my home office.
OOH! And how about suggestions for floor coverings that can withstand being under an office chair, what type of area rugs are best? I bought a ruggable because it seemed like the low profile would be great and I didn't want to buy a plastic mat to put down, and for the most part it's working fine functionally, but the color is fading so fast in the high traffic areas and right under the chair. This will be fine for the time we'll be in the apartment, but I'd love some suggestions for what types of area rugs work best under rolling chairs. I did replace the chair wheels with the rubberized inline style wheel sets, they're amazing. Very quiet and smooth rolling.

Someday I want to get shades that are top-down. That way I can get privacy from the street, but still get light in. Window coverings are so expensive, all my Victorian windows are super-tall, standard sizes are several feet too short.

I love the simplicity of the solar roller shades. A have them in most my apartment- mostly contemporary. Perfect -so my kitties won’t destroy them

DIY problem solver: If you have a room that doesn't anywhere lend itself to hanging artwork (and you know you need some), bring it to your shade. Here's how: Buy yourself your basic Levlor shade cut to your window size. When you get it home, gently tear the plastic shade from the tube on which it is glued, making sure not to tear the tube that you will need to complete the project. Use the shade as a drop cloth on which to finish the project. Get yourself some Super Glue (not other brands that may ruin your project.) Buy your favorite canvas that you want to use to replace the shade you removed. I recommend a canvas of things you see in the sky, like a beautiful sunset, a blue sky with some popcorn clouds, or maybe some birds or some upper tree limbs (whatever goes with the theme and colors of the room where you will hang the finished shade.) Remove the canvas from the wood frame on which it came. A staple remover or knife probably works best, depending on how the canvas is adhered to the wood frame. Cut the removed canvas to the width of your custom cut shade barrel, making sure that you use that part of the canvas that is the best part for going with your room decor. Glue the cutout canvas to the shade barrel, and hang it as you would any other shade (with the proper mounting brackets), and wahlah! Your previously art sparse room now has art when you pull down your window shade!
